About to start playing this finally. Anyone recommend a link to a good tips page to help get me started?

I hope you have a few weeks off.

Started this a couple of weeks ago. Found the card game rules very confusing and missed out on some earlier cards (The Baron)
Now all I play is Gwent

About to start playing this finally. Anyone recommend a link to a good tips page to help get me started?

    Tip 1:
    9WkNluj.jpg

Have you got both DLC's and how important is immersion to you?

I have recently finished the game and both DLC's and I disagree with the consensus that both DLC's should be completed _after_ the main game. The problem with this is that the world becomes empty after you complete it. The regular gang is no where to be found and this destroys immersion. Your heart will feel empty after such an epic campaign.

I therefore recommend that you get as close as possible to the end game (You will know when it's the final mission), then play and finish the Hearts of Stone DLC. After that complete the main campaign and then _immediately_ start the Blood and Wine campaign.

This route will spare you from the heartache of running around an empty world.

    Have fun!

I just have the base game. Was thinking of picking up the DLC but with the game being so famously massive I think maybe I should hold off, at least initially.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,216 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

You don't need the DLC yet, as one is mid game and the other is set after the main game. There's more than enough content to keep you going for 100 or so hours. As for tips, i'd recommend you don't read anything before hand. Just play the game, put some points into swords and try the magic, and just stick with what you like. There's no bad builds (well, there probably are), but you'll figure it out.

I'd absolutely love to be playing this for the first time again. It's an amazing game.

One thing I must be doing wrong is not using potions. I'm level 19 and have put one skill point into the green skills. My Toxicity is zero and never an issue.

You will be clamoring to buy it in about 100 gameplay hours time, trust me. :D

As was mentioned there are no bad builds, but I reckon the alchemy (green) ones are most fun personally and add the most extra hours etc to the game trying to develop more potions and decoctions. Though I would say to upgrade the 'yrden' one to the second level if you're playing on Death March or some of the wraith characters I found could be infuriatingly impossible before doing so. Your call whatever way you want to build, but there is a thing you can buy around mid game onwards called 'potion of clearance' or something like that, that allows you to reset all your leveling up points and move them to something else between red/green/blue. You can buy this multiple times also so it's not just a one-off.

Taking the plunge in the PSN sale for the 25e GOTY Edition.

Big falout fan, enjoyed skyrim - hoping its not overly medieval for me.

I had not played much of any games for years until about 18 months ago when my room mate got Fallout 4 on the PS4, I loved it and got hooked. About 6-7 months ago I built myself a gaming PC and Witcher 3 GOTY was the first title I bought. I seriously regret it because nothing else looks like will even come close for a good, long while.

I really, really like Fallout 4 even though I know some didn't, but there is no comparison between it and The Witcher. It is very medieval but trust me, you won't care. Might bother you for the first tiny bit, but once you get to Velen (after the small intro town early on) you won't care one f***ing bit. :D

You don't really need to level that tree at all, you can craft the potions regardless. I never had an issue with toxicity even on death march.

Ah man, get both the DLC's :) They are worth it. The HoS DLC has my favourite antagonist in the series.

Getting and enabling the DLC's wont affect your main campaign at all. You lose nothing by having it loaded.

Tip 2. You will be wasting your time if you explore all the sea bound ? points in Skellige.

Tip 3. Don't load the main menu theme as your ringtone, you'll be tempted to not answer any phone calls :p

The stats / build part of it is not complicated at all compared to other games, neither is gear. I completed the game without crafting a single piece of armour or weapons aside from the ones that you get as rewards for certain quests.

I didn't put a single ability point into the green section either.

Gotta make the school gear!!! I liked in B&W when you have display stands :D

Having already completed this game twice including the DLC on the second run through, im finding im having to stop myself from going for a third go at it.....for another few months at least anyway.

Is it true that the saves from the normal W3 aren't compatible with the GOTY edition?. Thinking about picking up the GOTY but I had W3 before but traded it in about half way through the game so don't really fancy playing through it all again.

Started playing this last week. I'm still only level 5 but ran into a quest that was level 26. It auto-saved as I stated the quest so every time i restarted i died within 2 seconds. Luckily my last manual save was only a couple of minutes beforehand

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,558 ✭✭✭✭dreamers75

Gear and stats only really matter if playing on highest difficulty from the start, if you are not it doesnt really make any difference.

