Just thinking earlier that facebook has had around 3-4 years now of being the worlds main social media site it replaced bebo myspace etc
I was wondering ia it really here to stay will we be using it in 2,5,10+ years?
What could replace it? Will social media just die out?
Im not a big user of facebook i just find that the more we interact online the less we see of eachother in person but anyway rant over
do you think facebook is here to stay?

I've got 16,371 really good friends on FB. How else would they know I'm doing inane shit if there was no FB for them to see it?

whatever does will have to be able to suck your data out of facebook (which i think will prove the tricky bit)

Penpals are coming back into style again. I reckon they'll out-popularise Facebook as a social networking medium.

    aaronjumper likes this.

I would say it is not going to go away. As long as people have nothing to say, they will say it on facebook.

It's probably ok for 15-20 year olds. I find it embarrising when I hear mothers talking about facebook down in the local pub. Wouldn't bother with it myself. No intrest in telling everybody that I pissed sideways last night.

    There's no need to though.
It's easy to just block stuff/people you dont want to hear from.
Giving out about it is like kicking yourself in the head, then complaining that you've a headache.

I have never used it, but seems everyone in work does these days.

Over recent months I have heard more and more people giving off about it, and saying they aren't on it as much, so there is a likelihood that it will get less popular, but since it has hundreds of millions of users, I'm sure it will still be getting used in 10yrs time by some people.

Having said that, folk these days are so fickle that if a better site for watching silly videos and telling the world what you had for breakfast comes along, they may well abandon FB en masse.

    Haha!

Every Google account user "has" a google plus account, doesn't mean they actually use it.

I say it's on downward slope, a slow moving one but all the same. I'm coming across more and more people that are losing interest in the whole idea, myself included.

It's them students fault for all this FB muck. Bring back tuition fees, cull the grant and leave 'em all at home in their little parishes...no need for FB then.

I was always notified that there were women waiting for me in Carrickmines. I was interested, but there was no easy way to get there on the bus from where I lived. Alas...

On topic - as soon as it becomes 'hip' to leave Facebook, it's done for. All it really has going for it is its fashionability. The negative press about Facebook and privacy/cyberbullying/etc in the mass media has been slowly growing over the last 12 months or so, I'd say by this time next year it will only be more common. It's hard to say what will replace it though. I would hope that people will be more aware of terms of service, data protection, and the fact that if they're using a service for free it's the online equivalent of a shopping center - a private space the public are allowed into, and while they're inside, they must follow the rules, however strange they are. Some support for a project like Diaspora would be interesting, I am curious to see how issues around monetisation would work as the userbase increases to something approaching Facebook or Twitter.

facebook will last until there's a major evolution in how social media works, i give it 5 more years before something new comes to the table.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,783 ✭✭✭maglite

3-4 years... Noob... I was late coming to Facebook in late 06.

I'd think Facebook will be around until they over monetize it. and there is a decent alternative.

It will eventually die. It's becoming over run with sponsored ads, ads, and ads. Bots will ruin it, thankfully.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,207 ✭✭✭miralize

Every website bar Google/Amazon/news site goes through a cycle. Facebook will not die out but will be overshadowed by a more compelling competitor. It happened to MySpace, Bebo, Plurk, Orkut, Jaiku.. it will happen to Facebook, eventually

The teens will switch to something else. It will be over by the time we learn about it. Its must be seriously uncool for a teen to use Facebook now and have his mother wanting to be his 'friend'.

yes its time to sell your shares, they have peaked

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 389 ✭✭Jamey

Its has definitely peaked already - around 2010 I'd say.

Now, less and less people seem to be uploading photos and more people seem to be deactivating their profiles or leaving them untouched.

While I do spend a good bit of the day on it, usually just to chat to friends abroad, I don't update my status nor upload photos where as I did very regularly around 2009/2010.

Deactivated my Facebook account. Just sick of 'like' this and 'like' that. 'Like' this picture to cure a child with cancer and all that crap. Just couldn't be bothered anymore.

Anyone who i regard as being a friend I can text, call or email. If I wanted to be friends with someone i went to school with 10yrs ago I'd have made the effort then.

Find Twitter much better. You pick & choose what you see. Someone annoys you or bores you then just 'unfollow' them. Its a fantastic resource with oceans of info in real time.

    Don't miss Facebook at all.

I personally can't stand twitter. For the same reasons you don't like Facebook. I deleted my twitter cos I didn't like seeing people post their random uesless thoughts and seeing all this 'RETWEET FOR BELIEBERS <3<3' bs. I just didn't like the way it worked, especially the ass-kissing of so-called celebrities. Personal preferences I suppose.

People whinge and moan about all this '1 like = 1 prayer' crap and what you can actually do (believe it or not) is hide certain people on your newsfeed. Or you can delete them. I've done this and it's brilliant. Now all I have is stuff from people I actually care about and not people I never interact with. I also blocked people on chat so I don't have to flick through a few names to see who's online.

The filtering options on FB are very useful and if people knew how to use them there'd be less whinging about the people abusing it and more praise about the people making good use of it
