Next year is looming, and the crowd said they might considering issuing 131 and 132 cars in lieu of just 13D, 13KK, etc, because they fear superstition might hinder the sale of cars next year. Would you drive a 13D car ?

I am not superstitious in the slightest and would drive 13D1313

Same fad happened at Y2K, people wanted a 00 car .. nuts. Fúcking nuts

Anyone who avoids a number 13 car due to superstition is an idiot.

The mere fact that they're pandering to the idiots out there by even mooting this "131" and "132" bull is just insane.

I don't like the current system of having year numbers on the plates, it seems a bit crude and probably works to overvalue/undervalue them at resale. Creates a bit of snobbishness too. The superstition thing does seem like a silly reason for a country to change it's system of anything all the same.

But what if they drove the car under 13 ladders into a pile of 13 mirrors with 13 black cats sitting on them?

Sorry for going off point but you also head people saying things like "he drives an Audi with a 12 D reg" like as if that would be better than driving an Audi with a 12 TN reg. How is this relevant and why do people say that?

Are Dub-regged cars better than culchie-regged cars? :pac:

I know that in Kerry, some people specifically look for Dublin registered used cars as they're considered to be in better nick due to better road conditions.

I'm not superstitious but there are practical reasons for not wanting to buy a 13 reg car, one being it could potentially be more difficult to sell in the future.

You can't come out with blanket statements like we're all idiots.

Speaking of the "131" and "132" plates, I read somewhere that the speed cameras will not be able to read the plates properly. I think I read that here on the motoring forum. If I find the link, I'll put it up.

    Could be interesting.

To answer the OP, no, I would not be any more superstitious about a "13" reg car than I would be about a "02" reg car.

The new proposed system for 131 and 132 has nothing to do with the year ... Just trying to smooth out the sales over the year rather that having the logistical nightmare that is 20/25% of all new cars been sold in January every year. By having 2 "New Regs" per year they would make it a lot easier to manage the same number of cars through the year

A lot of database schemas for insurance/tax/Nct websites would need to be updated and the web form validation too.

I for one will be driving a '13 reg, but only to p1ss off the neighbours. A 131 reg would be a bonus, cos it will mean I am 119 years better than them in their "old" 12 reg yokes.

Pretty sure the whole idea of this is to just introduce a second buying period in the year for car showrooms. I'd bet money 141 and 142 will be around aswell, despite there being nothing overly superstitious about "14".

I actually know a fella that got €5,000 knocked off the price of his house, because it was number 13. Silly stuff, but at least there's an upside to not being so superstitious.

No, you said "because of a superstition" which is why I wouldn't buy one, the resale value would be less because of a superstition that people have.read your post!

My next car will be a 14 reg.

On a side note, why do some counties have two registrations, e.g. L and LK, but Dublin, with a quarter of all registrations, only has one?

Also, while you're considering these things, why do some counties have two letters and others have one, e.g. Mayo=MO, Dublin=D. Wouldn't it make sense to standardize them all to two letters?

    Because "D" means Town.

Hmm, I had to think of this for a while, I had to make two cups of tea, to consider the issue, but anyway,, after two cups of lovely nice tea later and some deliberating, I'd have to go with no, because I've just won a car.

I only buy a car with Dub reg.... it looks nice and square on a number plate and has a prestige about it.... A dublin reg BMW looks far superior than a BMW with a MO reg and a towbar.

My dad is superstitious in the opposite way. He is the 13th child in his family and writes the letter B in his name like a 13 and only likes to close business deals on the 13th of a month. He thinks property deals go better for him when the house number is 13 or adds up to it and is same about car regs.

Pity he is too broke from bad property deals to buy a new car coz am sure he would love one!!

Every single car in the area I live in has a 13 on the reg and has had since the dawn of time.

I've been knocked down twice in the last year and a half.

Last car we hired had the reg xyz 66613 - I spent the holiday waiting for us to plunge off a cliff in it in a fireball. . We didn't though, which was good. So maybe I am a tad supersticious. It was the 666 bit that got me though, not the 13 - it could have been the Yaris from hell.

Also a lot of hotels dont have rooms with 13 in it eg 213 or 313.

On a side note years ago in work someone charged €40 to room 313 before i learnt this. Got a bollicking for that.

Anyone who buys a car younger than 3 yrs old will lose big time, but then there are the people who feel they need to keep up with the Jones,

this would filter into every part of living, trying to look like they can sit on the top of the list while knowing around the corner they are heading to the bottom of the list,

there are some folks who can afford to get a new motor (or new anything else) with no pressure and the best of luck to them,

as for me I will be buying the 3 year old motor or even 5 year old motor (value) as with laptops, phones, computers and face cream.

Just noted the latest piece of claptrap from the auto trade in the Examiner...the reason for the change in reg for 2013 is not superstition but to 'even out' demand for new cars in the new year.
Somehow they chose 2013 to do this.
