Is my Treadmill KM or Miles

Ok as the above says I am trying to figure out what unit my treadmill is in, basically if I have it set to 6 I am walking pretty fast, almost a slow jog, any higher and I have to jog, at 10 I am sprinting pretty hard, it goes to 13 but I couldnt go that fast so have never had it that high.

I would like to get to the stage where I could run a 5k in 30 - 35mins but I dont know if my treadmill is in KM or Miles. Can anyone help me figure this out. Would it sound right that at 6kph I could comfortably walk whereas at 6mph I would almost be jogging.

Sounds like km. Make and model?

There may be no correlation between the numbers on your threadmill and the speed you are running. They could simply be a scale.

However, people normally start having to run once the speed is about 5-6mph.

Not at home at the mo, on the phone but will check it as soon as I can and post up. Would I already be running at 6mph do you think?

What height are you? Sprinting at 10 would suggest miles to me, I would consider 11-12 on a km treadmill to be a comfortable jog and 13 up to be running/sprinting.

I am 6ft, thats why I think it is in mph as at 10 I would be running pretty hard so to do the 5k in 30mins I would find it impossible to keep that pace up.

    Sounds like km to me.
If it's miles, then you're doing 5km in 30-35mins by walking at 6mph.
Ergo it must be km, or not related to either km or miles, but something in between.

Map a route, either with your phone, mapmyrun or gps, then go out and walk it briskly.
    That'll give you an idea.

+1. I can walk 4.5miles to work in about 1hr 15mins, thats 3.6miles per hour and I walk fairly briskly. I would only have 1 or 2 stops for traffic lights etc.

3.6miles per hour is 5.8km per hour

I was wondering if there is an app or pedometer that could help me with it, one that I could stick in my pocket and this would tell me how fast I am going, or would these be too unreliable?

    Yes, that sounds about right.

If the maximum it goes up to is 13, then there's no way it's in km/h unless it's very cheap. 13mph would be an all-out sprint for most average people. 13km/h is relatively slow and wouldn't let you do many training routines.

As MaceFace says, the numbers may not actually mean anything, it's simply a scale. But going by your description, it's probably mph.

There are lots of fitness apps which will use GPS to fairly accurately record you when you're out and about, but they won't work on the treadmill.

I was thinking the pedometer would not work on the treadmill, I was just thinking that if I was to run the 5k in 30 mins I would have to put the treadmill on 10 for the duration. There is no way in the world I could do this, granted I am pretty unfit now but even still I dont think I was ever able to run that fast for 30mins even at my peak.

The most I could manage now is probably 20mins at 7.5 or that non stop which is a relatively comfortable pace when jogging / running. I am trying to work towards being able to do the 5k in one go so I am trying to make sure that it is 5k I am doing. If I was to assume that it was in miles I would only have to go to 3.1 but if this was km well I would still be 1.9 short of my target.

The only way you can be sure, as far as I can see, is to get an app on the phone and go outside and run for 10 minutes, trying to maintain a 6 min/km pace according to the phone.

Immediately come back in and stick the treadmill on 10 and see if it's the same or noticeably faster. :)

Short of googling the model no and finding the manual for it, that's about the best you can do.

Considering the OP is unfit, I'd suggest walking at a specified rate for ten minutes instead of running.

If he can run/jog non-stop for 20 minutes, then he's not as unfit as he thinks he is :)

Would also think that it's MPH.

The ones that I use in the gym are KmPH and it would be something like this:-

    7.5 - fast walk
    10 - jog
    12 - running
    15 - sprinting

I definitely cant walk at 7.5 on the treadmill I have anyway would be off the back of it. I am wondering if it is just the treadmill I use that is a bit off speed wise, a mixture of km and mph as in somewhere in between, it wasnt the most expensive one ever think about €450 or that.

Does the treadmill give a read out of the distance done? If it does take a note of the distance run in at a given speed setting of teh treadmill, and time yourself, even if its only for ten minutes at a low speed you should be able to figure out what speed it is you are doing! speed =distance/time

The Nike+ app can measure your distance when running on a treadmill. I don't know how this works but I find it reasonably accurate for me
