Dosing Gun + Hook

How do these work?

by work I mean refilling them??
surly you don't have to keep screwing the pipe on and off every time to refill

I have never used a dosing hook before are they are good for dosing suckler cows or weanlings or wild cattle in general?

this tool brings fun to dosing , u put the dosing drum on ur back and connect it to the gun and then u put the pipe to the hook , hold the hook in one hand catch the animal with hook in animals mouth squeze the gun with the other hand
and ur done on to next animal , its very easy on the operetor no pulling or dragging by the animal. some times dose suppliers supply a hook gun free of charge when u buy a lot of dosing with them

Just. Try and not use a thick dosing fluid as it can be tough to pump

I warm up the dose a bit to make it easier to pump. The bigger 100ml+ doses can be tricky when you have to go again to get it in to them .I will never again dose without the hook

The uncle got a "loan" of ours a couple of years ago he was nearly lynched when it wasn't returned. You'll meet the odd animal whose had a bit of self defence training somewhere and they can make it a bit difficult but compared to the old drenchers not really difficult at all.

I would have thought a combination of, the animal putting it's head down towards the ground, and most probably inside the animal in front of it, plus the chance of getting the hook under the tounge, as opposed to on top, plus the animal swing the head and generall being uncooperative, would render this contraption, just a hit and miss operation.
I dosed all my animals a few weeks ago, young and old, with a standard dosing gun. Was surprised how easy the job went, considering how long since I last used a dosing gun.

You will be an instant convert when you buy one!!!

You start at the back of the race so they do not see you coming. As always pack them in tight so they can not jump around. Heads down will always be a prob with an oral dose no matter what the tool used.

Heads down is a right pain in the nuts. I just gave up the last time after 4 of them in a row were at it. Nothing feels as dangerous as putting your arm and sometimes your head in through the lower bars trying to catch them. I just got a pour on instead.

I don't have a fancy dosing gun just the free plastic syringe I got off the vet.
Sneaking up on them is not possible when your refilling every time.

Lads are these hooks strong enoungh to pull up a cows head before you squirt it in ? Is there any particular make better than the rest and where is a good place for buying them online ? Thanks

Get one you wont regret it. We got one a few years ago and wouldn't be without it now not that any of our yokes would be two wild but its an ease when dosing year and halfs and the cows. The ones with the head down are always an issue. There is a knack to using it come at them from back of crush lift top lip with top of hook and push in then. Handy once you get going. Plenty of crowds on line selling them don't know what make ours is but its 70ml one. Get a least this size or larger if possible. Lots of drenches have larger dose rate than 70ml. There is a smaller one and you'd be dosing three times. Ours cost around 70 euro delivered I think a few years ago, (that might have included some proper injection syringes and spare needles which I ordered the same time).

Thanks PN what make is yours and is it fairly strong ? I dont want to get a flimsy one

Moy,

I think its a "prima tech" one couldn't swear by that but that's whats in head its a blue and grey gun. The one I had has a floating hook and you can dose with a normal nosel on it as well, handy for smaller calves as its as easy manhandle them as get the hook into their smaller mouths. Our one seems decent and you'd be able to get the hook in to there mouths and pull their heads up without breaking it. I've no idea how it compares to other guns hooks though as I've never compared them. As lads have said heavy thick drench can take a bit of driving through the gun though.

The only thing is that you could tear the roof of her mouth a bit if you catch them the wrong way and pull up the head with brute force.

like that but charelle gave a free one when we bought 7.5 litres. took 10 minutes to dose 30 strong animals and no skint knuckles off the wall.

need to get one now without the hook for the calves. I see a
shorted type noozle that screws onto the gun .

No you don't at all. Hook is perfect for calves. There hasn't been a calf dosed here for more than 20 years that wasn't done with a hook drencher.

I find it wasn't working for me. The distance from the gun to the hook and then trying to hold the calf and operate wasn't working. I don't have 3 hands

A drenching gun would be the job, Single hand on calf, single hand on gun.

One hand on hook and one hand on gun, why do you ned to use your hand on the calves?

because I wount be doing them down the crush. all suck calves so normally do them in the cattle trailer when moving them or in the calf shed.

Fair enough. Would a pour on ivermectin not be more useful to you esp in a dry year like this when the fluke challenege is low?

could be, but I use pour on when there yearlings in the shed. As calves I like to make sure there are getting it.

We use the ivermectin mainly outdoors. If the weather is fluky we'll give an anthelmintic(?spelling) from time to time at fluke rate but the pour-ons are handy and effective otherwise.

Got mine off connaght agri saw add in journal , it's very strong but cows getting wise to it used it last month and they all turned their heads back and towards the wall making it next to impossible without someone there to tap their head forward....would highly recommend one mine has fitting to use it as a normal gun aswell

I find that when using the hook I tend to use more dosing stuff, don't know if anyone else finds the bottle doesn't last as long. I always find I am inclined to give them an extra skite just incase:pac:

With oral being so much cheaper than injectables or pour ons a bit extra used/spilt is pretty small

hardly need a head scoop if you have a hook doser!

only other reason a head scoop would be handy is if administering boluses.

Person i know works in Chanelle and I'll be looking for it for nothing or at least very low cost

I often get damaged stock from them - maybe a gallon of dose that got spilled on when it was in the pallet or other stuff that the label was damaged on. Usually at significant reductions!

I know lads swear by them but do cattle not spit out the dose? I've dosed all mine recently with their heads locked in the locking feed barrier using a dosing gun. Despite how far down I get the gun, for some of them unless I hold their head up and mouth shut they manage to spit it out...

I have a dosing hook with years. Pushing thick Allbex type dose through the long tube and hook takes a lot of effort. After a couple of days of it you would have muscles like Popey The Sailor Man.:D

Warm it up first! The foot heater in the car is ideal for this job. It will be ready to flow by the time you go and get the cattle in

I see albex are giving a free hook dosing gun with their dose at the moment...

Ya I find the same thing happens and it takes two hands to use. i think the hand gun is nearly better as you can use one hand to catch them

i started using the hook doser a few weeks ago, it saves alot of the pulling and dragging, agree pipes are too long, main advantage id i dont have to catch the animal with tongs etx and do my knuckles in, have young lad with me and just get him to keep cows head up and i dose them

I got my hook doser from Chanelle for €20 with my 5 litres of Ridafluke

Will be testing it over the next few weeks.

We did 30 dry cows in half an hour this evening with the hook-wormer, no sweating no shouting. Our one is around with 20+ years and would be replaced immeadiately if anything happened it.
