No they weren't - too eccentrically British to be popular internationally. They did make one attempt to appeal to the American market when casting Phil Silvers (who had been successful as Sgt Bilko in the TV series) in "Carry On Follow That Camel". But that was in 1967 whereas the Bilko series had finished in 1960 so his poularity in the USA had long lapsed by then. And he didn't get on with the Carry On regulars (especially Kenneth Williams) so the experiment was never repeated.

That's a surprise, especially given the popularity of Benny Hill in the US.

I only discovered recently that Jane Leeves (aka Daphne Moon) started off on Benny Hill

Is that a Charles Hawtrey biography? Wasn't he crazy?

    Weren't they all?

My favourite Charles Hawtrey story was when his house in Deal (which Kenneth Williams described as "like a lodging house which all the boarders had suddenly deserted with a revolting smell of rising damp and cat's fish") caught fire from a discarded cigarette while he was upstairs in bed with a rent boy. He ran into the garden naked to raise the alarm and then climbed to the top storey of the smouldering property so that he could be carried down, naked, by a fireman.

I don't mind the repeats so much as I only really started watching around September or October of last year, so they're still usually new to me.

Once the repeats hit February and March of 2013 then I'll have new repeats but until then this news makes me sad

Thanks for letting us know. They seem to just jump back and forward with little logic. It messes me up because I record Pointless to watch later, and suddenly I'll find they've skipped to a new random earlier season, so I miss it. Even if I've seen them before, I still like to have my daily/weekly fix (I almost never remember the earlier shows unless the contestants are particularly memorable; just me probably)

Over the past 6 months whenever they have shown repeats they have always been for 3 weeks at a time.

Starting Mon Sept 2 they had new episodes for 5 weeks

Starting Mon Oct 7 they had repeats for 3 weeks.

Starting Mon Oct 28 they had new episodes for 5 weeks.

Starting Mon Dec 2 they had repeats for 3 weeks.

    2 weeks break for Christmas

Starting Mon Jan 6 they had new episodes for 4 weeks.

Starting Mon Feb 3 they had repeats for 3 weeks.

Starting Mon Feb 24 they had new episodes for 6 weeks.

On a positive note last Thursday Richard tweeted
Filming 17 shows this week. I think that might be a new record.

For my first post on this thread in four months, I'm going to say that this repeat run makes me very happy. :D

Why? Well, like most repeat runs, this one is picking up where the last one left off - which was the end of series 6 and the start of series 7.

Which means that we'll be seeing a certain contestant named Emma... :D:D:D;););)
For me, Paul and Emma from last September are a prime example. Not only were they 40-somethings with good personalities, but Emma... well, let's just say I wouldn't hesitate to get into bed with her if she hadn't already been taken by Paul.

Worth pointing out that when I made that post last June, it was just the 299th on this thread. Ten months later, we're very close to the 10,000-post limit and the creation of "Pointless is the best entertainment show out there - Part 2"...   :D:D;)

As Chris Tarrant said on a certain other quiz, "Well done, everybody." :D;)

    Spoiler alert there.

No doubt there will be plenty of BOOMS awarded here for that repeat. :D
