Funny, that. My Garmin measured it short today yet it measured it at exactly 5k a few weeks ago and it's the same course every week!!
Just goes to show you cannot trust the garmin, there was probably a lot of satellite interference today with the clouds and the tree cover....

Nice to meet you. You really flew out of the blocks today. Myself and Runningking only passed you after about half a mile. At least you got your 6:xx mile in :D

Thanks, yeah way too fast. You live and learn. If I'd added 30-45 seconds onto first mile pace I probably could have taken 60-90 secs off the final time....he says after the fact! The beauty of these though is that they are on every week so you have a cahance to correct your mistakes quickly.

Won't be there next week though as I'm lined up for Fat Turkey Run in Sutton/Howth next Saturday. Up to summit and back down again (10K). No PBs there for sure but will be a good way of burning up some of those calories from Christmas. Apparently the average person consumes about 6500 calories on Christmas day alone:eek:

Nice meeting you today, good running on a tough mucky course. You were right about the hill on the 3rd lap!
My garmin measured 3:09 today, but the clouds/trees made reading pace difficult as it showed a few 7:xx when I was going faster than that. makes it important to learn your packing for different distances and less reliant on the watch.

Nice meeting you, no doubt we'll meet there again.

With the week that's in it decided to turn last week into an 8 day week and do my long run today. Was awake a lot of the night last night coughing so wasnt sure how I'd feel on this run but wasn't too bad in end.

Ran up to Howth Summit from Sutton side and over other side into village and back home. For those non-Dubliners reading here this is quite a hilly route so it was a good work out. Was sweating profusely today, even more than usual, probably getting rid of some of the toxins recently ingested on various nights out.

Woke up on Christmas morning with really bad back pain. Could barely walk never mind run. Still bad today so there'll be no running today either:mad:

I've had this before , lower back pain, but usually goes after few days. Hopefully I'll be ok for 10k on Saturday.

Back problem hadn't totally gone away but I do hate missing any race I've entered. It wasn't 100% but I reckoned I could run with it so a dose of deep heat and one or two pain killers got me to start line. Not something I'd recommend but I tend to do things like this , the mind just won't listen to the body sometimes.

Anyway, race was to start at 1130am so picked up my two friends who were running it with me and headed down to Rugby Club in Sutton for registration, safety briefing and last minute toilet stop. We had to walk/jog from there about 1/2mile to start. It was chip timing, a wrist worn one.(never seen these before). Interestingly no chip mat at start, only at finish so I suspect everyone got same start time?

This is a challenging course rising from Sutton village up to Howth Summit and back down again. I've run the road a few times in training so knew what to expect . I wasn't aiming to push myself to max but do just enough to get through race and test myself just a little bit, considering back injury and the "Rich" diet over last few days!

Thought I paced the incline quite well, it was hard going but felt like I had a decent bit left in the legs to take advantage of the way back down the hill. Got a stitch on way back down which didn't help but a quick adjustment of breathing seemed to sort that out. Was never going to get a PB on this course but was hoping for something in or around 50 mins. In the end I crossed the line in approx 51 mins ( I say approx because I forgot to stop my Garmin which read 51:38 when i got round to it) No official result yet so i'll update here when I get that. My garmin had it at 6.33mi too . And (Ososlo will enjoy this little fact)...I wretched a bit at end which shows I was definitely pushing myself on the home stretch to finish line.

All in all was happy to get out and enjoyed the hilly test that it was. Hopefully the dodgy back..which didn't affect me in the race as it happens...will clear up and I can get back now to some serious running and put the overindulgences of Christmas behind me.

Official results put me at 50:51. A long way off my pb of 47:09 but not exactly a flat course! All things considered. A decent workout. Heading out now for slow run afyer spending the afternoon in cinema watching The Hobbit with kids. Awful weather, sore back, pain in calf from yesterday but f**k it. I just weighed myself and im up 5lbs since before Christmas!

Weather wasn't that bad in end just a bit windy.Ran to feel mostly rather than looking at pace on the watch too much. It felt good and was an easier run than yesterdays hillfest. Rest day tomorrow and then the fun starts for 2013:)

Family committments prevented me from getting out yesterday so today was my first run of the year. Preparation for my big goal for the year, a sub 4 hour DCM2013 begins today in earnest!

