As somebody who professes to know more about legal issues than anybody from Sligo (as you claimed in your first post) I'm surprised you use a tv programme as your source of knowledge!

Dean Lyons was an attention seeker and storyteller who also had a serious drug problem.
He had been the subject of psychological tests from an early age, and was known for his exaggeration of stories.

Maybe you should read more on the subject :

Can you give a qualified opinion that these two cases are similar, and that Sligo Gardai have not carried out their investigation properly prior to charging McGinley?

Sean, you shouldn't be feeding it. Just ignore it and it will go back under its bridge.

Is anyone else baffled by the lack of media coverage of this trial?

Is it a case of it being kept quiet because of garda incompetencies, or because the accused is a member of a so called 'ethnic minority'?

Don't know about TV coverage but there's plenty of coverage in the print media e.g. :

    Today
    Friday
    Thursday

Check the Indo for more. Sligo Champion had 4 or 5 pages of coverage today. Regard Garda incompetence, don't think it was. The 999 call said there was a man tied up in a house with brown gates across from the Garda Station. There seemingly is a house with brown gates within view of the Station and this was checked and nothing found. They did mention they get regular prank calls to the Station so thought no more of it.

At least Eugene Gillispie can now rest in peace as McGinley was given a life sentence today, Not half long enough in my opinion but at least he can't do this to anybody else or won't get the opportunity for a very long time, I hope McGinley is haunted for the rest of his life after what he did to this quite inoffensive gentleman.

Life should mean life, especially for a cold hearted b@stard who tied up and tortured a defenseless old man.

And of those that aided and abetted him?
We can be sure that he wasn’t hiding out without a bit of company.

Justice for a good honest decent man and his family but it will never ease their pain or their loss but a scumbag has been locked up

Mcginley's have brought no good to sligo their illegal camp should be closed and they should told say good bye to sligo your no edition

I hear ya Corvus. There's a paragraph about the sentencing in most of todays newspaper articles that really boils my blood
Mc Ginley was sentenced to life imprisonment, backdated to September 29, 2012 for time spent in custody.

He also received a 10 year term for the false imprisonment charge and 7 years for burglary to run concurrently with the life imprisonment.

If a life sentence was truly life, why bother backdating?

If a life sentence only means 15 - 20 years, then at least tag on other sentences consecutively.

In all likelyhood he'll probably be out before he is 50 years of age, still fit an able to continue his scumbag ways.

Not forgetting whoever was there assisting him when the robbery/murder happened.

No way was he on his own.

As far as I'm concerned this is just another to add to the list of unsolved murders in Sligo

These types hunt in packs preying on the vulnerable like dogs.
