Ive been waiting for this to come up and ordered in my local argos.

1 point of note, every review says same thing, great chips but flimsy parts. mate got one last year and he said same, cooks fantastic but very poor build quality so when youre picking up make sure you hold on to receipt for warranty. which is true for all products bought in argos anyway but just to note one should take a bit more care with this one in case return is needed.

If you pay by card that can be used as proof of purchase too, incase the receipt gets lost.

Yes, true and argos are very good at returns. However, I think this is always a contentious one if you're looking for money back. If you bought a couple of things, lets say the total was 200e, the item youre returning is 150e but is now only 100e in a sale. your visa or laser will just show 200e for combined total, how do the staff at argos know you bought item A at the full whack?
If youre looking for money back you may only get the sale price without the actual receipt itself as your laser/visa statement entry only shows that you bought "something" from them at some stage.

unless they can tie your laser/visa card receipt to something internally on their systems?

It says at the bottom of the Argos page that the price is valid until the 18th but I'd imagine they'll be snapped up long before then. I've been waiting for a decent price on them for ages. Happy days. :)

my guess is, it's quite easy to check the price on a particular day

Can anyone see an option to order in a Cork store? Many thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,519 ✭✭✭Oral Slang

Have searched most Dublin & surrounding stores & can't seem to find one anywhere. Can't see how you can order in, is that option gone? I've emailed customer services, but if anyone can advise, I'd appreciate it. Was going to buy one of these from Amazon during Black Friday but didn't really have the money & this price is even better.

on the site, go through putting a reservation in for it, it lets you click something to "order in" at that point.

Looking forward to this one. :)

Can't see that option at all, unless I'm blind. Still no response to my email from this morning, so doubt I'll get one.

Picked up mine yesterday. Made chips.

    Thoughts:
Its very loud. Expected it to make noise but not this much.
Takes over 40 mins to cook. Add to the time how long it takes to peel, chip, wash and dry potatoes.
Doesn't make a boat load of chips. Enough I guess for 2 hungry people but not anywhere close for a family.
Chips tasted different. I would say better than oven chips. Much crispier and drier and probably better, but depends on what you are in to.
Its big - storage may be an issue for some.

I would say it is a big improvement over a deep fat fryer (not that I ever had one) but not much better than oven chips.

Got to work out the calorie and cost difference now to figure out if it is a good investment as taste alone does not justify 100 quid.

Has anybody tried cooking chicken wings in it yet since that will be it's main use.

I normally cook 750g to 1Kg of wings at a time.

No. We've had one for a few years. Takes 20 minutes to cook chips from frozen but they are much nicer than cooking chips in the oven.

Cooks lovely sausages too. It is a bit loud but that is really the only downside and even then its not too bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,519 ✭✭✭Oral Slang

But to cook fresh chips rather than frozen, how long does it take? I'd imagine if most people go to the trouble of getting these to make chips like chipper/deep fat fryer chips, that they won't be using frozen chips.

For anyone that wants one, I just got an email from Customer Services, to say they are expecting more stock in. Can't be sure that they won't go up in price when the stock comes in, but that wasn't mentioned in the email.

A full load of chips made from fresh potatoes took 43 mins. Could probably knock 5 mins off but doubtful much more.

The other thing I noticed - put the fryer away about an hour after using it and the underneath of it was very hot.

I was tempted to pull the trigger on a purchase over the coming days. That's sealed it for me. No chance.

Did you par-boil the chips before putting them in the fryer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,614 ✭✭✭The Sparrow

I maintain that McCains Home Fries Straight Cut frozen chips in the Actiffry are as nice as any chips I have been served in a restaurant. 20 mins is all you need for lovely crispy chips.

I've only done fresh chips a couple of times because they were not any nicer but they took about 30 mins.

    Par boil first?
Not a chance I am going to go to all that hassle for some chips.

And as for 43 mins, I just followed the instructions provided.

Another thing I should mention - while it does have a timer, when the time expires, it does nothing. It does not auto-shutoff and there was no beeping.

Saying all this though, I am half tempted to make some more tonight :-)

I will probably give the oven chips a go as well but losing half the advantage (lower calorie count).

Also found that 100g of fresh cut chips are about 193kcal and 100g of oven chips is 275kcal.

I think yours might have a fault. I have experienced two actifrys and both beeped when the timer was finished and cut off and stopped cooking .I believe that older models from a few years ago beeped when the times was done but did not stop cooking.

I have found around 30 mins is enough for the chips. I havent had a deep fat frier in forever so I can't remember how long they took but I remember having to wait while oil heated up and having to keep a constant eye on the frier while it did its thing. With this there's no heating up time. You just throw your stuff in and go off to watch telly and wait for the beep.

It's also makes lovely sausages, roast vegetables eg carrots cut into strips are lovely out of it, chicken fillets come out of it succulent and delicious too. You aren't curtailed to chips there are loads of healthy foods you can make easily & conveniently. Oh and it uses only a fraction of the electricity that your oven uses.

It does beep for a few seconds when the timer counts down but does not auto shut off, small issue really. I made some fresh chips today using olive oil, took 30 mins cooking time and they were very nice, actually they were quiet sweet!

The newer ones do turn off. It was silly to leave earlier models without that feature.

    How's the smell lads?

The big deterrent against having a deep fat fryer is I fecking hate the smell of the things.

Is there an real oily smell lingering after use?

Hmmm... might be a buy for me!

Though not sure if I'd use it.

McCain's Simply Gorgeous Chips in the oven are hard beaten... though they are up on €4 for a small bag!
