    Hi

I have had a few missed calls in the last days from the number 00. It's a strange number and I answered the call today but straight away I was on hold with music playing. Fearing that it was a scam, I hung up straight away. I'm on meteor.

Has anyone else had this call or do they have any more information on who is calling me?

    Many thanks!

What are the third, fourth and fifth numbers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 311 ✭✭robjones1981

I missed two calls yesterday from this 00 number

I managed to answer the third one last night - and immediately I got hold music, snow patrol, the same as usual if you call Meteor

Was then told to hold for an available operator

    To be honest its annoying!

I still get calls from this 00 number. I have only ever answered once. Today I had a missed call and a voice mail message from the number. When I checked the voice mail, there was a man with an English accent saying hello and sounding a confused. It seemed as though he hadn't intended to call me.

Can I ask what network others that ha e experienced this are on? As mentioned, I'm on meteor.

What are the third, fourth and fifth numbers?

There are only two digits, I know that seems strange but the numbers shows as 00

I am on meteor and have also had missed calls from 00.

Seems that meteor is the common factor. Has anyone noticed any charges on their bill or has anyone spoken to meteor about the issue?

Sounds like the scam regarding the Windows call center .

You should put the question to the guys in the 'Talk to Meteor' forum right here and see what info they can provide, if anything :)

i had the same, its meteor calling, whatever way it works, their system calls your number then transfers you to the next available agent, so the agent isn't actually calling you, its their system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,158 ✭✭✭kirving

It's Meteor alright, I rang back and asked them and they confirmed it was. Offering me an upgrade because I'm out of contract.

Their system should really be set up so 'Meteor' comes up on the the display rather than '00'.

I was a bit put off by the guy asking for my PIN too, anyone could send WebTexts off my accout if they had that - so I hung up.

It's bad form for a company to ring you and look for the PIN.

I've had this out with meteor time and again, ringing from withheld numbers etc and then expecting people to confirm their details so they can peddle stuff to them.

I've had a few calls from 00 over the last few days which I'm duly ignoring. I've got my contact preference with meteor set to email for ages but they seem to ignore that all the time in their drive to sell crap.

Im guessing the people who were called were all on Bill pay?
    so im safe :D

Thanks. That's good to know! It's strange that it's shows that the number. Definitely something that they should correct!

Just got the call today & found this thread.

It rang & displayed as 00 so I killed the call.
Got a voicemail then & naturally listened to it.
Instead of a voicemail I got put through to a woman with an English accent who said "Hello Jim"*
I immediately hung up think it was one of those $$$$ per minute numbers.

    *not my real name

Im PAYG and i got this last week but once i answered i was instantly redirected (noise like im ringing) and then a lady with an idiot accent answered and said she wanted to talk to me about my network provider.

It's just a scam to keep you on the line at crazy peak rates tbh

It's not. It's Metoer calling about upgrading your phone, or about what you think of ther service.

If you answer and it rings, you're not the one who called the number, so it's not you who'll be charged. Were you charged for the call?

I think it's a bit stupid myself, since Meteor would have the ability to make thier name come up on a phone that they're ringing. Maybe the work is contracted out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,810 ✭✭✭skerry

Had this just now too. Rang from '00' and when I answered all I heard was a dial tone so I just hung up. If it is Meteor then I can't imagine their getting too much response to these calls as they look v. dodgey.

I added 00 to my reject list, got one call yesterday and one today, missed them both.

just to clarify i was onto Meteor today after receiving this 00 call again and i was given an apology from customer service guy who agreed their system of calling people and putting them on hold till a sales rep deals with you is a joke.

he said they have decided to axe this process shortly....sooner the better me thinks. i would continue to hang up on them and advise anyone else to do the same.....perhaps then they will get the message.

I'm Pay as You Go and got this call the other day. When I answered it automatically made redirect noises and a woman with a foreign accent said "Hello my name is _____ and I'm calling from Meteor....your network provider"

She kinda hesitated when she said Meteor and I thought the way she specified what Meteor is was odd so I just hung up. All seemed very dodgy. I wasn't going to take any chances especially since I know this happened in the past year http://www.rte.ie/news/2012/0210/eircom.html

It's an automated dialler. It calls a list of numbers just in time to connect you to an available agent. At least that's the theory. I got a call from them earlier today, showed up as 00. Answered and after 1, maybe 1.5 seconds, I was speaking with an agent. I'm coming to the end of my billpay contract, so he was offering me a phone upgrade or €25 off my bill. Did ask for my PIN, which I refused, but after I provided some other details, he was able to read my PIN to me, which verified his access.

