Just wondering why cats poo is acceptable and dog poo ain't?
I've never once seen anyone pick up after their cat or horse (I know horse poo is wonderful for roses though, that lovely scent) for that matter. What about Fox poo? It drives my dog crazy as Bat****.
    What gives peeps?

    My cats bury their poo.

    My dog would eat it.

It would be kinda hard to follow Mr Tibbles along back walls, through hedges, under fences etc with a pooper-scooper.

    That's why.

it isn't, plain and simple but people who have cats generally don't give a **** and let them wander freely anyway so they're hardly going to clean up after them

horse poo is the councils problem and being veg based is less risky to people health. this dates back to when horses were the main transport mode and has never been changed (apart from Kerry and horse nappies)

foxes are wild animals and therefore the councils problem also in public or your problem on your property.

I can't imagine the problem you must be having with cat poo OP. Unlike dogs, and I'm a fan of dogs so don't get me wrong, cats dig a hole, take a crap and cover it back up. They're little geniuses, unlike dogs who'll stop, squat and pop one out no matter where they might be.

Toxocariasis. It's a gastrointestinal parasite in dogs that sheds eggs in the digs faeces, and if ingested can cause uniocular blindness in children. With 1 in 100,000 people affected in Ireland we have one of the highest rates of it in the world so its important for people to clean up after their dogs.

While Toxoplasmosis is a concern in cats, generally only pregnant women and the immunosuppressed are at risk, plus cats are quite sanitary in faecal matters and do it in a private-ish place.

I don't know many people with pet horses or foxes but I'd imagine the pooper scooper would be fairly hefty for the former.

I recently found out that cats are the only animal to domesticate themselves. They basically hung around farms when humans first settled down into permanent settlements, as it was an easier source of food.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/06/28/AR2007062802343.html?hpid=topnews

    TL;DR - Cats domesticated humans.

You make it sound like it's a parasite only found in dogs, it's roundworm and it's way more common in cats.

Cats are vermin, stinking creatures and their owners are just as bad for letting them roam free.

Yes, burying it is much much worse!! If the buried it ten foot deep with a loading shovel you might have a point, but not when they bury it an eighth of an inch deep with their rotten paws.

Ah I see the usual medieval inquisitionistas are out tonight!

Tis a cat! It must be the Devil himself....arrrgghhh !

I do sometimes hope that this primitive mindset might actually evolve but from some of the replies here I doubt it is going to happen.

OP re cat poo being acceptable - I dont think so just cats tend to be a bit more discrete about it and bury it - even if that is in your flower bed....well they have to do something to disguise the smell ;)

    Re Toxicaris

    http://m.wisegeek.com/what-is-toxocariasis.htm
Toxocariasis is a type of parasitic infection that occurs when a person accidentally swallows traces of cat or dog feces that contain roundworm eggs. Ingested roundworm larvae spread throughout the human gastrointestinal tract, which can lead to abdominal pain and nausea. In severe cases, larvae can cause more widespread problems in the lungs, eyes, or brain. Most infections are considered mild and do not require medical treatment. If toxocariasis causes organ damage or vision problems, however, a physician can administer medications to eradicate the parasite and prevent further complications.

A bit too much misinformation out there tbh.
Infection from dog faeces is more common as dogs tend to dump indiscriminately especially in parks and green areas where children play. That said the infection is normally are considered mild anyway.

Maybe we should get rid of both Cats and Dogs if we are going to use that one ;)

That said cat Shyte does have its uses!

If you have confidential office or personal papers - shred them and add a generous dollop of cat **** - allow to ferment. Not even the most dedicated MI6 agent will be willing to go though that ...

Btw for those advocating feline targeting please note that despite urban legend stating otherwise the shooting of domestic pets or other animals of domestic origin may very well result in a criminal conviction and / or loss of firearm licence. You are not allowed to shoot tiddles and or fido even if they do take a crap on your prize bergonias.

Any one any other useful uses for CS ?

Jiffy bag filler for instance for those who don't appreciate cats perhaps ...:D

I have pondered this deeply; it is a profound question and brings us to sensitive areas of the human psyche. Why is one type of shyte acceptable and not others? The answer lies in the shyter: if the originator of the poo is perceived to be of greater worth than another then the poo is acceptable. As humans we need to differentiate between one poo and another, one shoe and another, one county and another. But the great revelation: once you step in it, all shyte is shyte.

