rathdown motors no reserve auction

I see Merlin auctions are selling off rathdown motors cars and workshop equipment on Saturday.
I wonder what the prices will be like. Should be interesting enough seeing as the cars seem tasty enough and it was retail stock. I guess there will not be too many bargains to be had though. Still someone could pick up a nice garage lift or other tools and the 1000 bidding deposit might keep a lot of clowns from bidding.

Full list for anyone who is interested, cars would be going for around the €10k plus mark I would say, not many bangers for the common man ;)...

Nice tools and a couple of car ramps for sale too, would be nice for myself if I had the space :o

There still must a decent saving importing certain cars from the UK judging from the amount of stock either still on a UK reg plate or in miles.

    LOT 18 Audi A8

I am away the weekend, but would be curious to see what the 2012 A8 might fetch (LOT18)
If anyone can post what it makes it would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Just to clarify & save boards form trouble they didn't go bust! Business is being closed down by the owners

It was a loss making enterprise, though. Losses were being covered by profits made elsewhere in the group

Whats the story regarding any comeback when you buy a car at auction? Are they sold as seen? I presume theres no chance of a test drive or anything

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

No test drive. No warranty. No comeback.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,846 ✭✭✭discombobulate

No test drive. No warranty. No comeback.
So theres no onus on them to admit any faults etc? And if you buy the car and find all sorts of issues your screwed? Sounds like risky enough business there. Surely there has to be a few comebacks on it i.e. if you bought it and it was a complete donkey and couldn't even drive it away from the place

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 901 ✭✭✭Xpro

No test drive. No warranty. No comeback.

To be fair the stuff that is being offered looks very good and high end
It is totally different auction you`d be used to.

There's no comebacks AT ALL. That's the whole point of buying cars at an auction, you could be buying a gem or a lemon which is why you should be well experienced before placing a bid on any sort of car at an auction.

I agree. The risk should be quite low on most of the lots. I wasnt trying to suggest otherwise. I just answered the questions about test drives and warranty as asked by the poster above.

Also, the high quality of the lots and associated low risk will probably be reflected in the prices fetched tomorrow.

This had a window price of under €9k when they were flogging their stock as cheap as possible the last few weeks but is still there

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/BMW/3-Series/CAR-GOIN/201243210672039/advert?channel=CARS

Lot 44. I know it's a 2l petrol on old tax - and looks like boggo spec but that could go for a song

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,846 ✭✭✭discombobulate

Think i'll avoid auctions myself so although I presume you'd be fairly safe when the source is somewhere like these. Always nice motors in that garage any time I drove by. Shame to see it going.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1 davihun911

    Went for €48k I think. VRT €20k

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

    €47800 + commission ;-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,906 ✭✭✭✭mfceiling

Went there 3 times with the missus looking about changing the motor.

Left details and was promised a call back.....

    Never heard a jot.

    Bought elsewhere.

Anybody know how much the white 320d coupe went for? I was looking at it on carzone about 2 months ago but they were looking for fairly strong money so I went elsewhere

I'd love to know how much the X5 and the red Land rover Discovery went for.
    Was unable to get there

X5 €29k, not sure about the Land Rover.

Does anyone have price info on the garage equipment? Particularly the scissors lifts and the autologic diag gear?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,124 ✭✭✭Mech1

    Autologic went for €7.5K

    Exterior lift €1K

blue scissor lifts €800 approx if i remember right,

    4 poster €900

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

Cheers, the lifts weren't bad value so. I called in for a quick look this morning but couldn't make the auction itself. Thought I would be able to bid online but it would only work for the cars not for the garage equipment.

Jesus I thought that would have gone back to the trade before the auction. Not a bad price

You would have been wasting your time. Whoever bought it will be writing Merlin a cheque for over €28k.

And there I was thinking that cars could be had for a lot less at auction than what you would pay normally.

I've never been to an auction in my life and there's proof!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,104 ✭✭✭dieselbug

A large crowd attended, so much so the start was delayed while they waited for a long line of punters to register.
So the writing was on the wall from early on as regard lots of bargains.

I would've thought the same, not been to a car auction but been to others.

Any idea how much the red Landrover Discovery made? Did it go more than €12k?

    Hi,
Couldn't make the auction - anyone know wthat the 06 CLS & 08 S320 made
    Thanks

Pretty sure red Disco went for €13.5K plus comission etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

The CLS made €12800 plus fees IIRC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1 Marty99

The '08 Merc S320 went for €28,800 + fees (€1,970), €30,770 in total. Not really a bargain at all considering the high mileage on it.

The only thing that seemed a bit cheap was the 12 A8.

So nearly 15k for a 136k km LandRover with no warranty. I like them and think they are a nice car but hardly the most relaible car. That's quite agamble to take. They musta seen him/her coming ;)

Christ the vendors must have been pissing themsleves laughing at that one. There's 150km on the car to boot. Petrol One on DoneDeal for under 12k ;)

And that is/was because it's kinda specialist in the Irish Market and prob in the main sold to order here. Plus it's a lot of cash to come up with at an auction.
    What did it make?

To be fair 150k kms on a 2006 diesel isn't that high. But those Mercs (and the Discovery also) are not the kind of car to buy without a warranty unless you are saving a lot of money, which clearly wasn't the case here since the Disco made pretty much full retail money with the Merc not far off it either.

It's posted previously in the thread, €47800 plus fees plus VRT of just under €21000.

Oh I agree they'd take that with ease but as you allude to, they are pushing on and without a warranty and paying that kind of money to buy, you are leaving yourself open to the risk of very big and nasty bills. There's no way I'd spend the guts of 15 k one these almost 6/7 year old cars when I could prob buy from a main dealer for not a whole lot more.
I'd want to be saving 5k min on retail to make it worth the hassle/risk at this level. Fools and their money and all that :D

Was offered a brand new, unregged one for not much more than that last month.

Seems like the public turned up in droves and caught a bad case of auction fever.

Thanks for that information. It's not really hugely great value: If you wanted an A8 (I might) you could probably have one landed from UK for about that price, but would need to be happy to buy on-line, collect yourself, etc. I did that a few years ago with a nearly new Audi, it worked out fine...
