As an MEP Brian Crowley gets two thirds of his medical expenses paid. If he has been in a private room in a hospital for the last three years, then he really needs that benefit. There is no way he will ever resign.

Ah, well in that case, Ming might well be the cheaper of the two after all. Making him better value, technically.

I'd question whether a patient really "needs" to have a private room in a hospital, but if Crowley has access to such benefits (which the majority of his electorate do not have access to) he will obviously keep taking advantage of them as long as he can.

He also gets 4500 PER MONTH to rent an office and guess who he rents it from? His brother!

Just joined in here as I felt I had to comment on this unusual situation.
At the Jack Lynch symposium in Cork the FF party leader was asked a number of times about the Crowley situation, he got irate at journalists who has asked him when was the last time he visited or spoke to Brian, he walked away red faced, he came back soon after and said that Brian is extremely unwell and is in a sterile environment in CUH. He is unlikely to be back any time soon.

We all wish Brian the best of luck.
That does not mean anything said previously regarding our elected representation is wrong though.

On a personal basis I wish him a speedy recovery. On a political basis he needs to resign his seat if he is incapable of fulfilling the duties. If the only reason he is holding onto the seat is so he can afford specialised medical treatment I sincerely doubt there is an ultra secret medical system available only to sitting MEPs. He is in the system now and if he lost his MEP status in the morning he will continue to be treated by the HSE like the rest of us would be.

And also there is nothing unusual about this situation. People become seriously ill all the time in the private sector and when it becomes apparent that they will not be able to return to work they are replaced, often under an early retirement scheme or such. The only thing that is unusual in this case is after 8 years of not being capable of doing the job Brian still has not been replaced.

The next elections to the european parliament are in May 2019. You can be sure that Brian will hang on until then. He may even decide to run at the next irish presidential election in 2018.

Kieran Harltey (the substitute) has been on the radio again talking about the lack of representation in Europe.
Maybe Micheál Martin is afraid to do anything considering how popular Brian is in Cork.

    http://www.irishexaminer.com/breakingnews/ireland/substitute-repeats-call-for-brian-crowley-to-step-down-as-mep-following-lengthy-illness-801239.html
Mr Hartley said he has written to Micheál Martin on three separate occasions and has been met with a wall of silence.

"I believe at such a crucial time that Brexit is happening, that right now the Irish people need representation and need people in the European Parliament representing their views the opinions, and having a say on what happens in what will probably be the most difficult time for Ireland, when our biggest trading partner is about to leave the European Union," he said.

People become seriously ill all the time in the public sector too, and they get six months full pay, then six months half pay and then they are retired off on retirment pay.

Crowley has got a lot more than that.

This is incorrect, Public Service workers get 3 months on full pay and 3 months on half pay and if they have to retire early on health grounds then their pension is reduced pro rata.

For the type of serious illness that Crowley has, they would get six months full and six months half.

Yes, sorry about that - I'd forgotten about the critical illness policy.

Who pays Kieran Hartley's wages and expenses ? Is it taken from Crowley's pay or is it us the taxpayer who has to pay it, on top of Crowley's. Surely as a non-attendee he cannot be claiming expense's, and if he works from his hospital bed then maybe the HSE should get his office allowance. As for him getting better from his illness, I really don't care, he lied at the last election to the people of Munster, so obviously he don't care about me.

I don't believe there would be any deductions from his salary to fund his replacement.
