Same for me growing up in Ballymun.

When we were older it was 'black heads' 'mini wipers' Ford Escorts/Cortina's/Granada's or GTI's ~ and if anyone knows what black heads or mini wipers mean't you were naughty, naughty boys :p

Yeah I certainly do, couldn't stand over that type of behaviour now, however, I'm glad of the education I got out of it. Did you ever have a design head, it was the ultimate blackhead, the best whacker you could have;)

I kept sketch pads. Used to sketch orchids and shop fronts, was very good at it too!

Used to rob an orchard in Naas as a kid when I was visiting cousins. Well, a fsck off garden with apple trees more than a real orchard, still though.

    Or something.

Ah come on, FFS it was a popular past time for most kids when I was growinf up and I'm only in my forties, it is not that far back. I grew up in Ballyer so it wasn't down the country either.

As I grew older we used to rob cider from Bulmers which was only down the road, King's had a factory near us too rob the crips from there.

Yes we ate the apples, but more fun was the thrill of being chased/caught.

And we'd always have someone keeping sketch in school.

Same here but from a factory in Munster. They were missions in which somebody always had to keep sketch..Especially at the railing into the orchard.

Anything we ever got was sort of crap, Babycham, Ritz , All gone off too. They would be stacked in crates waiting to be removed and dumped.
You didn't rob orchards for the fruit. Jeeze. You robbed them for the chase :D

But not in your new shoes. Never in your new shoes.

Guess I had a pretty sheltered childhood :o

Used to rob sweets from the shops and the likes... Doesn't cut it round these parts though.

Ugh, now I've to admit to the internet I was wrong. I hate you all.

Robbed apples always tasted better than legit apples.

    Good times.

What kid wants to eat fruit?

    I'm calling bullshít on this.

Kids back in the day aren't like kids today, i for one loved plums. There was a garden which had plums and apples trees.

Yep, we'd shout Sketch, even if somebody wasnt actually on sketch at the time.
Normally the full phrase shouted was "Sketch, the gotchie", but I dont know if that was a north dublin thing or not.

We wouldnt even be robbing orchards, just playing on the lake swing near the old school that the gotchie guarded with his pack of hell hounds.
gotchie, have'nt heared that in a long time.

any 10 or 12 year old with taste buds.
Same for me growing up in Ballymun.

We had Hedigan's orchid at Santry Cross, right at the edge of Santry woods and we'd be chased into the woods by the families dogs and it felt like we'd hid there all day.

Then there was Premier Dairies in Finglas where we'd rob ice cream, but since it was nearly always gang warfare between Ballymun and Finglas we took our lives into our hands when we ventured that far.

If you were really brave you'd go to Coolock or Finglas to rob the travellers horses but if you were caught you'd be battered to within an inch of your life.

Black heads and mini wipers, they were the days of the gl's also days of a miss spent youth, but good days.:)

The orchard owner, a farmer, would not let us have his apples but he would happily let them fall to the ground and rot. So one day, when he was at mass, we robbed a load of apples, took one bite out of each and left them all lined up on his wall. He wasn't happy.

I blame the parents. My cousins were over the weekend with their young kids. Up and down like rockets the moment one of the tykes went around a corner, never mind went to head into the fields behind my house. Makes me sound like an aul fella but I'm in my twenties! Used to be kicked out of the house and told to be back for lunch at 1 so Mam could clean the house or whatever and then out again until 6 for tea.
These kids though, eldest is 8 and I'd say she's never spent a moment of her life where one or other of the parents knew exactly where she is. :(

I always kept my sketches. No one else wanted my artwork.

Kept sketch a few times getting into certain feilds or old neighbours gardens to get balls. Asking some one for a sketch pad of the did'nt notice a teacher coming their way was also very common.

Still hear it the odd time when out in clubs when a group of lads have formed to have one of there funny smelling rolled cigarettes ;) theres always one person keeping sketch.

It all sounds like a 1950's comic strip to me.

I'd have preffered whipping sweets/chocs to be honest.

You don't know what you're missing. Nothing like the thrill of petty larceny to put a glow in young eyes. :D

I think OP grew up in The Beano or something. Robbing orchards? Did Mr Wilson ever catch yourself and Gnasher?

I thought everyone robbed orchards when they were kids? No?
We used to rob one every couple of weeks in the summer. Every bit as meticulously planned and executed as if it was a cash in transit job! Happy days!:D
