Do any of the V8/V10 M5s require valve clearance adjustment or was that just an E46 M3 deal?

Thats a requirement of engines with mechanical lifters, which the S65/S85 (M3 e92, M5 E60) dont feature. I dont know how they got around valve float at high RPM!

surely youd save decent bit on insurance too?
Nope the difference between the 535d and M5 was only around 50 euro per year

I would take a 535d m pack over the m5 any day when u consider running costs etc the could of the 535d is really nice compared to other diesels and after a remap you would be looking at a very powerful car.

There is no "etc", the only reason any of us would consider that is because we are all too poor! :pac:
It offers nothing over the M5 other than cheapness to run (relative to the M5).

    Of course it's practical, it's got 5 seats! :D

I saw a guy put €20 petrol into an E60 M5 at Topaz the other day. :( Just as he was pulling out an E92 M3 passed in front of him and stopped at the lights. Lights go green and the M3 tears off up the road, followed by the 5. Probably burned a good deal of what he has just put in the tank, but I was happy with the noise!

I am beginning to think a lot of people here don't get why you would buy a m5 over another car,you do it for the love of what it is a v10, fuel guzzling, 507bhp, high tech, 200mph super saloon. You don't buy it cause it's cheap to run, easy, practical. The fact that a diesel has the same " everyday" performance misses the point m the m5 is not for everyday it's for special days. Sure. A 530d has the everyday performance of the 535d, and sure a 520 has the everyday performance of a 530.......

Until you have experienced the acceleration above 200kph you haven't lived it's amazing, or drifted a 2 ton saloon round a track smoking the tyres with one handed ease.

I think a lot of people want a car that will do everything eg an M5 with 35/40mpg and cheap running costs. Obviously not a reality. I think most people know that if they want a practical car for low mileage but supercar performance then the M5 is the option - but the more and more the upfront price becomes more affordable people (petrol heads) want to try to shoe-horn it into the role of a daily driver. I know I did.............for a while.

20 euro would be about 100km, its thirsty, but its not a jet aeroplane.

Lot of hearsay and speculation and exaggeration of repair bill goes on. For instances 8k for an smg issue is off the wall, the entire system, electronics and all could be replaced for that, most smg issues are due to poor maintenance or previous owners launch controlling it all the time.
For instance the diff oil bleed nut needs to be tightened to a certain torque and a new crush washer each time. So some tool who doesn't know this, induces a leak that costs a 6k smg gearbox.

    :pac:

5.0 litre automatic petrol tuned to have more power than god? nah that'll be cheap on petrol.

What your point? I am not talking as somebody who's brothers, friends, neighbour had one and giving out the Chinese whispers numbers, used to justify why they sold it (only a few people are honest and say they couldn't be bothered paying for the running costs anymore). Yeah repair bill are high, but replace a DCT box in a e92 M3 isnt cheap, sure the SMG system in a e46 M3 would be 4k to replace.

Every time a e60 M5 thread come up, people put prospective buyers off with the notion that all e60 M5;s will always explode in a shower of cogs and springs at some point. My point was that a well maintained (maintained in the BMW network but in jocks garage) will be as reliable as anything else that's high performance

Realistically, what would insurance cost on an M5? I'm 27y/o male, 6 years no claims, no points, no accident. Live in tallaght (might be an issue). Obviously, the only people that can answer are insurance companies but I was wondering if anyone could give me a ballpark figure of what they're paying

I really only do about 6-7500km (yes, kilometres) a year since I started bussing it to work. So a car like this is becoming an option for me as I only drive weekends now.

An M5, M3, Merc CLS and a Jag Xk is pretty much my shortlist of future dream motors. Big step up from an Alfa 147...

Well I have an Audi B7 RS4, started paying 2300 euro per year (3 year ncb, 37 years old, full irish license). The next year by insurance went down to 770 euro per year (4 years ncb, 38 years, full driving license).

    Hope this helps
