The receptionist who put through a prank call at the hospital treating the Duchess of Cambridge is understood to have committed suicide.

The woman, was the first to pick up the phone to the Australian DJs pretending to be the Queen and Prince Charles, and put the call through to the nurse caring for the Duchess.

Sky News' Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said: "It does appear that the receptionist who put the original call through has been found dead, thought to be suicide."

This was a real wtf moment

That is tragic. She makes a mistake at work which she probably got slaughtered for it and saw no other way out. Poor woman. :(

I can only imagine this was the absolute worst timing possible for this girl and that she was unable to get any kind of perspective on the matter. Taking your life over a prank call, very sad.

I wasn't aware there was any kind of prank call.

I'm sure they'd rather pass on condolences and then question her peer group or local media if any pressure was forced upon her due to a simple mistake.

    Christ, that's awful...

Can't imagine what those DJ's will be going through over the next while. You just know the internet will seek them out and blame them for this.

    RIP.

What is even more tragic than her death is that someone is bound to be posting here shortly with a stupid attempt at something funny. Yes it is After Hours but there is nothing funny about someone dying, no matter how it happened

C'mon! How on earth were they supposed to know?

And it's not different to what our own DJ's do (albeit on a slightly smaller scale) which you and a million other people who will feign outrage laugh at in the mornings.

    That's very sad.

Sure sign of how much work or a mistake at work can hamper someones life.

    It's already happened in AH.

I expect calls for their resignation by 4pm GMT.

It definitely sounds like that to me. There must've been something else going on with her. I can't imagine many people committing suicide over just a prank call.

Too damn right. It doesn't require much skill to bull**** a busy hotel / hospital receptionist especially when the worlds media are sat on the doorstep. That pair of kangaroos should be winging it to a dole queue.

RIP to the lady in question.

Too right, and the media in general....she made an honest mistake, but the Aussie guys knew what they were doing and set things in motion......

This story highlights how ****ed up the world is, the press, the public and the palace made her feel terrible and she took her life. So sad.

My initial reaction would be "and good riddance too".
On reflection, I'd still be thinking it's time for them to hang up their prank call antics.

Just think what this poor girl went though in the last few days, positively ridiculed all over the place, and not thinking there was any end to it.

    No they bloody well don't.

They made a prank phone call for their radio show. Probably one of hundreds they've done in their careers. This is in no way their fault.

girl gets prank call by radio station on royal baby

Royals not happy, complain to hospital

Hospital give her the most almighty bollocking possible (maybe worse wiht possible disciplinary action ahead)

    Girl commits suicide

    --

I've filled in what I think has happened, and there might be even more personal stuff there. I don't really think that needs to be analysed too deeply tbh.

If the girl has committed suicide that has been triggered by a prank call, then its a complete tragedy.

Bullying, in whatever form, usually has consequences.

I cant say I have much sympathy for them. If they had left her be they wouldnt be in this situation.

If a schoolkid made a prank call like this they'd have got a kick in the arse for it

I don't see how, they can't be held responsible for the weakness of mind of a person. Pranks are carried out everyday. This wasn't concerted bullying or intimidation.

It may have more to do with the make up of some English people that believe that the Royal family are some kind of deities.

    Poor woman.

Rip to the poor girl . People blaming the djs are stupid eejits . It was a joke how did they know thisll happen .

I feel sorry for the DJ`s they must be feeling pretty horrible now. There had to be more going on with her for a prank to drive her to suicide. I imagine the Daily Mail and their ilk will go after the DJ`s without a trace of irony.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭tmc86

Its one thing ringing something like a pet shop or DIY store to make a prank call but to ring a hospital is a different story.

The DJ's should have had more sense obviously they weren't expecting anything to come from it but their call still took up some of the nurses time which could have been spent elsewhere where it was needed.

You just don't go ringing doctors, hospitals, emergency services etc on prank calls. I hope those DJ's get some kind of backlash because the least it will do will be teach others not to be so stupid. /rant

jesus that's horrible - the poor woman was given world attention she didn't want and couldn't handle it, RIP. I dunno, there's so many horrific stories at the moment,i'm getting worn down by it all. I think it's time I tune out for a while.

Why? I'd lay more of the blame at the doorstep of the sycophantic British media, who let's face it turned a molehill into a mountain with their feigned outrage.

Of course the suicide could be completely unrelated to the phone call. I'd imagine there was other issues at play. Tragic nevertheless.

I'm sorry, but I can't agree with you here.

Prank phone-calls are made for radio shows every day. Mick Mulcahy has made people look 10 times worse on 96 and 103FM in his time, and it's entertaining. The call itself was funny to listen to.

You can't legislate for how people are going to react to it.

Now they're saying it's the nurse, not the receptionist

    http://news.sky.com/story/1022287/royal-prank-call-nurse-commits-suicide

Which would certainly make more 'sense'.

A receptionist would just put the call through to the Nurses station. The nurse gave out information.

Taking the royal element out of it for a minute, is there even anything funny about ringing a hospital impersonating a relative to obtain sensitive information?

    I don't think so.

    RIP to the poor woman.

Pranks perpetrated on one person can be funny if they don't do any damage.

This was more than a prank, it was social engineering in an attempt to pull a prank on a celebrity. It would have been obvious beforehand that if they were successful, then everyone who they convinced to pass their call onto the next person in the chain, would lose their job. And that could potentially ruin people's lives.

While suicide is the worst possible outcome here and not really their direct fault, the tiniest bit of forethought here about the consequences of their actions and they would have realised that it was a dangerous thing to try.

Conmen and social engineers leave a lot of collateral damage in pursuit of their goal. They're scum. So are these guys.

    they started off with receptionist.

The Nurse who actually gave out the info would make more 'sense' if that's the right word.

either way RIP to the poor woman.

The fact she apparently committed suicide over this, was the hint for me. Strong minded people generally don't commit suicide.

Would it not be more appropriate to question Williams angry response to the prank and the SKY/TV overkill --surely he might feel a little contrite rather than the 2 djs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 469 ✭✭geetar

jesus thats outrageous. i dont think you can blame the dj's. she was probably tormented by staff, and her hospital should have briefed them all on who to take calls for.

she must have been emotionally fragile before the whole thing happened

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,126 ✭✭✭Reoil

What on earth makes people take such drastic actions over something so ultimately meaningless?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,009 ✭✭✭✭wnolan1992

    Then why make them.

Because they're entertaining to listen to?

If Dara O'Briain or Tommy Tiernan or any one of a million other comedians took the piss out of someone in their audience (as they do on a nightly basis) and that person happened to commit suicide, would you be calling for them to not do their acts?

The call was made for a joke, a joke which I personally thought was pretty funny. Sure, it's awful that this poor woman was hounded by the media and made feel worse about a simple mistake, but then you have to ask should we not be blaming the media that hounded her?
