    Graham sounness talks some ****

I thought Souness was spot on tbh. No one at the club willing to put their body on the line and fight tooth and nail for the ball when we dont have it. Few silly niggly little rash challenges today that gave Chelsea and dead ball specialist Juan Mata of all people perfect opportunities and per usual we were found badly wanting. Allowed too much time and space to Chelsea. The philosophy of the team has to change imo because quite frankly the defending today was nothing short of shambolic.

Barcelona have a philosophy where if they lose the ball they have to win it back within 6 seconds. If Arsenal are to be as good as them then they have to aspire to that just as they did vs Milan last year at the Emirates.

We can spend as much as Man City and Chelea on players but unless we are willing to change our attitude towards defending we are on a hiding to nothing. I thought we had turned a corner with Bould coaching us but it would seem its the same old story different day.[/Quote Thought he was very harsh on arsenal, and bigged Chelsea up to something they weren't.

The team really needs to spend a lot of time in training on set pieces. 3 goals conceded in 2 games from set pieces tells its own story. And how many corners have we had this season. Have we forced a save out of a keeper with any of them ?

United losing at home is some consolation. Just a shame that it had to be the Spuds that done it

My tu'pence Arsenal weren't beaten by Chelski today, Arsenal were beaten by Arsenal today! Gutted but really thought Mert should of started with either of todays CB starters, they seem perfectly balanced when it's one of them with Mert.

I heard Steve Bold was on holiday this week....

We have conceded one goal from open play in six matches. The rest have been from set pieces. That is where our problem lies. That takes a lot of work in training so once we sort that out, we'll be flying.

Personally, I thought we were ok today. We conceded from set pieces (Mannone was awful for the second) but other than that, I cant remember much from Chelsea. Meanwhile we had a good few chances, just poor finishing cost us. Giroud was very unlucky not to score his chance late on.

It just didnt happen for us today, it happens. At least now the thread will be more active than its been since we sold RVP.

Lol.... but to be fair to him, he can only try and inject a new defense philosphy on the team and it is down to them to implement it on match day. We saw a good defensive Arsenal side in the first three games but against the big guns, the usual errors are cropping up.

Personally, I am not too upset about today's loss- yes we could have gotten a draw and if we didnt concede those cheap goals, we could have actually won the match altogether but I am still very sure of a top-4 finish. You could sense that the lads were quite nervous playing against a major rival at home and they were outclassed in the first 30 mins but they came good and created a lot of scoring chances during the course of the game. Diaby's early injury slightly destabilsed the team but to their credit, they regrouped as the game went on; Kols, Ramsey and to some extent Carzola had bad days and when such pivotal players dont perform, we couldnt have expected any better tbh.

I am looking forward to the next games before we play at O. Trafford in November- essentially, those games are must wins, and at worst we cant afford to loose at all. I believe in the team and I am sure we can do it.

Plus we can't cross the ball to save our lives. We badly need to get this aspect of the game in order. Over-hitting and under-hitting all day today. I wonder what they do in practice.

The first two matches were against teams who pretty much parked the bus yet both had a good chance to score against us.

Or like today we got a free sent verm up then payed a short free lost the ball, verm had to rush back ended up giving away a free which they score from

Just cut out the brainfarts too

Button, lets be frank the league generally dont have those whipping boys/teams anymore. Most teams are playing with a sense of belief and gone are the days when we were sure that Arsenal will always beat West Bromich or Sunderland home and away.

The first game against Sunderland was the first without RVP and we introduced Carzola, Poldoski and Giroud who probably met each other weeks earlier- def it was going to be tricky for the team to gel on day 1. The second was against Stoke, a very funny side to play- even the other top teams struggle against them.

Like you and most fans, I am disappointed with the outcome of todays match but I see the positives.I see a team that doesnt depend on the brilliance of one or two players, they are playing as a collective which is important in football or most things in life anyway. Could we have done things differently? Absolutely! But like the commentators say, it is still a work in progress. We got a point off Man City last week and were unfortunate not to get a point or even 3 today but I am sure we will do ok.

I am loving the level of competitiveness in the team, it is brilliant! Kol messed up today and he will have enough time to dwell on that- on the bench I will imagine. Walcott is struggling to start a match after the exit of RVP and Song- who would have thought? Diaby is gone for 3 weeks and we are not really worried- good stuff. I havent given up on Giroud just yet but Gervinho is deputising till he comes good- a lot to be postive about considering that we were virtually written off before the season started.

