Concept sounds great if they can pull it off, hopefully it will get the funding!

was a big fan of total annihilation and supreme commander, this could scratch that large scale RTS itch!
Plus anything that allows my to hurl giant asteroids at enemies = WIN

Saw your thread, went for the 95 dollar early bird.
Sounds like this could be excellent!! Loved TA and Supreme Commander and to some extend the second one.

Could be better than Diablo 3 ? :) Maybe ?

Sunk 100's of hours into RTS can't wait to see if they get funded. :)

I'm not a big fan of RTS games but on the other hand destroying planets does sound very appealing. I'll keep an eye on it.

They will have Linux support now too, and I read they're nearly half way funded in only 3 days so looking good!
What I want to see is a way to put big solar collectors on an asteroid that powers a big honkin space laser = Death Star!!

Going by the video it seems to be targeted at multiplayer, putting me off a bit. I don't really pay much multiplayer really.

while it doesn't look like it will have a single player campaign (it maybe a stretch goal) It would have a single player vs AI mode.

They got the same narrator as they had in Total Annihilation. I'm In!!!

I want that guy narrating my life.

I liked Kickstarter when it was about tiny budgets & just seeing how they are surpassed.

Now you have all these studios coming in with 6-figure prices and wondering why they're not being funded...
    Makes me kinda mad.

I raise you this! On a side note they have over 60% of the needed funding.

Why? There is a large demand for a decent TA successor, none of the big studios have managed it so far and this studio can't afford to do it without support - though they certainly seem to have a good idea of how to do it. They also don't want to do a half-assed job, which is what they'd be doing if they compromised on half of their projected budget. They have a realistic plan and people are backing them up to see that plan through.

What part of that, exactly, makes you mad?

Did Supreme Commander not fulfil the role of spiritual successor to TA, given that Chris Taylor stated as much since the rights to TA lie with Atari (i think?).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,371 ✭✭✭✭Zillah

Supreme Commander was a fairly poor game that carried very little of the TA spirit. I played it for about five hours and never went back to it. The similarities are there, but not in the way that counts. This is a common opinion.

  • Moderators Posts: 5,580 ✭✭✭Azza

I don't think that's a common opinion. I know several people who liked it including myself. It was well received critically too (86% on meta critic, 81% user score).

It's the giant, inflated budgets being asked for by half the developers that get me mad.

Anything in 6 figures just makes me wary.
Also, take a look at RPS' Kickstarter Katchup. Something seems very wrong with half these budgets IMHO.
But hey, I'm no developer; just a cynic.

That's not been my experience. I frequently hear people grabbing TA for some nostalgic fun, new map packs and custom AI being released - there's also a fan-made 4.0 patch that does loads of things, including redoing the pathfinding AI. Know how often I hear people talking about Supreme Commander? Never. There's a big thread over on Something Awful about this and the general opinion is "I am so excited about Planetary Annihilation because Supreme Commander was really disappointing".

For a game like Planetary Annihilation the proposed budget seems reasonable. I'm not saying all kickstarters are great, but I'd also steer away from a kneejerk reaction.

Well past it's goal and looks like it should break $2m when it ends in a little over two days!

Delighted this was fully funded (and then some), it's one of the few RTS games I've seen which genuinely excited me.

Curious as to why you think this?

Medium sized development team with wages to be paid over a 12-18 month period.
    Office space with utilities.
    Equipment.
    Software licences.

Regarding the teams themselves, quite often they're industry vets who often have families so it's not like they can afford to live on a subsistent wage during the lengthy development cycle.

So yea, it all adds up, especially when you're talking about larger scale games like Planetary Annihilation, Shadowrun Online, Bad Planet etc...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,091 ✭✭✭Antar Bolaeisk

Woohoo! Galactic War achieved. Hopefully they'll make it as far as the soundtrack target.

"the best beer to drink with Planetary Annihilation is probably an IPA. Maybe even an Imperial IPA. Something strong and hoppy as you watch your planet burn."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,091 ✭✭✭Antar Bolaeisk

http://www.twitch.tv/uberchannel Live feed of the countdown. Broke $2.2m so that's all of the stretch goals achieved plus some extra for beer.