Have enrolled for the 1000mile challenge too to keep me in check.

Monthly Weigh-in this morning put me at 15 st`12lbs---yikes!:eek: thats 6lbs up on my pre-Christmas weight. Am going to set myself a target weight of 14 st 10lbs....not because its my optimum weight or anything but I think it is achievable but not easily achievable (for me) so it is something to aim for. I can't remember the last time I weighed 14st anything.

Back still not great so some deep heat applied before heading out today.Doesn't seen to bother me that much when I'm actually running though.
Was aiming for a tempo run tonight and was definitely going faster than usual. How fast is hard to tell because my damn garmin died in the middle of the run, well at 4.2mi of 6.9mi run to be exact. So figures below are derided from guestimate of finishing time. Distance is accurate though becaus eI've run this route before lots of times.

6.90mi; 55:00ish( may have been slightly less than this but not sure)

    Avg Pace : 8:00
    Avg HR : 141 -(first 4.2 miles)
    Max HR : 152 - (first 4.2 miles)

    WTD : 13.21m
    YTD : 13.21m

    Short tempo run...

    3.77miles; 30:03mins

    Avg Pace : 7:59
    Avg HR : 150
    Max HR : 163

    WTD : 16.98m
    YTD : 16.98m

Felt good on this run, hardly checked watch ,ran to feel as much as possible, pushing it when I felt good, holding back when I needed to get breathing back in check. Nothing extraordinary to report except a slightly tight right calf.
Hoping to go to park run in morning but having some car trouble so may need to jump start it to get back home!:)

Did park Run this morning. Was pondering not doing it as I'm having trouble with my car but it started first time this morning sothought I'd gamble on going out and sure if it didn't start I'd get someone to help me jump start it..but as it turned out this was to be the least of my troubles.

Met RunningKing before the race and we were having a chat..as you do ...about this and that and the subject of Meno's hamstring injury came up. We discussed how we had suffered similar injuries in the past in our footballing days. Little did I realise that I would be struck down mid race with a hamstring issue. This is what happened after about two miles. I was going well, didnt start out too fast like last time and was saving some energy for a quick last mile with a PB in mind. I was on course for the PB when my hamstring went...how depressing:(. I stopped for about 30 seconds and stretched it out before resuming running but after 50m or so I knew my race was up for the day. There was no way I was walking back so kept going but conscious that I didnt want to do any more serious damage so basically jogged it home. My HR monitor kept slipping down during race which was a further annoyance so don't know if stats on that accurate either.Max HR looks too high to me.

This is so annoying because now it looks like I'll need to rest up to allow this to heal. I wonder though was this injury fated. Recent lower back pain, weakness in glutes as identified by my sports masseuse, maybe it is all linked?

Really pi55ed off now as a new PB(currently 22:47) looked definitely on the cards today before the injury hit.

One bright note was that the Boards T-shirt did its magic again today and met npresto for first time. Sorry I didn't hang around for chat this time as I wanted to get home fast to ice up the hamstring and check if my car would start!

anyway the stats for what its worth....

    3.05miles; 24:14 (garmin time)

    Splits:7:07,7:50,8:52,(7:50)

    Avg Pace : 7:56
    Avg HR : 159
    Max HR : 198

    YTD : 20.03m

Sorry to hear about that RR.

I'm just coming back from a hamstring injury and really regret not initially doing all that I could to recover from it. Get your physio to show you some stretches and you'll come back with even more motivation to break that 5km time.

Cheers MM. I have a few stretches from previous visits that I will defo work on for next week or so. In meantime will rest for next few days at least before venturing out again.

Thanks Blockic..appreciate that. Will take it easy alright. Don't want this to be a recurring one later in year.

Still no Chocolate yet though. I'd better maintain that abstinence while I'm not running or I could be in trouble!

Bad luck today, thought something was up when I didn't see you coming in sooner. Can't believe the hamstring went after us discussing it.
Also can't believe you ran on!

Take it handy for the coming few days, it's a blow, but don't do anything too extreme!

See you back there in a couple of weeks..........

Was just writing on my log that hadn't seen any boardsies atall, but think I might have actually seen you on the last mile in - couldn't see the front of the shirt so wasn't certain it was a boards one and I was using all my energy to get to the finish line. I really hope this doesn't cause you too many problems.
