It's all smoke and mirrors at the Emirates it seems! Looking at last year's transfer debauchery, it's pretty simple to say that Wenger is not afraid of bringing transfers to the wire. Benayoun & Arteta, anyone?

Without sounding or being patronising towards Liverpool, fair play on Sahin. Wenger prob felt that the investment wasn't worth it, but again this is all speculation and it probably will be speculation until a press conference in March or something like that. These things usually come out in time.

Looking at the money that was on offer, I don't think it was worth the gamble. Look at Cazorla and how much we paid for him. A player that was La Liga player of the year, worked his gonads off for Malaga and worked out cheaper than the speculative price of Sahin. Good business economically methinks.

But, the time has passed, just like it did with Song and it's now time to focus on the trolls of Stoke. It's looking like the same squad as last week with Giroud probably starting and either Walcott or Podolski benched for the starting line up. Possibly a chance of the Ox starting?

Surely Poldi has the physicality to start against Stoke with probably Gerry going to the RW and Walcott benched?

I still can't get my head around the 115K a week, it can't be right. Still think we need a forward, if either giroud or poldo are out we're in trouble.

Have to say i'm disappointed again having been to the brink of another good signing and then pulling out. That's Arsenal though. Hope it doesn't come back to haunt us when we play Liverpool.

Yeah im disappointed to, but to be fair £5m loan fee and pay the majority of his wages is a bit much for a year long loan if there isnt an option to buy him outright. Real Madrid bough him for around £10m I think, so in effect we would be paying for half of him, developing him for the year and then handing him back to Real Madrid, possibly a better player. So when I think of it that way then we were definitely correct to pull out of the deal.

If we dont get Sahin I wuld be looking towards Nigel De Jong, absolute beast in the defensive midfield role and just the type of player we need to put a bit of steel in our midfield. Could get him for around 7/8 million.

I actually find the 5m bit a little hard to believe. I don't know where it came from either and it might just be a smoke screen. I think not having the option to buy was the issue.

I saw details on the BBC website (I think) that the loan fee was £2m and the wage contribution was £5m, so £7m in total.
Still think that it would have been reasonable to go ahead with because it would serve as a stop-gap to allow Wilshere settle back into the team. If everything went according to plan Jack would take over Sahin's squad spot next year, so no big deal about not signing a first refusal or option on him. Would we really have been willing to pay £115,000 a week to him anyways if he did prove a success and we wanted to hold on to him??

So, now that its looking like we are not getting Sahin. Who do you think we will get in? Will it be M'Vila?? Will Wenger pull another unknown out of his pocket? Will we get anyone? I know they are only rumors but it is all gone very quiet regarding Arsenal being in for anyone

Disappointed we didnt get Sahin but it looks like the right call to pull out. Too expensive.

Maybe so but if we get an injury to Arteta or Cazorla and Jack is not fit enough to play then we have again a very flimsy midfield. We have to cover our bases and dropping points because we have poor or inadequate cover could prevent us attaining a Champions League place. It would cost us more than a few million in the long run.

We need a good DM before the deadline, simple as.

Looks like it'll be a summer of profit on the transfer market. Same shit, different season.

    Hope so.
I can't see Wenger making the same mistake over and over again

Szczesny is a slight doubt for Stoke on Sunday, Kos is still not fully fit and The Ox should be back.
Wenger still says we are looking to fill one maybe two positions also, so the transfer window ain't over for us yet hopefully.

Fabianski or Mannone up against a barrage of Stoke Crosses and high balls  Szez better be fit....

I actually doubt we will get anyone else now.
Last year we had to, this year I feel Wenger thinks we have enough players.
Teams whose players we are supposed to be interested in will want more than the player is worth because it almost on the deadline too. Can't see us going again to be honest.

Saw somewhere as well that Fabianski isn't exactly fully fit either so Szczesny better pull the finger out.

That isn't exactly the best way to judge the success of a given window. Our transfer window has been much more positive this season in comparison to this time last year.

Anyway, I still expect at least one, possibly two, more signing(s).

Overall, we seem to have a pretty solid squad, good personalities and morale, and, with the exception of Theo (for the time being), all our main players seem to have committed futures.

Judging from Wengers press conference it seems he still wants to strengthen.

Jamie Sanderson ‏@YoungGunsBlog Arsène Wenger confirms Arsenal are looking at improving 'two positions'. Says he has 'clear idea' of business he will do.

Yeah im not denying that but in fairness, this time last year our transfer window was a disaster and was only saved by the last minute deals on transfer deadline day. I really hope we do get in one or two more signings, but if we dont then I will be extremely disappointed.

Getting rid of Song, RVP and replacing them with Santi Cazorla, Podolski and Giroud whilst making a profit is not really what I would call a success at this moment in time. Fair enough if the two strikers settle in then it will look good. However its still an unknown whether they will or not. We are still short in midfield with the Song departure, that still has to be addressed otherwise we could be in a bit of bother.

Think this tweet from fourfourtom sums up why we didn't go through on Nuri Sahin.

    FourFourTom ‏@FourFourTom

Liverpool are paying £5mil up front to loan Nuri Sahin for a year with no option to buy. Real signed him on a 5-year-deal for £7.9mil. Wow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,180 ✭✭✭UnknownSpecies

Wenger wouldn't take that deal in a million years. I can just imagine Wenger being offered Sahin for 5million and just assuming it's a permanent deal :P

    Is that £2m + wages = £5m, or £5m plus wages?

£5million just for the loan dean + ~70% of his wages. Arsenal weren't willing to pay that fee (and rightfully so) and only willing to pay 60% of his wages. That's what I've seen being reported anyway. Madness by Liverpool to be honest.

Jaysus will Liverpool ever learn. He goes there on trisl for a year essentially to see if hes suited to the rigours of thr PL. If he is one of the big boys csn make their move next year.Ureal.

    *spits coffee on keyboard*.

    Thats madness.

I'd pay it if there was an option to buy, in fairness.

Fair play to Liverpool, they but their money on the table. Lets see how it works out.

What a shame it didn't work out for us.

Are Man City waiting for us to offer Bendtner a new contract before they buy him?Nearly a year since they gave us any money.

That would be directly in keeping with your club's transfer business the last few years then wouldn't it?
