I'm wondering what can some one use to clean burnt in powder and oil stains of a shotgun. I don't want to use anything rough that will leave scratches or marks and lead to more problems maybe. I'm wondering is there a spray or acetone of some sort out there to move them? Any info and hep welcome.

Off which surface? Breach, stock, barrel, etc?

Whatever advice you get please, please stay away from acetone or acetone based products. It will strip the bluing on your barrel in a second. Not worth taking a risk.

As for the burnt in powder. Depending on where it is you can use a thick oil, and a nylon bristle brush and slowly work away at it. You could use a KG product designed to get burnt powder out of barrel (such as KG1). If it's in an area that will never be seen then you ca go to town with a more abrasive pad, and harsher chemicals.

I have a double barrell and the stains are on the breach of the two barrels and around the face where the firing pins are in the gun and where the breach locks into each other as well if you know what i mean. its probably dried in carbon and oil and dirt from firing and i just want to remove it really.

I know what you are referring to.

I clean my gun religiously. Yet still i have these "stains" on the breach. They are a mix of fouling and marks of wear from the cartridges themselves. My 682 had them no matter how hard i scrubbed because of the amount of clay shooting i done with the gun.

When i got the fouling cleaned the "wear" marks would still be there. Remember that when the cartridge is fired the brass is pushing up against the face of the breach (where the firing pins extrude) and gradually create a wear pattern. Hence the mark is the same size as the cartridge brass.

It's the same on a bolt from a centrefire rifle.

Try rubbing the stains with some tin foil they might come out.

Ya i hear ya thats what i have but some are really balck stains and the gun is only 3 yrs old or that way. i always clean the gun after everyday out myself and i just see a few stains I'd like to clean off and know how to do it for future reference myself.

would that not mark or scratch the metal in the gun itself?

The black fouling is only burnt carbon. If it's built up it may take a little time, and elbow grease. I'd use a carbon remover, and a nylon brush with some time and patience.

Try prevent any cleaner going down the "gap" between the hole, and the firing pin. It may, over time, cause issues with the mechanism (clogging, etc.). Not a huge issue as i have taken the stock off and given the mechanism a cleaning before on my own gun. Nothing complex about it.