The basic premise is: There is a monster, Learn about how you kill it. Bring that stuff.

It is not as boring as that last sentence :)

Yeah that's true unfortunately. It's treated as a separate game.

My previous save worked fine when I was upgraded to the GOTY edition so I don't think that's true.

Possibly not an issue on PC, definitely true on console though which I'm thinking they're on since they traded in the game originally.

I played it up until you go to
    Kaer Moran
towards the end. Moved onto something else. Had about 100hours played. Returned a few months after B&W and couldn't remember how to do anything. Restarted from scratch.
I regret nothing. [341 hours on record]

If you finished the game you could use a high level character for the DLCs I believe.

The Final Book in the series just came in the mail for me today. I have only read the books because the games have inspired me to. As much as i love Sapkowski's work i have no time for him because he seems like a foukin dooooooooope

I read the books after playing witcher 2 when I got it free with gold. Love them, surprisingly funny in parts, and it really lends further depth to stuff you come across when playing the games - particularly little nods in the various in-game books you find.

He just strikes me as a guy who is probably being taken somewhat out of context. Euro gamer had a great interview with him and he came across as a likeable curmudgeon, who is refreshingly honest about the money side of things.

    Poles/Ukrainians vs Russians ? Who'd have thunk it :D

Seriously though the metro books are great but the translations are Sh1t. Herself is fluent and assures me of this, grand if you don;t know better though so moot I guess.

Glukhovsky had a much bigger role in the writing of the last light game than Sapkowski had in any of the witcher stuff. To me Sapkowski licensed it and expected a cheque where as Glukhovsky wanted to have input.

EDIT: I say this and I'm half way through metro 2035 which really wouldn't be the book it is without the game Metro:Last Light

Just finished the main story, only took 135hrs, but I think I got a great ending, don't know how I managed it seeing as I
got Vesemir killed (not happy about that), but in the end Ciri survived, gave her a pretty sweet looking silver sword named swallow and she went on to be a Witcher

    Now to start the expansions!

Yeah, now that I think about it, it's a plot point designed to
make Ciri loose control and show her power

The important question is, Triss or Yen?

Which, having not played either of the other two games or knowing anything about the whole Witcher universe (genuinely wasn't sure if he was a male Witch, or a dude who hunted witches as of the start of the game :p ) is one of the most f***ing awesome moments of any game I have ever played. :D

I posted here a week and a half ago or so saying I was starting this so thought I would update.

    Well...

It's brilliant, love it. Have just arrived in Velen after about 7hrs of play (really wish I had more time to play). Did everything I could do in White Orchard, playing on Blood and Broken Bones difficulty.

I picked up the season pass earlier this week as it was on sale on the PS store for €12.99.

The only negative point I have is that the music, although good, is limited in variety and so can get a bit repetitive. Everything else is excellent.

Wow, the author seems bitter. I wouldn't have known a thing about his books or the universe he created only for the critical acclaim and popularity of CDPR's The Witcher 3.

He doesn't have to love the game, video games in general, or be full of praise for the adaptation, but he seems to be in some serious denial.

After finishing the game I was mad to start reading the books and explore more of the world, I still am, but I'm not sure if I'll be giving him my money to do it.

I heard on a podcast last week he sold the licence rights to CD Projekt Red for a relatively small sum a few years ago. I imagine that the money he likely lost in that deal may contribute to his opinion of them now. The books were apparently popular in Poland before the games.

it was not the first time he had sold the gaming rights to a developer but that version failed thankfully

I actually couldn't get into it too much until about the time I hit Velen, then got into it unlike any game I ever have - season pass is the best DLC purchase you'll have ever made, promise! :)

Hope it's not a spoiler but the music varies more as you open up the map further. I'd also advise you to try out Death March at this point, makes it even more engrossing again (but can be too tricky before Velen due to not being leveled up). Also seriously gets you to run like hell!! when you see that little red skull above someone!

CD gave him more money for no reason other than being nice.

He does come off as a bit of a dick, fairly sure more people have read those books because of the games.

the white orchard part is pretty dull tbh.

Velen is good but I found the general landscape depressing (it's supposed to be so I guess it's accurate), the later areas are IMO much better.