I suppose that with the other details he could probably blag his way into Meteor and get my PIN if he wanted to. Not sure how else he could verify my identity though.

got three in the last two days - I am not answering as I am not near end of contract and do not want to but any extra stuff off them. 00 looks very dodgey

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2 DarkPheonix

I got one this morning and I answered it and it was as if I was calling someone. This happened to me about a year ago and I let it ring out and some girl answered going mad at me because I kept on calling her!! It was really confusing. Is it definitely Meteor doing this? Very strange and useless marketing idea.

Same here - call from "00" - meteor apparently. Asking if I'm happy with the service. I complained to them a couple of years ago about poor phone coverage in our area and told him this is still the case. He asked for my pin, I said I don't know for sure who you are so won't give it. Ironic they ask you for proof of identity when calling from a number "00". I told him I was busy, and irony of ironies got cut off because of poor coverage here. I rest my case.

This number just called me a few mins ago about 9pm. Didn't answer because it seemed to be an odd number and funny time of night for it. Also im meteor pay as you go

I got a call around 18.45. I wrote to someone from meteor live chat and they said its a scam and traced to the US and they ask for your details. My boyfriend got a call from the same number twenty mins before me and they offered him discounts on his current prepay plan. And he didn't give any details to them. He also recieved a confirmation text of his new plan...

So I don't know what to believe. I'm going to write to meteor on twitter and see what they say..... i want discounts! If its not a scam of course:P

If it's not a scam it still sounds like Spam.

If it's something important they want they better send an email, I won't be answering calls.

This was on Rte this morning

Communications Regulator is warning consumers to be careful about returning apparent missed calls on their mobile phones.
The warning comes in the wake of a phone scam which emerged over the weekend that targeted thousands of Irish mobile phone users.
They received missed calls which appeared to be from an 086 number - but when they returned the call, they were connected to a premium rate service that appears to be based in Slovenia.
It appears that only 087 numbers were targeted.
There have been reports that the number redirects to a premium sex line.
Anyone who believes they have fallen victim is advised to contact their phone provider to see what, if any, charges they have incurred.
Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Retail and Consumer Services Director at ComReg Barbara Delaney said phoning the number could be costly.
"The reason it's a missed call is because it's not long enough to answer, so it's purposely missed.
"It appears on your phone with the missed number beginning with +386 so people think it's an Irish number and are then inclined to call it back... that's where the charge would apply," she said.
"We would urge people to be vigilant in this respect for two reasons.
"Firstly because you may get it at a time when you might not be expecting a call and secondly because of the digits it commences with you may be caught off guard and think it is an Irish mobile number.
"So we would urge consumers not to call back numbers that they don't know where it came from."

The 00 should be changed so that 'Meteor' comes up instead to settle the confusion I think..

Meteor twitter folk say the 00 number is safe

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,797 ✭✭✭KyussBishop

Getting this today myself; I'm fed up with Meteor, they spam marketing texts and totally ignore 'opt-outs' (and somehow the network bugs, sending the same message to my phone 20+ times throughout the entire day), been getting the Slovenian calls, and now this crap from Meteor themselves, on a '00' phone number which looks even more suspicious than getting calls from the Slovenian one.

I don't know what the logic is meant to be behind all this; they must be desperately looking for money through spamming marketing messages/calls (with ComReg only giving them 'cost of doing business' fines), despite the fact that they are likely going to hemorrhage customers as a result of that; they'd hardly want to deliberately push away customers so I can't think of why else they'd be doing this.

Going to switch to O2 shortly in any case.

Yes. There's a few threads on the meteor forums on it. They want to "confirm your name and PIN" for data protection purposes. Meteor clearly say they won't do that. I've had a few of those calls as well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,288 ✭✭✭slinky2000

Of course what did I do straight away, Google it and ended up here!

I ended up being costed credit for answering this number, Grrr!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

my wife and i have both had 2 calls today from this number (meteor billpay, but 086 no. for us both as we moved from 02 a few years ago).

so now we (apparently) have meteor saying it's legit and others (inc. apparently meteor now) saying it's not.

if it's dodgy, then surely meteor can block it permanently and if it's not, then surely they need to contact their sales/marketing dept. or whatever and tell them to stop acting like a bunch of fcukwits and making people think it IS a scam.