Hoping for great things from this. Delighted that the orchestral score got funded - loved the soundtrack of TA. Also, page says that the Planetary Documentary has been funded. Has it been said what this is? Are we talking something along the lines of the Double Fine Adventure style documentary?

    🤪

I doubt it would be as in-depth as the DA Documentary. They haven't said what form it would take yet though as far as I know.

    latest update :

The big announcement of course was our overall project timelines and Steam availability. First off, project timelines:

Alpha will start to roll out this month, and a combined UberNet Alpha/Steam Early Access Alpha will start on approximately June 7th.
Alpha access will run for the summer, until the end of August.
Beta/Beta Early Access will run from September through the end of November.
Finally, we expect to have our worldwide launch in December of this year.
We’re very happy with the speed we’re moving at, and are at the point where we feel we can start to lock down much more concrete dates for alpha, beta and launch. We’re looking forward to the next parts of development with more direct interaction with the community.

Steam access is a convenience for some people who prefer to keep all their game keys in one place. If you wish to move your key to Steam, you’ll be able to once the game is live on Steam. If you wish to continue to simply play though our own service UberNet, you’ll be able to. No action is needed at this time for Steam access. We’ll send information once Steam keys are available for use. It also means it’s our first digital distribution platform besides our own, which means another way for the community to grow further and bring in more players.

Watch the LiveStream here, and keep an eye on here and your email box over the coming weeks if you’re a backer at the alpha level ($90 +). We look forward to hopping in game with you soon!

Regret not backing this at the time. Alpha is just released. €83 on steam.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,761 ✭✭✭✭degrassinoel

    I just seen that, hilarious!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,516 ✭✭✭✭VinLieger

WTF? 83 quid to test a game?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,845 ✭✭✭Jet Black

Yeah I know, as much as I like it no way I'd be paying that for alpha access. Its 45 for the game with beta access and 30 for just the game. Not due out til mid December though.

it's being called "Wallet Annihilation" on their forums lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,405 ✭✭✭gizmo

The price reflects the $100 tier in their Kickstarter campaign which was the first one to include Alpha access.

This "paying for testing the game" nonsense really needs to stop. If people keep clamouring for developers to move away from the traditional publisher model then these are the schemes which are going to be required in order to fund lengthy (and costly) development cycles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,845 ✭✭✭Jet Black

I can understand the price structure, the public have to support it. I think I'll just get the game and beta.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 733 ✭✭✭synesthesia

hmm ... i still think it was a mistake to make it available on steam at that price ... people are going mad on forums \ facebook ... a lot of bad publicity for nothing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

There are obviously people who are paying for it. That's why it keeps happening. If you don't pay, you can still get it on the official release at normal price. Which will make no difference to you in the end.

While I personally would never pay that kind of price for Alpha access, or even a finished AAA game that fed me bacon through the DVD drive, the talk on the forums of people not buying the finished product because of this kind of "stunt" is a bit odd. You're not forced to buy it now, wait and get it later at a normal price. If you're not prepared to put up the cash, quit whining because what you're actually annoyed about is people having access to the game, even in alpha, before you do. I know it's the internet though, and you get this kind of whining/anger all the time. Most of them will end up getting the game in the end anyways.

It does strike me as strange though, that people will pay that. Assuming you're actually submitted bug reports and all that, you're paying for the privilege of testing their game for them. To each their own, I suppose.

Yeah, I'm a bit confused by all the anger on the forums all right, Just don't pay for it and wait!!. Steam forums are usually such nice place too :)

I'm no longer confused unfortunately, what was it that Total Biscuit said awhile back?
TB: The most pervasive problem within gamers right now is a complete lack of critical thinking and analytical ability.

TB: Which results in stupid opinions based in shallow surface-level fallacious interpretations of what is actually happening.

Thankfully there are plenty of people who do understand the reasoning, hell a bunch of them were the original backers for the project via Kickstarter (who, incidently, would have been ****ed over if Uber had offered alpha access via Steam for less than the KS reward) unfortunately these aren't the people who, for instance, are spamming the games Metacritic page with god awful reviews.
