Morning gals!! I hope everyone wakes up feeling good today. My husband just delivered me up tea and toast in bed- good start to the day!! Althou I didn't feel like it Ireally think it has made me feel good!

MurdyWurdy, can't wait to hear how you get on today.

Just wanted to throw another question out there....It's the private V public question. Have any of ye decided what to go with? I have read lots about this on many different threads and boards and have yet to see one bad report from some one who went thru the public system. Can we justify forking out 3,000 euro for private consultant? If I run into difficulty during labour am I right in thinking a consultant will be called even if I go public? Sorry for all the questions. Things are a bit tight in our house at the minute and I feel I could buy my baby beautiful buggy, cot, other essentials with the money I save from going public? All opinions/stories/reports are very welcome.

Cheers girls, hope you all have a nice Saturday.

Double B good question, ill be going public simply as i dont have the money to be going private, and im going to see a specialist anyways who caters for both private and public, but i get him free as the doctor has refered me to the high risk unit ( i have a heart condition)
Ultimately i would love a home birth, a pool, a midwife. But thats all out the window. And if something did go wrong i am an hours drive to the hospital.

What extra services do u get with going private?are you guaranteed your own room?

I'm going public - we did our research and decided going private was not worth the money. From what I could tell if you go private (and my research was based on Holles Street), you're supposed to get to see the same obstretrician each time you have an appointment (public is midwives and they could be all different - you only get a consultant your firs visit ), have that same doctor at your delivery and get a private room in the hospital. However, if the doctor can't be there at the delivery then tough (happened to my aunt - her doctor got called away for an emergency c section) and if there is no private room available they'll put in a public ward and you'll have to pay anyway. Even if you have insurance you still have to pay a good bit for it. For us, we just didn't think it was worth it. If anything goes wrong it's escalated to a consultant anyway - I've only heard good things about the public system and talked to a few women who went private for their first but public afterwards. We'd rather put that money away for the baby, tbh. Each to their own though, I can see why some people would prefer to go private!

Scan was great :) So worth the money! Baby is healthy, in the right place and everything looks good so far. We good see a really strong heartbeat and the nurse said everything looks fine and as it should be, we could see the cord developing and the yolk sac which looked healthy :D Only thing is she said the baby is measuring at 7 weeks 5 days and I had counted myself as 8 weeks 5 days. I asked was that a problem (because I am fairly sure when we conceived) but she said that it's ok and not to worry about it. That the hospital will date it again when I go at the beginning of December and it can be hard to tell in early pregnancy. I was a bit upset to hear that at first, because I was worried and because I feel like it means an extra week of morning sickness but the nurse was very reassuring. So, myself and Mr Murdywurdy are very happy!

thats great news murdywurdy,it must have been great to see the heartbeat :D Ah sure not to worry was an extra week here or there ;D it will be worth it.

    That's great Murdywurdy!

I know what you mean about worrying about an extra week of sickness. I don't think I would have liked to hear that either! 11wks and 3 days according to my dating scan today and I feel sicker than ever :-( When will it stop! Feels like the longest few weeks in history lol.

Hey!! Just having a nose in!! I was in the due July 2012 thread.
Just wanted to tell you my experience Re: Scan!
I had a bleed at 8 weeks and went for a scan to see if I had lost baby. I didn't but the baby measured 2 weeks earlier than my dates(they thought I was only 6 weeks) 2 weeks later I went back and the baby was perfect size(10 weeks at time) so don't worry a bit about it-go by your dates!!

Baby Java is now a healthy 4monther!! Enjoy your journey ladies, always makes me broody coming in here!

Thanks so much - really appreciate you sharing your experience! I feel a lot better now :) I was really hoping that will happen to me because I am pretty sure of the dates. Fingers crossed - would much rather be 8w5d instead of 7w5d!!

Our early scan was totally worth it! I'm in Dublin though so no help with clinics, sorry!

I'm starting to get worried about my morning sickness. Nothing is staying down, not even water at this stage and I'm vomiting every twenty minutes or so. I even woke up during the night to be sick last night. I just want to be put out of my misery. I'm not sure there's any point going to my doctor because what can he do really? I'm might call and ask to speak to him after he does his morning rounds. I just feel so helpless :(

    Hi MurdyWurdy

I just wanted to let you know that through the public system in holles st you should see the same consultant all the time. I've had both of my boys public under Dr. Foley - who I saw on Monday mornings. I saw him for all of my appointments bar one when there was horrific snow and ice when I was pregnant on my first.

