I'm in a similar spot. Down in Cork and looking to do my first Triathlon this year. Was thinking of the Escape from Spike which is August 6th. Maybe I should aim for something sooner. Can't really join a club with a smally at home and another one coming in March (well the wife does),
At the mo I'm just doing 5k a week on the local track at lunch and doing two sessions of light weights a week. Hoping to get back into cycling to work by the end of the month with will add 100k a week in cycling and will up the running to 20k a week. I'm a good swimmer so was thinking of getting back into that around March when the general fitness is up. Problem is time, anyone recommend a beginner friendly triathlon in Munster in the early summer? I don't even know stuff like, what to bring on a triathlon, where do you stash your gear, do you need a licence to cover insurance..
Time to start googling stuff and have a look at youtube.

Will Escape from Spike island be happening this year? I believe there were some "issues"?

I have no idea but I hope so. I heard that they got the start time wrong so as soon as the swimmers cleared the shelter of Haulbowline Island, the tide pulled a lot of them resulting in some pretty knackered swimmers. Hopefully that will be addressed. I don't know anything else bad or good.

Sorry another newbie question...how is your bike rack position determined? Is this by number, first come first serve basis, dependent on race etc?

    Cheers...

Dependent on race. Generally pre numbered places for bigger races, free for all smaller races.

All of the above. Races can group you by number, swim wave (as in swim ability), age group, club affiliation, or simple alphabetical or numerical order. Or you may have random racking.

Some people bring their own rack to transition and put in in a prime location

(needless to say they get moved (most of the time))

For races which are free, any tips in finding your rack for both transitions?

Find a reference point nearby (tree, fence sign etc). Walk transition from entry to exit points,to familiarise yourself, and count the number of rows to your rack.

Saw an interesting thing about people tying a helium balloon to their bike so they can spot it in a rush during a triathlon. All very well till some smart arse decides to move your balloon.
Anyway I've signed up for the Monkstown Sprint Triathlon in Cork. Nice easy one to start with. 750/20/5.
I looked at the list on Triathlon Ireland and most of them don't have an online option to enter. Is it that they are full or just not open for entry yet or do you just email the organising club with your details?
    TIA.

It was probably moved cause its against the rules to mark your spot in transition.

I found Athy to be very beginner friendly. My one and only tri. The swim in the river gives you a taste of the rough and tumble of an open water swim. But it’s also fairly easy to navigate. Well, when I say easy, I mean it’s straight up and down but I still zig-zagged all over the place.

The cycle is grand, plenty of company and the run is nice, a bit crowded perhaps.
