True, but it shouldn't matter that much when driving on N-roads. In city - yes, when you constantly accelerating or braking, but not so much on a long journey.

Of course it matters. More weight still needs more energy to accelerate. Climb hills, inclines etc.

I had on 02 Punto Sporting back in 02, it only had 80 hp but it was pretty nippy, I regularly got 50+ mpg out of it.

It was light and a fair reason as to why it was good on fuel and nippy. I was really impressed with that engine and gearbox. Shame Fiat Ireland don't offer all the engine options in their cars, they make great engines !

Sure, the weight is one thing...
But it is still unclear why the new hyper technology with every next generation x% improved, lower CO2 emissions, more gears, etc. cannot help to even come close with fuel consumption to cars that were designed over 20 years ago, when only some cars were equipped with catalytic converters.

A couple of screen grabs from an APP I downloaded for fuel consumption etc.

    MPG:

    l/100kms:

    And all the average's:

Weight is more of a factor than you think, Cars are also more powerful, generally. Meaning more fuel consumption needed to over come the weight gain.

However too little power can have a negative effect because you generally have to drive the car harder, keeping the engine out of it's efficiency zone.

The Internal combustion engine has reached the peak of it's design, it simply can not offer better fuel consumption without serious weight reduction or electric intervention.

Carbon fibre alone could see MPG figures climb significantly and experts have said it need not be more expensive than current materials.

BMW's I3 electric car due for release this year will use carbon fibre and help offset the weight of the battery.

If Nissan used it in the leaf could see a fair bit more range.

around 200 miles for 40 euro petrol. That good or bad? Includes motor way driving. Driving a 1.2 ltr Punto.

I'm 215~220 for 40~45 in peak urban commuting, in 13yr old 16v 999cc. While I'm good at staying at a constant speed and not braking much. I'm a bit too heavy with the right foot making progress in heavy city traffic.

I'm averaging 28MPG in my Volvo C70. I just pulled the trigger on a Skoda Superb 170hp 2.0 TDI so expecting mid 40's & more ooomph once I switch over :)

Did a nice long run to Mayo and back last Wednesday, 525km averaged 17.6 mpg. About 2/3rds motorway. Not what many would consider good fuel economy.

Hyundai i30, 1.6 diesel, mostly short journeys on poor roads, not getting into 6th gear very often.

5.5 L/100 km (51 MPG) according to computer.

Haven’t driven it for long enough yet to do my own calculations. New, so I expect more MPG after first few thousand miles.

    06 Landcruiser D4D Auto - I've averaged 26.34MPG over the last 16k kms.

'97 Dodge Dakota 5.2L V8 Magnum 4X4 - about 11mpg if I'm lucky. That's US mpg so about 13 mpg in old money.

Drove a Smart for years, capable of 60 mpg, but just used to floor it everywhere and get about 44 mpg.

Getting 500k from the tank on my Mk5 Gti

City driving and I only get to drive every third week so I have a heavy enough foot.

    Think it's about 10l/100k

The average on the wifes IQ at the moment is 4.9/100km and she is prone to being liberal with the speed limits so its far from bad.

Maybe all the long motorway trips down to our place are artificially boosting the long term average :p

I'm averaging 18mpg for the last while, lots of urban spins in traffic and only small blasts on the dual carraigeways, would only see 23 ish mpg the other way round anyway :)
