Hmm at least the Snes didnt need poxy addons

And who please remind me is still making hardware?

    And great games

And finally and most important Sega never had Boulder Dash on any of its consoles

And for that Sega deserved to go bust

The Megadrive does not need a single add on. The only reason to have those add ons is for collectability and play the handful of good games on each console. I'd rather have add ons with more games to collect than no add ons at all.

Sure the Snes would have had an add on if the deal didn't fall through with Sony :p
    Sparks43 wrote: »

What has that got to do with anything? Neither the Snes or the Megadrive are made anymore.
    Sparks43 wrote: »

Well, the only console out of the above which has had quite a few games released in the last few years is the Megadrive. Only one I can think of for the Snes is Nightmare Busters (which isnt out yet)

Thank **** for that! Keep that trash for other systems :p

In conclusion, the Megadrive is the best, the Snes stinks and my dad would beat up your dad in a fight.

Well the SNES did have addons, a few in fact.
But just because the were included on the cart pcb's a lot of people don't seem to think of them as such.

That must be why the best genesis games don't even get near the third tier of top snes titles

Yep, because we all know, faster processor = worse games.

    :confused::confused::confused:

You my good man, are talking through your arse. Examples or your comment is automatically voided.

Actually, you know what, I'll give you examples.

Say, there are 10 games per 'tier'. So that would mean we're looking for a game from the snes top games, 21-30.

I'll take Retro-Sanctuary for example and give you a Megadrive game in each genre which is better.

30 - Hagane: The Final Conflict Snes - The Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi 3 are superior.

29 - Populous. I dont need to say anything here.

28 - Contra III: The Alien Wars - This is one of those forever debatable ones, but Contra Hard Corps on the Megadrive is a far better game (and thankfully it's not fun of Michael Bay type gratuitous mode 7 effects)

27 - Axelay. The Megadrive, being the 'shmup console' has about a bazillion games better than this. I won't bore you by listing them all.

26 - Spindizzy Worlds - just. just no.

    25 - Actraiser - Herzog Zwei

24 - Mortal Kombat 2. Both crap ports. Moving on.

23 - Super Castlevania IV. Whoever made this list was an idiot. This should be in the Snes top 10. Castlevania: Bloodlines gives it a very good run for it's money on the MD.

22 - R-Type III: The Third Lightning - ah, another slow, treakle like Snes shmup bettered by that above bazillion Megadrive ones.

21 - Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals - Phantasy Star IV.

James Rolfes comparison of the specs is kind of BS though. Figures don't matter at all and stuff like MHz aren't an indicator of performance, stuff like ARM chips with low clock speeds will totally out perform many chips with much higher clock speeds.

A lot of those specs true but totally impractical in practice. The SNES has more sprites on screen but in practice with only a few on screen it's slowdown city. The high res mode is used by one game that I know of and in the character select screen of SoM and Secret of Evermore. It's a much lower resolution in all other games.

I think that was the weakest part of that video series, he really didn't have a clue about the tech specs of both consoles. I happened to find the tech war between the two consoles fascinating especially how clever megadrive programmers managed to fake effects like transparencies, rotation and scaling out of the megadrive when it really shouldn't have been able to do it.

Again to reiterate, both are amazing machines.

Phantasy Star 4 is better than Chrono Trigger!

Remember those handheld driving games where there was a window you looked into with a road which scrolled?

The road was on rotating drum. The drum went around and around, creating the illusion that the ground was moving towards you.

Axelay is like the mode 7 version of that :P

Nothing wrong with any of the above either, just makes for excellent reading. Love it! :D

I deleted my post yet you still quoted it, thats bang out of order

    Anyway I`ll bite

Games like Castlevania 4, donkey kong country 3, megaman x2 x3 and 7, super evermore, havest moon, super aleste, f-zero, starfox, sunset riders, super punch out, super turrican etc would it make into my own personal list of around the 30-20 games on the snes mark, these are only the games I own so you could throw in alot more rpgs into that list like lufia 1 and 2 and more rarer titles

The ones quoted in the article you mentioned I own hagane and some others from there

Imo yes those games are better than genesis games. Obviously the genesis does have some gems but for some reason they never show on the best games of all time lists while the lists are crowded with snes titles

If you want my top 20 games I`ll glady answer it

Every thread being turned into a how great the genesis is thing is seriously starting to grind my nuts on this forum

    But ask yourselves this

If and when you die and are left in heaven/hell with one game to play for all eternity what would it be?

If someone wants to stand on a street corner, in nothing but a pair of socks and a sandwich board, declaring the glory of the Megadrive, we let them.
Generally speaking there is a similarly attired Snes fan around the next corner.

You have to travel someways before meeting an adherent to the cult of the CDi however, and most people don't believe they exist, and yet, somehow, we have one here....
Not sure if we here in A&R should take it as a complement or hide our faces in shame...

Yeah, I'd report myself to myself but I'd only ban myself... you can go blind from banhammering yourself too much!

Lets all just take a deep breath... in....... out..... and get back to what this forum is really all about, the love of all things Arcade and Retro and the desire to undermine Retr0gamers opinion at every opportunity!

I mean, if he hasn't yet shagged off to Jamma+ after all we've said to him!

And, regarding the Megadrive, you'd hardly expect the mod of the Sega forum to root for the Snes, would you?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 33,733 ✭✭✭✭Myrddin

The 16bit wars had no victor, the competition on both sides was simply too good. It's the gaming equivalent of MAD {Mutually Assured Destruction}. Lets not fight that we have two of the best consoles ever made & fight over which is better, lets simply play & enjoy the fact that we have them. They're both as good as each other in different ways, & we're damned lucky. When you compare the diversity we had back then to that of today? Yeah, exactly.

Aye. Could it be argued the PCE was the more impressive machine when you look at the quality of it's arcade ports?

    Remind me again - it's considered a 16-bit machine because of the 2 x 8-bit processors?

It had an 8-bit processor but it 16-bit graphics processors. 8-bits don't mean anything really, the 8-bit processor was blisteringly fast and with the fantastic video architecture taking a huge load off of the CPU it was more than a match for the Megadrive and totally outpaced the SNES for sprite pushing. Anything that wasn't related to pushing sprites however was a bit more difficult to code which was a limitation of the system. It could display way more colours than the Megadrive as well. It's never a case of MHz ratings or 'bits', it's always a lot more complicated with different strengths and weaknesses.

The PC Engine had a decent library of games and some good arcade ports but it's no where near as good as the MD and SNES library especially since you need the CD add-on to get most of the best games on the system.
