    A mod's coming - sketch!

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,194 ✭✭✭Archeron

Yep, we'd shout Sketch, even if somebody wasnt actually on sketch at the time.
Normally the full phrase shouted was "Sketch, the gotchie", but I dont know if that was a north dublin thing or not.

We wouldnt even be robbing orchards, just playing on the lake swing near the old school that the gotchie guarded with his pack of hell hounds.

Does "to keep sketch" mean "to act as a lookout?" I think I've deciphered that from the OP.

    Orchard:
    1. An area of land devoted to the cultivation of fruit or nut trees.
    2. The trees cultivated in such an area.

    Did you never see one?

Rob them to get fruit. Its not that confusing really.

I think OP grew up in The Beano or something. Robbing orchards? Did Mr Wilson ever catch yourself and Gnasher?

Used to rob an orchard in Naas as a kid when I was visiting cousins. Well, a fsck off garden with apple trees more than a real orchard, still though.

They sold them to Bill Cullen and cooked meth with the proceeds.

Ah come on, FFS it was a popular past time for most kids when I was growinf up and I'm only in my forties, it is not that far back. I grew up in Ballyer so it wasn't down the country either.

As I grew older we used to rob cider from Bulmers which was only down the road, King's had a factory near us too rob the crips from there.

Yes we ate the apples, but more fun was the thrill of being chased/caught.

    I robbed them too.

And we'd always have someone keeping sketch in school.

Same for me growing up in Ballymun.

We had Hedigan's orchid at Santry Cross, right at the edge of Santry woods and we'd be chased into the woods by the families dogs and it felt like we'd hid there all day.

Then there was Premier Dairies in Finglas where we'd rob ice cream, but since it was nearly always gang warfare between Ballymun and Finglas we took our lives into our hands when we ventured that far.

If you were really brave you'd go to Coolock or Finglas to rob the travellers horses but if you were caught you'd be battered to within an inch of your life.

When we were older it was 'black heads' 'mini wipers' Ford Escorts/Cortina's/Granada's or GTI's ~ and if anyone knows what black heads or mini wipers mean't you were naughty, naughty boys :p

Same here but from a factory in Munster. They were missions in which somebody always had to keep sketch..Especially at the railing into the orchard.

Anything we ever got was sort of crap, Babycham, Ritz , All gone off too. They would be stacked in crates waiting to be removed and dumped.

You'd hear sketch a lot around school when a teacher was approaching some sort of messing.
School was a funny old place, a bit like what I imagine prison to be like; lots of shouting and a general air of distaste towards authority. Keep your head down and do your time.
