Used to save a grand per month before I had a kid. Now it's zero per month.

I save just enough to cover all my bills every month. A long time since I saved for myself unfortunately

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 619 ✭✭✭Pilotdude5

Used to save about €1200 a month back in 08 and 09. All since gone on AVGAS and flight tests.

Now I cant remember the last time my account was over €100:(

Last summer I put away €10 every day. I needed to dig into it sometimes but by September I had €500 saved.

€200 a month? Is that all?

I'll probably be shot for saying this but im saving a €100 a week on the dole.

Im hoping to get away in a few months as I cant get work here. And I cant imagine being in the same situation this time next year.
Ok its easier living at home. But I still pay my way. Buy my own food, shopping in aldi, that can be between €30-€40 a week. I save €20 every week and put it towards the bills as they come in. Im lucky there's no mortgage. I dont think my mother minds as she would struggle with the bills on her own.

Why did I give away so much info away?

Fair play to you, not easy to save that much but living at home is a bonus now is the time to save while you can.

I'd never save if I was "saving for a rainy day" in Ireland :pac:

Not much - about €300 a month living away from home.

Very little, being in a long distance relationship and the rent on a 1 bed Dublin 8 apartment eats into my wages.

So if you had to pay rent, you'd be (at best) saving nothing?

Used to be able to save a couple of grand a month about 5 years ago. No kids or mortgage now but would struggle to put away 500 now.

Yep, I just dont feel right or comfortable with myself etc if I dont have even a small amount of savings put away.
Only starting saving this year after ages of saying it and trying to , twas one of my major resolutions and im wanting to keep it! Havent got that much so far, but at least ive got something, thats the point :)

I know some friends/aquaintances of mine who are my age or a little younger and have to pay back loans taken out of little things aka not a house, so I could be a lot worse imho!

Yeah but he is not paying rent - instead he is setting a good chunk of his dole money aside with the intension of getting out there and getting a job and doing something about not getting work here in Ireland and not spending the rest of life on the dole moaning about.... "how little jobs there is" or "how they hate the recession"

fair play to you this guy. It's good to see some people actually putting us tax payers money to good use!

Yeah I have a direct debit savings account. I also was on emergency tax for awhile and when I claimed it back I put it all in a savings account. For three months in a part time job I got 950 back :)

No problem with saving on the dole, good for (I assume) her. If only they hadn't started their post with "€200 a month? Is that all?"

Not sure if HardLuckWoman's post was serious or not but I'll bite...If someone is managing to save that much money on the dole then they're getting far too much and this is why means testing is necessary. The dole should cover your basic living costs while you look for work and nothing else.

People on the dole do get far to much money.
I have freinds/family that are on it and have a better social life , better clothes etc then I do - and I am in full time employment.

He/her is covering their basic living costs €30-€40 a week on food, and €20 towards bills, and are fortunate enough to be living at home.
Rather then piss the remainder of their money up against the wall or spend it on unnecessary items they are putting it to good use and plan to do something about not been able to get work here in Ireland.

I'd rather you OP than some of the people I know. Living at home with their folks, not paying towards rent or bills. 200 a week is purely for fags, booze and entertainment.

    Wish I had that :(

That's why it should be means tested. HLW is living at home, she shouldn't get as much as people who have to pay rent or who have more outgoings. If people are able to save money from their dole to go to Australia or something then it is being completely counter-productive...Irish tax payer's money that is going to be spent in another country.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,272 ✭✭✭Henlars67

30 years of age and never saved money in my life.

I've had jobs where I was on almost €700 a week and I spent it all , down to minimum wage where I spent all and a while on the dole where I spent all.

The difference was on €700 a week I had a great time spending it all but on the dole I was spending it all just on bills, rent and food.

I have no intention of ever saving either.

A friend of mine died tragically a few months ago, he left no value on money either and couldn't get rid of it quickly enough when he had it, and he was right.

It wouldn't be much good to him now.

HLW is just looking for a reaction. I am workin full time, living at home ( cant afford rent) and try save 50 euro a week after givin parents something. My money always seems to go though on something :(

Quitting smoking on Saturday morning so that should save.......A FORTUNE!

I agree with you everyone should be means tested, but their not, and that's just how it is.
So for now she is entitled to and has the right to get as much as everyone else gets. Just like your average Joe in the same situation who will buy their food shop, pay an odd bill and spend the rest and smokes, booze and what ever else.
Therefor fair play to her for saving what she can and doing something constructive with it. And if she does leave and goes to another country it's one less person we are giving our tax money to.

We're eating into our savings just to keep our heads above water at the moment. So currently we're saving about -50 a week. :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,043 ✭✭✭MurdyWurdy

Yep, save a good bit per month at the moment. We're about to go down to one income though so that'll change soon.

Our new budget says we will be able to save about €700 a month when that happens but I think the realities of it will mean that'll come down to about €400/€500.

No, I'm saying that something could happen anyone at any time, if you weren't around anymore then saved money wouldn't be much use, would it?

In fact it would be quite a waste. Spend everything while you can and enjoy it.

    That's my motto

There is a man here in the States that I listen to on the radio and he was so good at explaining how to save I ordered his book. The book is The Total Money Makeover and his name is Dave Ramsey. I got the book pretty cheap at Amazon (yup, already started saving). I can't recommend that book enough. Can't say I've done that wonderful yet because of the pets getting sick and needing money for them then the truck broke (everything at once, isn't that how it always happens) but I see a good savings right around the corner.

    Great thread OP! :)

I was never any good at saving, I have some saving but its from getting good money presents from family etc for things like my graduation. I dont earn that much at the moment so I would rather spend what I get to have a better standard of living rather than trying to cut back on going out etc in order to save.

I would definitely intend on saving at least a bit when I'm earning more money though.

I moved country which ate into what I had. Now I am trying to clear debts and will start saving seriously when that's done. There's a balance between saving and living, which I haven't found yet.

How do you get the dole if you're living at home. Thought you had to live independently to get dole.
