Neutral? Dev went down to the German embassy to give his condolences when Hitler died. Useless and misguided would be the kindest words, looking at the big picture.

So you think Ireland was sympathetic to the Axis powers?

An interesting but flawed view of history you have there I think.

You don't think the government really spent all that money on evoting machines and decentralisation do you ? It was just done to create a slush fund for you know who.

Snap, I actually asked this question before. The consensus was there was no such thing and I am a massive walter mitty who should lay off watching spooks for a while. correct on both counts.

G2 is not in any way a secret service nor can it do most of what some here who have posted thinks FFS its a military intelligence branch ofthe Irish Army.

As was correctly stated the GARDAI take up the role of the secret service and the division iscallled C3 or crime and security for its full title.
Based out of the Phoenix park the handle intelligence along with subversives and threats to the state backed up by the sdu and nsu.
They also give codenames for operations and handle informers and slush funds for said informers. they would have acollation service wthin that would know everything about you.
Believe it or not they are very very good at what they do.

    It's a fluffy catch all.

Not G2 (military int) or ARW, not Garda Intelligence, not Diplomatic Corps though they all might have roles as and when needed. Not run out of any of the Gov Depts which are responsible for the already mentioned. The rest is a sekrit.

Selection is through the PDF which isn't easy.

Due to cutbacks, they've had to eliminate the Service, and just keep the Secret. Mammie O'Rourke keeps it in her apron. They were officially known as the "Special Police Assignment Service", but someone eventually noticed what that spelt so they changed it double quick to the "General Investigative Intelligence and Technical Service".

So, SPAS and GIITS. Did someone mess up making their witty abbreviation?

    :p

The Rangers/SAS are the hammer. The Secret Service the OP mentions, I assume, is the MI5, or the US equivalent, the CIA, are the arm.

As regards Ireland having one, I don't think so.

Garda Intelligence Bureau would be the equivalent of Scotland Yard, the smart coppers.

CIA/MI5 equivalent would be? Not this G2. That's Army Intelligence. The smart soldiers.

    Hmmm.

I hope my intoxicated ramblings make sense in the morning.

Just for the "oh yeah" factor, my wifes friends daughter is married to a lad who is in it.:) He gets to carry a gun, wear civvies and hide in a Nissan Primera watching scummers at funny hours of the day and night. Lucky sod. Part of the Gardai, btw. I'm surrounded by them - at family get togethers I win the "I've a dull job" award, and I don't, by any reasonable standards. Bit hard to compete with "well, last week we were in the US practising rapelling from a chopper over water" with "we repaired a big concrete slab"!!

Special Detective Unit Red Section back in the 70's when the Russians used Dublin as a British back door and the Troubles were trouble.

I hope the Irish secret service is a bunch of lads that go to embassy functions (others obv.), get locked, learn stuff, and can't remember it the next day.

Judging by the actions of the US and UK, wouldn't surprise me if they're at work with our telecoms companies, helping to tap the data centers of the online multinationals, and probably (while they're at it) the rest of us too.

Previous governments here have been known for corrupt wiretapping, so I don't see any reason why it wouldn't still be going on.

Remember when Mossad used stolen Irish passports for operatives to commit a murder in a Dubai hotel. The US reputedly told Ireland to drop it and shut their squawking beaks like good little chaps.

Who did they liaise with I wonder when conveying this message.

there is, and always has been since 1918
its called g2 - Micheal Collins was its first director

read a book by Maurice Walsh - in defense of Ireland - Irish military intelligence 1918 -45 , very interesting read

at this present moment - Irish military intelligence has people who can speak fluent Arabic, monitoring " watched individuals " phone calls , texts and emails , they also have the ability to monitor Skype and other social media

along with having the ability of the un manned drones they purchased from Israel to monitor - do NOT under estimate the resources of G2

a real good ploy is to appear farcical and stupid and ill equipped
works wonders for the boys of G2

    I have said enough :D

You seem to have a lot of (what I assume is) accurate information Jarvis!