My best friend went private with dr. foley & I saw him publicly - the main difference is that he sees his private patients in his blackrock clinic and there's magazines and tea and coffee available (!) and he'll be there for the delivery of the baby (if possible) and you'll get a private room in the merrion wing.

As a public patient, the midwives will test your urine and weigh you. You then go into a little room, wait for the consultant you'll do a little scan (most times - it really really depends) and feel your tummy, ask you questions and answer yours and then that's it. Dr Foley runs the most amazing operation in there - i'd be in a 8am and out by 8.30am. He's unbelievably efficient. Then for the delivery it'll be a midwife unless there's complications (ironically I had 2 consultants at my first son's delivery) and then you go to a public ward of 6 beds - the company is actually really nice.

anyway, each consultant does a different morning - dr. foley does Mondays etc -- it's all on the website and that's how it worked. So, for this pregnancy I rang holles st and asked for a Monday appt as it's dr. Foley's clinic. If I was seeing him privately (and we do have VHI) it'd be giving him the guts of 14k for my 3 pregnancies !!! The public system works for me!!

I'd ring the GP Murdywurdy. When my sickness was very bad he checked my urine to see was I dehydrated (I wasn 't) and gave me a letter for if it got worse to go straight to hospital. He said you might need a drip if you 're dehydrated. Mind yourself. It's really horrible.

Doctor advised me to take a few days off work to rest and do my best to sip water and keep my fluids up. He said he doesn't think I'm dehydrated at the moment but I've to keep my eye out for it and get myself into him ASAP if I think I am dehyrdated so he can refer me to the hospital.

Just writing an email to my manager (he's out for the afternoon) to tell him I won't be in for the next few days. I feel so terrible about it, I know that me and the baby come first but feeling bad about work is really adding to my stress levels about it all. :(

My only girl cousin is 9 weeks pregnant, she just told me... :D

Ive no sisters and growing up we were always together. Im delighted we'll have each other.... Getting all emotional now :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 178 ✭✭DoubleB

Awh Julias Jewel thats lovely that yee will be going through this together. You can compare notes!! Your babies will be great friends!

Murdy Wurdy you poor poor thing. I am so sorry you are feeling so bad.Definitely don'y feel stressed about taking time off. A friend of mine was prescribed tablets for sickness during her preg by her GP. Ive no idea what and althou I don't like the sound of taking pills while preg she found them amazing. I had a taste of what you are going thru yesterday. Kept nothing down and then ended up coughing up blood. My health insurance is with Aviva and they have a 24 hr nurse on call. They reckon I burst a blood vessel or tore something in my throat from getting sick!!! It was awful. Felt sick today too but not as bad. Haven't gotten sick so far thankfully.

Thnks for the info re public v private everyone. I'm thinking we will prob go public and then try request a private room on check in and pay the excess which is 113 euro per nighr. Havin my own room means a lot to me!! My Dad cut me out an article about morning sickness. He was very funny telling me all the info.

  • Registered Users Posts: 438 ✭✭sunshiner

I got a letter today for an appointment in the hospital, but its rather vague, it just says to bring gp referal letter, scans and bloods etc ( though ive had no scan) Whats the likelihood that they will give me a scan when i go?I will be 10weeks then!It says nothing about drinking water or anything, its rather confusing.

Murdy wurdy - i feel for you, you poor thing. God throwing up every 20 mins...Thats just hell. I think you definitely need to take a few days off work. I've had quite bad morning sickness too but nothing nearly as bad as you. I've been finding it so hard. I can only imagine how you must be feeling. Definitely some few days in bed are needed for you id say. Here's hoping it will ease up very soon for you.
Julias jewel - oh that must be so nice for you to have your cousin pregnant at the same time as you!! I know one of my friends is trying at the moment and i was kinda hoping she might end up being pregnant with me but i don't think she is yet anyway. Her Facebook status at the wknd said she was out in the pub with her hubby and it sounded like she was drinking so i think im on my own for now at least!
Doubleb - oh my god i didn't realise you could request a private room even if you are public....god im definitely gonna try that too...i would really consider paying the extra to get a private room. The crowded ward is the one thing about going public that i really dread.

Im writing this from my phone so forgive me if ive spelt any of your names wrong, i can't go back through who said what. Hi to everyone else. Hope you are all getting through the first trimester ok. I've my 12 week scan tomorrow....im so freaking excited and nervous. I won't sleep a wink tonight id say!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,518 ✭✭✭krankykitty

I had my 12 week scan today (well, 11 week 5 days really but who's counting!)

It was amazing to see, lots of movement, like really lots, spinning around and moving arms and legs. The sonographer turned on the 3D mode so got a good view, but it was like the baby decided s/he didn't want to be papped and turned around to block the view, arms up and all!

