How did they prove he wasn't hired simply because he was a Protestant?

Wait, they did prove it right......?

    http://www.independent.ie/national-news/protestant-man-overlooked-for-job-because-of-his-religion-awarded-150000-3302828.html

The tribunal found that former Sinn Fein minister Conor Murphy breached a code of practice when he appointed Sean Hogan to the position as chairman of NI Water in March last year. Mr Hogan was the only Catholic applicant for the job. Four others, all Protestants, were turned down.

And then SF want to get into power down here, vertainly shows them up for what they are, and that is not the party of equality! Maybe they should just join forces with FF.

I always knew they were bigots.....

I am sick of their hypocrisy....on many issues.....

Nowhere in that linked article does it say the protestant didn't get the job, 'despite being the best candidate and most suitably qualified'

Long gone are the days in the six counties when the 'catholics need not apply' note was stuck at the bottom of the job advertisement.

Some in the north aren't happy at the level of equality there is in the system now.

Should some evidence be shown that Mr Hogan wasn't the best candidate for the job I'll eat my words. Gladly.

Being Catholic makes him the best candidate?
The SF slogan "Equality for all Catholics. no prods need apply"!
Dr Lennon agreed to accept £150,000 after an employment tribunal ruled, in June, that he had been subjected to religious discrimination by the Department of Regional Development (DRD).

Would like some salt and pepper with that breakfast of words.

The details provided in the op's link are sketchy to say the least.

It says the man I'm question didn't get the job because he was a protestant, that's all it says.
It does not list his age/suitability/experience of either man, and how one got the job and the other did not.

What if the tables were turned, five applicants, only one catholic, and he didn't get the job? Would it be automatically true that he didn't get it cos he was the catholic in the bunch?

You guys aren't seeing a bigger picture here, and have not provided any further evidence as to why the guy didn't yet the job 'other than he was a prod'

Yea like the tribunal that found that he was a VICTIM of religious discrimination never heard any evidence!
Like he was paid compensation because his claim was without merit.
I like a lot of your posts Ghandee, but sometimes its best not to try defending the indefensible.

It is entirely possible that the most qualified person got the job but other candidates did not have their application treated and considered equally - that's what the payout is for, not that he didn't get the position.

Are Sinn Fein going to a hold an internal investigation into this? For a party who spend so much time arguing against exclusion, discrimination and sectarianism it would be a bit brass-necked of them to try and sweep this under the carpet.

Considering that the person best suited to the job is subjective to a certain degree assuming that all the applicants or at least one of the others had the appropriate training/education/experience. There is nothing strange about wanting to know how discrimination was proved in a case where it might be difficult to so when the article is so sketchy on details. This is a serous matter after all.

Why did the other 3 Protestants not get similar compensation? Was it only one Protestant discrimated against and the other 3 treated fairly?

I wonder would people be so suspicious if it was a Catholic that was discriminated against?

    PS. Mod Note:

Cut out the prod references on the thread.

The fact is, that one catholic from five applicants could just as easily claim he was discriminated against if he hadn't of got the job.

That is unless he wasn't as qualified as the other four applicants.

Sadly, these details haven't been made known to us by the tribunal.

Most job application processes in the north now require you to declare your religion due to equality reasons.

In fact, it is not uncommon to see notes under job ad's (I haven't lived up home in near term years, but I assume it still happens) that certain companies put things like:

X company is an equal opportunities employer, and due to underrepresentation in is work force, we would particularly welcome applicants from the catholic/protestant community.

I don't think you can get definitive proof or at least it usually is very difficult. They would have to go on the available evidence, procedures not followed that type of stuff and make their mind up. By its nature a case like this cannot be 100% certain unless they've taped evidence.

So I'd say you are right to question it but the evidence suggests the other 4 candidates didn't get a fair shout at it.

I'm assuming the tribunal's findings weren't some sort of conspiracy against SF. We could do without replacing one bunch of sectarian cunts, who caused the troubles, with another up north.

Go back in time a few years and you will find plenty of evidence thart Catholic people were treated worse than the blacks in South Africa.

No when it comes to history i am always spot on kid.

As for the case in hand we have a few orange heads crying injustice because they did not get a job and with the orange and prods past record dealing with catholics in the 60' 70's and 80's i personally find it hard to feel sorry for any old orange drummer boy crying injustice.

If all prodestants deserved to be mistreated because of the actions of those who went before do all white people deserve the same because of what went on in South Africa or all Germans because of the concentrations camps or all Americans because of the natives or all Australians because of the aboriginals ?

At some point a line must be drawn.

If you're smart enough to spell "Catholics" then you're smart enough to spell "Protestants". Stop calling people "prods" and "orange", it just makes you come across as a bigot.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,925 ✭✭✭✭anncoates

I'm wondering are there additional facts here to the case because I find it hard to see where the religious discrimination is based on the fact that there was a religious ration of 4:1 in the applicants?

I detest Sinn Fein but I need to see more proof here.

Would be interesting to know who made this decision in the tribunal and for what reason.

You can't help feeling this could just be part of the tedious and interminable - and financially draining - discrimination whataboutery that will continue to bedevil the North.
