Mid Life Crisis

    Have had enough:
After hours must surely be the place to post my mid life crisis:
I am 36, recently single after a long relationship, have a good career and have 100,000 euro in savings.

Recently I am questioning what’s its all about ? I recently read that when people are told they are dying one of their biggest regrets is been a slave to work.
So boardies what should I do with my mid life crisis. Keep working with a eye on my career, earning good money, look for a wife and family etc

    Or
Throw it all away, give up job, move somewhere and party until I have no cash left
Or indeed any other suggestions welcome.

First of don't do my father and try finding your purpose in life in things a majority of people would call cults. Don't do anything philosophy course or anything like that unless their university run. Even if they seem legit in reality they're very cult like.

Do you have a good balance between work and job? Do you have any hobbies? Like you 36 I would hardly call that mid life. Your still at a age when you'll find a wife no problems at all.

You can give me your 100k savings if that would cheer you up.

If I gave you my 100k then that would be a mid life crisis!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,204 ✭✭✭amacca

    Thats the crisis man

on the one hand you imagine you could live an amazing interesting life if you took the risks you describe

on the other hand you could become a jobless, penniless bum alone on a beach somewhere in the middle of the greatest storm of the century with nary a cardboard box to call home

or you could play safe and regret it on your nice warm comfy deathbed surrounded by the ungrateful bastards you spawned to replace yourself

its a conundrum, no doubt about that.......good luck, I hope you are brave and go for the lesser chosen path of blowing the entire 100k on a single spin of the roulette wheel in a casino in monaco

So it's not really a midlife crisis at all!

Just your way of letting people know you have a 100k in saving in these hard times!!

Good now you can give Sean Quinn a dig out with his legal costs. Since your richer than him now.

If you are wanting to find some meaning to it all…there are a lot of ways you can go with that.

I started yoga teaching training and in that met a lot of people in search for some "meaning" and through that I have definitely started to see the world and life in a very different manner.

It really depends on what you want to achieve from it all…but realistically you don't need to ditch in your life or your job or spend all the money…you can right where you are. Start right now…look up some things that might be happening in the coming weeks and months. There are a lot of books you could read, everyone with their own message and from things like that, you can make your own decisions about what you believe is right and what suits you.

Plus you're only 36, in 35 and if I thought the age of mid life crisis was 36…I be having a fit. You're far too young for that!

    Settle that head :)

Take three months off work and go travelling.

100k? Dude, go backpacking for a few years. (I'm not saying you'll discoiver yourself before people jump on me).

If your life is getting you down, then get away from it. Go back packing because at least that way you'll meet people. You tend to meet more people in hostels than hotels.

Hang around a beach in thailand for a few months. Then go to Oz for a while. Stop off in india for a while. Go to south america and drink rum on a carribean beach whilst salsa dancing till the sun comes up.

You sound like you just need to get away from everything for an extended period of time. It's not like the money will do you any good unless you spend it and you'll never get a chance to do something like this unless you do it now.

And If youy go for 3 years, you'll probably still have 2/3 of your money when you get back. If you get back. You might end up settling down with some colombian beauty :)

You might live to be 120+ years of age, so it could also be a 'quarter' life crisis you are having.

Do what ever makes you happy. Maybe go for a city break to Prague and shoot some guns and sleep with call girls, i think that would be a great thing to do, really.

Has no other female boardsie offered yet? Fine, op, you can impulsively marry me, we'll head off round the world together for a year or two, spend some of the cash, then when we get, we'll settle down, i'll have the kids and you can go back to work....simples!

Ahh no, jesting aside, why not use your spare time outside of work to try new stuff? Surfing/rock climbing/givie money to local charities and volunteer with them. Become a weekend tourist, fly somewhere new every second weekend... Enjoy yourself!

Life is waaay too short and unless you wanna invest or buy a house(!!) if i were you, i'd use that money to enjoy life a little more... :)

May I respectfully suggest that you make an investment in a pair of reading glasses, don't soldier on, stubbornly refusing to believe what's in front of your own eyes, namely 'large text'.

Yes, you've come to that stage in your life.

This, absolutely this. Now is the time, I read a decent budget backpacking trip around the world would take a year and cost around thirty grand, which sounds about right to me. Go wander Asia, meet strange people, life is all about the experiences. Fear nothing.

I did three months in south america for 3 grand. That's including flights. I slummed a bit, but not that much. Some of the best time I spent. And I certainly don't think that if I'd spent 3 months here it would have made my life any better at all.

Did you get the runs / scutters / diarrhoea when you were there?

I met an irish guy in colombia (one of the first countries I did) who said he could summarise every South American country with two sentances.

    Argentina:
Best steak in the world (true)
Everyone looks like a model (Also true)

    Bolivia:
Cheapest place you'll ever go (True so far)
    You'll get sick.

On my frst day i caught a bug and spent 24 hours with a temp & retching. It took about 8 hours from me crossing the border to when i got sick.

I spent a month in Bolivia and pretty much everyone I knew there came down with either vomiting, the runs or both for at least a day at some point. I met a guy who said it never happened to him because he drank tap water everywhere. He thought it was our inability to deal with common bugs there and that a bolivian would have the same reaction if he went to Europe. I went prepared though. Brought everything right down to antibiotics with me just in case.

If I had the money, I'd head back tomorrow :)

Step 4: Get ticket to the next flight to anywhere.
Step 5: Who the fukk knows, that's the fun part.

Life is too short not to do the things you want, enjoy.

Better still, relax under a beach umbrella , iced drink in hand, watching teams of Africans dig wells for €2 a day. Get teams from different villages and start a league, you have a feast in the village of the team that digs the deepest each week and everyone's invited.

Ok so I've got in excess of a decade on you, nothing in the bank, 2 kids (24/17 both still at home) and a Husband who I rarely see due to his long hours, about to become a Granny and unemployed (long-term :()for the the first time in my adult life!! Now that's a mid-life crises!! Take a holiday, an activity type based one where you will meet like-minded souls, have a party, tell your mates to bring some friends. widen your social circle....find a hobby, you have enough to fund it!! And in the true tradition of the Irish Mammy, take a career break....you'd be foolish imo to resign from any job that allows you to maintain such savings in this climate!! Good Luck and enjoy:)

Quit the job and with the free time go on a ****-a-thon.

Then we might finally get an answer to that age old question: Just how many consecutive masturbation sessions can a man have before his cock and balls fall off?

You might even be awarded a Honorary doctorate from Tyne and Wirrel Institute of Medical Studies or some other sh!tty College nobody has ever heard of.

Sorry if this was said before.

Would it be possible to go on a career break for a number of years? Do loads of traveling? Holidays you always wanted to go on? Having the cash is an obvious big bonus. If you can afford to blow a chunk of it then go for it.

If it all works out well then you have just made yourself a new life and if it goes belly up, then go back to your day job.

Enjoy it, all means fock all in the end anyway and no matter what the out come I'll bet anything you wont regret going crazy for awhile.

*If you are looking for a life guidance my rates start at a bag of coke and 200 euro.

Go up to a homeless person and ask them to swap lives with you, hand over everything you own to them, then walk in there shoes for two weeks, make sure you get them to sign something saying they have to hand back whatever is left in 2 weeks.

36 is too young for a mid life crisis.