You're right, both Toxocara cati and Toxocara canis are common roundworm, but in terms of human epidemiology T. cati is deemed much less of a risk due to the defecation habits of cats. While cats tend to hide or bury their poo, dogs will drop and run, leaving the eggs to embryonate in gardens, parks and play areas where ingestion is more likely [for example O'Lorcain (1994) found 15% of 228 samples taken from 9 playgrounds in Dublin contained T. canis eggs, with no T. cati eggs found] and, given that the present consensus is that transmission to humans occurs mainly through contact with contaminated soils ( Barriga, 1988, Glickman, 1993, Kazacos, 1991, Lloyd, 1998 and Overgaauw, 1997) it makes dogs the more likely transmitter of the parasite to humans.

When you say "way more common", what do you mean? Anything between 80% and 99% of puppies are born with T. canis infection, in adult dogs that number reduces but varies widely depending of a number of factors (worming, contact with other infected dogs, living area sanitation). In a study of Irish stray/ unwanted dogs 22.5% of adult dogs were found to be infected, 80% of puppies had worms in their intestine (Roddie et al. 2008). In owned dogs the numbers are understandably lower but still significant in terms of epidemiology: 4.3% of household dogs in Japan (Itoh et al., 2004), 41% of kennel dogs in The Netherlands (Overgaauw, 1998), 48.4% of rural dogs in the Marche region of Italy (Habluetzel et al., 2003). Fisher (2003) provides a review of prevalence studies of T. cati which records infection rates of 2% (cat colony in the Netherlands) up to 79% (stray cats in Denmark). so all in all I don't think T. cati infection is "way more common" than T. canis infection but I would assert that it's the more important zoonotic agent in terms of human health risks.

Cats almost always bury their crap, because they're thoughtful. So you hardly ever see it around the place.

Cats are malicious, I lived with a very badly behaved one who seemed to have a real dislike for me, came home one day to find a massive cat turd having been left on my bed for the day. That was rank. The smell of it - had to stay with a friend for three days after. Evil little bastard.

Well, to be fair you could argue similar about the dog domestication event(s). It just happened much earlier and was around campfires, rather than farms.

What is unusual about cats is they're solitary animals, so plugging into a pack animal mentality like humans must have been a bit of a stretch for them initially. Then again some research has shown domestic cats when a roaming will meet up with other cats in a loose neighbourhood "pack" which doesn't happen in the wild cats so maybe we rubbed off on them a bit too?

Toxoplasma Gondii is found in cats, and can affect anyone who comes into contact with cats. It's generally not fatal, but it does effect your brain.
humans with latent infections of the common protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii appear to experience a variety of long-term personality changes (Webster 2001). For instance, in infected women, intelligence, superego strength (rule-conscious, dutiful, conscientious, conforming, moralistic, staid and rule-bound) and affectothymia (warm, outgoing, attentive to others, kindly, easy-going, participating and likes people) are higher, while infected men have lower intelligence, superego strength and novelty-seeking (low novelty-seeking indicates rigid, loyal, stoic, slow-tempered and frugal personalities); both infected men and women have higher levels of guilt-proneness (they tend to be more apprehensive, self-doubting, worried, guilt prone, insecure, worrying and self-blaming; Flegr & Hrdy 1994; Flegr et al. 1996, 2000, 2003).

Cats don't always dig a hole. Usually they just scrape a bit of soil across it. This is still not a good thing because they often poo in childrens' sand pits, and because it's hidden parents are unaware of it until the child digs it up. They also poo in vegetable beds, digging up seedlings, and creating the danger of passing on faeces borne diseases through the food chain.

Even taking the risk of disease out of the equation, how is it fair to expect someone who doesn't have cats to clean up after yours? How can people wonder why there is animosity toward cats when they foul other peoples gardens?

Cat poo is not fine, it's not harmless, and if you own a cat then you have a responsibility to clean up after it, the same as dog owners do. Would it be ok for me to let my dogs poo in your garden as long as I kicked some leaves or a bit of mud over it afterward? Of course not!

People seem to miss that the outdoors is full of "poo" from all sorts of animals, even in cities. Mice, rats, cats, dogs, foxes(even badgers), birds, insects etc. Poo and pee all over the place. Go more rural and the list gets longer again. Hell enough studies have shown remarkable amount of human poo on common objects. Dogs eggs are just obvious. Stealthy pooers they are not. While sensible precautions are well, sensible I do think people need to unclench a bit.