Just had bloods taken, blood pressure check and chat with consultant otherwise..

    Hope everyone is doing good..

So glad scans went well Krankykitty and looking forward to hearing about babyonboard's- so exciting! My 12 week appointment is 3 weeks away and I feel like I'll never get there at this stage :)

Julias_Jewel - that is fantastic about your cousin. I'd love for one of my friends to be secretly pregnant too but I don't think it's going to happen!

Had a day in bed vomiting, fun for all the family! Going to take tomorrow off as well and go into work Thurs and Fri - then I'll only have two days to get through and then I can spend the weekend in bed and vomiting.

DoubleB Doc said that before you get past your first trimester there is nothing they can give me, but there are drugs you can take that are safe but presumably that's after 13 weeks? I'm not sure how comfortable I'd be taking them but if I'm very ill still then maybe needs must. Oh well, nothing I can do at the moment. I did eat a bowl of coco pops an hour ago and it hasn't come up yet so that's good, right?!

My husband brought home flowers for me to cheer me up, he feels so bad I'm going through this while he can't do anything. He's very good to me, he's a keeper! :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 178 ✭✭DoubleB

Baby on board- I'm really not one hundred percent sure about being able to request private room but I really don't see why we shouldn't be. Like we would be paying just like the ppl goin private. I rang my insurance comp and they told me I could request it when I arrived and that insurance would cover the bulk(which is over a thousand euro a night according to the guy I spoke to) and then I pay the rest which for me works out at 113 per night. Seems fair to me that we would have the same chance as private patients do of getting private room if we are going to pay for it, unless of course there is some body who needs the private room more than me!!

Krankykitty- that sounds totally amazing. I'm very excited now about my 11 week scan which is next week. Girls do any of yee know when the placenta begins to start working. I can't get a clear answer from google!! Think it varies. I've heard that can often be when morning sickness eases and you start to feel good again.

I have discovered Ambrosia creamed rice is my new friend. Makes me feel better!!

I was wondering that too because when I had my scan a few days ago the sonographer said she could see the yolk sac and where the placenta will be and I was wondering when the placenta is formed and what happens to the yolk sac? I looked it up and it seems the yolk sac is absorbed by the placenta but I'm really not sure!

Also, I'm going to try creamed rice now you've said that, haven't had that in years and milky stuff seems to be working best for me at the moment because it's filling but bland.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,518 ✭✭✭krankykitty

I don't know what the story is about the placenta and sickness.. I got her to point out the placenta today (because I'm slightly obsessed with them since I saw a photo of one. Holy crap that thing gets big!) and mine is there all right, but I am still nauseous. Threw up in town on Saturday which ruined my idea of cheering myself up with retail therapy!

I just looked up the placenta there in my "What to Expect" and it says it gets manufactured until about the 4th month. Doesn't say which week though.

MurdyWurdy, I'd agree about the bland stuff, seems easiest to digest. I normally don't really eat bread but have been eating it recently as it's easy. And a couple of table water crackers with some butter. Ironically, the stuff that actually appeals is the spicier stuff (though not when I actually try to eat it!)

Babyonboard, good luck at the scan hope all goes well!

Sunshiner, what hosp are you going to? someone else going there might be able to tell you what to expect at your visit. The sonographer explained to me that the reason they get you to fill the bladder is because the uterus is behind the bone at this stage (12 weeks) which can't be seen by the sonar and filling it pushes it up. So Im guessing if you get a scan at 10 weeks you'll need to drink the water..

Julias Jewel, delighted you have a partner in crime! Will be great to have a friend to share with...

    Hey Krankykitty,

It doesnt say about a scan on my letter, my sis in laws it did and said about drinking water so im unsure.Im going to cork maternity hospital. But i wondering maybe i got such an early appointment is coz of my medical history etc..
I might just ring the hospital and find out its better than wondering.

wanna swop?!! Some women just don't get it, I'm jealous :). My husband's cousin had a baby last year. I was talking to her earlier and she said she had no advice because she never got any morning sickness. Thanks a lot for that!

Can't wait to hear how your scan goes now that you've found a clinic. Exciting!

    Hi everyone

don't mean to be the bearer of bad news but i know that in the Dublin Hospitals you can't go through the public system and then request a private room as the private rooms are booked through the consultants - so you need to have a private consultant in order to get a private room!

That's the way it was again when my second son was born and he's 7 months - but if it's changed - amazing!! I'd definitely pay for the upgrade - but I've checked this option out time and time again and it's a no go.

Hope everyone is keeping well. Private scan booked for Dec 1st - can't come quick enough!!
