oil in a moderator

Just a quick question. Would left over oil in a moderator make the shot be off target? Reason I ask is I missed the first stag I seen this year today and I don't think it was down to me. Conditions were perfect. But after I fired the shot all I could smell was like hot oil and there was excess smoke out of the moderator at the time of the shot.

    Shouldn't.

Was at the range today myself. Had the mod soaking over night in oil, after cleaning. Blew it out before heading off. The first two shots were smokey, but all grouped perfectly.

I would say this, and please don't take it as a criticism or insult. There are times when everything fits, feels good, and seems perfect and through a small unnoticed action on your behalf a shot is missed. It happens. It does not necessarily mean the rifle, ammo or mod is "off".

It could have been me it's possible I just taught maybe it could have made a difference with the oil and didn't want to oil it again if any 1 else had the same problem. I'll try get out tomorrow and group a few shots and see how they go

That's the best way. Eliminate any doubt about your rifle, and gear then it can only be the shooter.

I take mine off as soon as Im finished shooting, then I spray some wd40 into it and leave it standing upright in a warm dry place until needed again.
I also wipe the outsde with an oiled cloth.

A good soaking with an oil, and left to sit in a jar or some other clean container to collect the oil run out. Well wiped down on the outside with an oily rag. If you have access to a compressor and air line i usually blow mine out with it.

As important as cleaning the mod, and a sometimes overlooked this is the crown, and threading on the rifle. A friend recently asked me to look at his rifle. The threading was a mess, and the crown/muzzle was caked with carbon, and residue from being fired, and not cleaned.

Make sure the threading is cleaned well, and a fresh application of a copper grease or some other form of lubricant is used after each previous use.
