Ravi Shankar has just passed away and I didn't want to start another thread about this so I said let's just have a bit of a chat thread for random stuff.

Here's Ravi teaching George Harrison how to play Sitar in 1968.

    Also...
    What the actual balls:
Sir Paul McCartney is to front Nirvana for one night only, it has been reported, when surviving members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic reunite for the first time in 20 years.

The former Beatle, not exactly known for his gravelly voice and brooding on-stage persona, is a choice of front-man that is likely to bewilder many Nirvana fans.

McCartney will reportedly perform a new song with the pair at Hurricane Sandy charity concert 121212, which will also feature The Rolling Stones and takes place in New York tonight.

He has been secretly working in the studio with Grohl and Novoselic, who formed the main line-up of the iconic grunge band along with singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain who committed suicide in 1994.

"The former Beatle, not exactly known for his gravelly voice........"

'Helter Skelter', 'Why Don't We Do It In The Road?', 'Oh! Darling' etc.
    Obviously not gravelly enough.

Not quite the same. Cobain's vocals were a lot more effortless, for want of a better word. In those songs you mentioned McCartney is kinda straining his voice and is quite loud. In any case, McCartney isn't known for a gravelly voice anyway, especially not nowadays.

Damn stupid idea the say the least, I really hate these contrived revivals be they one offs for the anniversary or a dumb ass tour.

I see Rush are to be inducted into the Hall of Fame or whatever its called, like they give a fvck! :p

They all get in this year.
The hall of fame sounds like a load of crap to me considering who's in and who isn't.

When you say it out loud it sounds more like "Are you ready to toke?" than something encouraging more discussion.

ZZ Top tickets going on sale tomorrow (Friday) for the Marquee, anybody going?
Wouldn't mind seeing them but not a good time of year to be buying tickets.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse playing the RDS on June 15th 2013, hoping to pick up tickets to that one.

Also looking forward to The Gaslight Anthem on June 17th.

Gaslight Anthem have announced a second date on the 18th.

Not too sure about Neil Young, he's already played here a couple of times in recent years but the addition of Crazy Horse it might increase demand.

I'll be booking early anyway, just in case.

I assume Neil is just going to play this song for 2 hours (not that I object to that idea)...

talking of Macca earlier, "Wonderful Christmas Time" came on the radio earlier and 2 things occurred to me:
    • he's probably made as much (or more) money out of that POS than some of the great Beatles songs
    • It sounds like it took about as much time to write as it does to sing - it is the very definition of tossed-off

similarly, Chris Rea must be getting a huge chunk of his annual income from radio play of "Driving home for Christmas"

If there are no ZZ Top tickets left by the time I can afford one, I will be unhappy. They're such a class act, and not having to travel would just be the icing on the cake.

Got Neil Young tickets there, they were shilling the new album with the order.

Didn't see any option to say 'no thanks', thought about it and figured I didn't mind too much so went with it.

Is selling an album with tickets a common thing?

I've never heard of it either, can't afford them at the minute anyway but I think my sister might be getting a few so I might get one of them.

To be honest, before gigs, that don't involve an act popular with the kids, in venues like the RDS you can pick up tickets handily enough closer to the date. My old work had an electronic bulletin board and there were always ones going.

I was close to not hitting the buy tickets button but getting paid tonight swung it. Will be glad I did when it rolls around.

Good bands at the Marquee is brilliant. Gig - the cost of a trip to Dublin. I don't think there is ever a problem getting tickets for Marquee gigs with the exception of maybe huge names like Elton John or someone like 50cent at the height of their popularity. The fact that tickets are so easy to come by probably goes some way to explaining why there aren't more regular gigs down this end of the country.

"The Black Eyed Peas are rock for people who don't like rock, rap for people who don't like rap and pop for people who don't like pop."

Quote from a us office episode I saw recently.

That's how I feel about your thread title suggestion.

    It's actually good.

Unfortunately this is like one of those scenarios where you're choosing a restaurant on holiday.

If we went with the first good suggestion we'd have nothing to talk about all night.

What about greatest hits? That's what all my favourite albums are called for some reason.
