we are social creatures so yes not being able to socialise without sacrificing some other essential for a week or two is certainly being poor in my mind

You don't need to spend money to socialise. Not having a pint/glass of wine in your hand does not mean you cannot be social.

So, given your answer, and given that there are alternatives to a roast dinner, why is not having a roast dinner a sign of poverty?

    I refer to my original post - some people have no idea about life;

Wrong... some people have just made sensible adult decisions and worked hard all their lives.

You can't expect the same lifestyle when you're unemployed as someone who has to work 5 or maybe even 7 days a week.

I know someone whose sister got a brand new house in Drogheda, right beside her parents, €1200 to buy white goods to furnish it.
It's high spec, wood burning stove, solar panel water heating on the roof.

Do you know how much that grates on people who are out working every day, paying a mortgage and being financially punished for other peoples mistakes ?

No, you can't expect much sympathy from people after your basic needs are met and you're not in any immediate danger at all.

I don't have the prices but cheap cuts such as

    Stewing beef
    offal
    Kidney
    liver
    Dark chicken meat

Pretty much everything bar light chicken meat and sirloin/fillet cuts.

    +1.

I get ox's tail from the butcher. Slow cooked it is amazing. I also always buy chicken legs from the supermarket, whole legs in noodle soup- yummy and soo cheap !!!!

can you give us your examples of the cheap meats from the butcher that you are referring to, and the prices of that cheap meat from the butcher?

Brisket, shoulder and stewing beef, as well as minced meat, hearts, liver, oxtails are all cheap.

Chicken legs, thighs as well as the hearts and livers are cheap and nicer than the breast, in my opinion. In my local butcher I can get 5 legs for about 2 quid. I can also get hearts and livers for next to nothing but then I live in a old, traditional less well off area where people still eat what was considered poor food because that was what they were reared on. 2 kg of mince costs roughly around €7 and that is a lot of meat.

I have visions of subsidised visits to the pub courtesy of the Department of Social and Family Affairs/health board! :p

Yea that would be pretty ridiculous alright. But a portion of ones social welfare should be spent on some excursion. It doesn't have to be expensive and it doesn't have to involved drink, but if somebody chooses to go for a pint as their excursion, then it should be ok, once all other necessities are looked after.
    pmcmahon wrote: »
Anybody who has a "necessity" for a night out clearly has a problem.

That's the problem exactly, the stigma attached to going out. It's a very narrow minded statement to be honest. A night out is very much a necessity. It doesn't mean you have to go and get wasted, it doesn't even mean you have to drink, but it is a lot cheaper than providing care/medicine for people suffering with mental health.

We are talking about a night out which in Ireland mostly pub based. I don't drink much - hence my rock shandy comment. But to socialise I go to pubs. I also cook but that's work for someone ( in my house me) and not a relaxing night for the chef.

I can afford to go out as I could when I was a student and on the dole. People who can't are , by the definition of relative poverty, poor.

Poverty is relative, when energy prices can equal more than 20% of an income, the basics become less affordable. A family might be able to afford the privilege of having a car and may need less time "socialising" as a couple but then the kids needs are greater and often more costly. A single person not being able to afford a night out or a warm winter coat on 20k is doing something wrong.

I work part time, my partner works full time for €9.50 an hour. We have 4 kids and can't afford to eat out or go out to socialize in the pub more than once or twice a year.

I couldn't afford a winter coat this year, nor can I afford to get my hair cut at the hairdressers. As a busty lady, I can't afford a new bra (Penneys don't do bigger sizes!), so have to buy second hand off ebay.

However, I do a good shop every week so we eat well. We pay our bills every month (most of the time!), manage to run a car and have the internet.

I wouldn't say we're living in poverty, but we are definitely existing on a shoestring. Luxuries are out - we certainly can't afford holidays, for instance.

Sometimes I feel pretty depressed over it, but I suppose we could be worse off. When the youngest is a bit older, I'll be able to work full time and my partner is looking for a better job at the moment, so hopefully things will get better in the future. :)

I would suggest you go into your butcher and get the prices of these items above. When you do, you will realise that they are not "cheap". Next time, when you quote about cheap cuts of meat, make sure you know the actual prices.

My local butcher does a kilo of mince, 5 pork chops, 5 chicken fillets, and a couple of steaks of my choice for 20 quid. I'm sure it's not the butcher in the country doing similar.

With no effort on my part and huge portions, this lasts 4-5 weeks for me. With more reasonable portions I'd estimate this meat would last for 3 weeks for a family of four.

If you hand that over you are a dope. I got a pint of cola in Roddy Bolans for 3 euro when I was at the match last weekend.

    Sorted :)

Great. But what's that gotta do with going out or not?

This isn't a dole thread. People on the dole can go out. It's a thread on the working poor.

Had to book an early-morning flight to Abu Dhabi for my holidays in June, as the evening flights with Etihad were slightly over my budget. Disgusting what is happening to this country.

To be honest I have little patience for people who refuse to engage in persuasive and eloquent debate. I explained my position 3 times and was accused of waffle. What is it they say - "never argue with an idiot, he'll bring you down to his level and beat you with experience"

The cheap cuts of meat is not related to the thread title. Presumably the people who can't go out cook cheaply at home.

A butcher in finglas does the same,i tend to pop in before heading home once a week. The majority of the time he throws in a few sausages and rashers too.Anyone who say's there's no value to be found in a butchers is living in a bubble.