Have to ask whats with Gervinhios nazi like salute after he scores a goal, obviously given nazi's hated Black people I'm guessing thats not what it is but Van Persie did it last season as well is it some Arsenal thing?

I won't hear any bad mouthing about Gervinho but what is that celebration?

I don't need to say what it looks like.

We've been lousy at defending set pieces for some time now. I hope Bould's influence kicks in soon, its costing us games.

Last year City were 16-2-2 against bottom-half teams and 19-5-2 against the bottom 13.
Meanwhile United were 17-1-2 against the bottom half and 22-2-2 against the bottom 13.
EDIT: We were 12-4-4 against the bottom half and 15-5-6 against the bottom 13. Had we matched United against the bottom 13 we would've been just one point off 1st.
We finished third last season and need to be pushing on or at the very least consolidating strongly.

The issue I have with the first two matches was the "positive" of our defence. Any team who lost against those two teams playing that way should forego payment that week. Think it was against Sunderland in injury time we were 1 v 4 or 5 in their half, absolutely pathetic.

I'm not happy with ok anymore. It was fine while we had massive financial constraints but they're pretty much gone.

I was more positive before the season than I am now. To me most of the apparent positives this season aren't particularly accurate. Let's look at our solid defence. First two matches of the season we still could've conceded to breaks against teams parking the bus. Third match a poor Liverpool hit the post at either 1-0 or 0-0. 4th match was great, played against an open team and scored plenty and let one in. Against Montpelier we looked very ropey. City, yes we looked pretty good but City have looked a step behind so far this season compared to last. Carling Coca Cola Super Mega Cup isn't worth mentioning and then we have today where we conceded from pretty much the only chances Chelsea created and were regularly beaten to the first touch. Had Chelsea been more cynical and gone down more we could easily have had 3-5 yellow cards in the first 20 minutes with some of the late tackles going in.

Anyway, time will tell. I hope I'm wrong but I just hope that unless it's us another English team doesn't win the CL because we may not be in it next season.

We've been here before tbh. Today was our first stern test - to win at home against another title contender. The pity was Chelsea didn't have to do much to get the win - easy now to say we should have played Mertesecker - but would Chelsea have scored two soft goals from set pieces? Also our corners and set pieces were not good. I couldn't understand Arsene's logic ... bring off Podolski and Ramsey for Giroud and Walcott ? Why take off Podolski when he will at least be combatative, especially when your taking off Ramsey as well ? Gervinho was again very wasteful and gave away the ball needlessly. Would have thought Podolski Giroud and Walcott was the way to go ...

Unfortunately it looks like the Diaby comeback was a false dawn. When he went off we lost our shape and confidence for a while ... but how many of us expected this ? We need a holding combatative midfielder - (they had two in Mikel and Ramires) ... I thought that we should have taken M'Villa during the summer - now I hope we don't regret it. Arteta is playing well as a defensive midfielder but he needs a solid defensive partner ... and neither Chamberlain or Diaby is it. The two full backs did well. I was disappointed with Gervinho ... yes he scored but he then proceeded to wait for things to happen instead of trying to make things happen. I think Arsene is being unfair to Giroud ... and should Arshavin have been given a chance ? Theo just looks like he wants to sulk ... did he even try ? I suppose the only way to get over this is to beat West Ham away next week ... not easy but it's what is required. I detest Alardyce ... I hope we stuff them.

I am not one for stats and sh*t but surely City and United have an unfair advantage if they are allowed to field 20 to 30 players against 11.How have they gotten away with this?Them bastards.

From a forward point of view im not too disappointed but the goals conceded today were a disgrace. they are the big downfall of this club. We definately have the firepower from midfield up but cant afford to go a goal behind like that or the opposition will close up shop

I still think this is our year.

Your the definition of an optimist if thats the case. Same old habitual bull**** today The manager crowding the pitch with midfielders and no real striker up front. Giroud left rotting on bench when its an ideal game to throw him in.

I rate Kocielny normally but the goals conceded today have become part of the culture of the club since the back 4 retired. Not good enough in my opinion. I suppose the only optimism we have at this point in time is that the manager has picked up on it but tbh if we were even in a position to sign Kompany and Vidic in the morning they would find it hard to excel with the way we defend. Its sub-standard and wont win anything

    Bah ha ha ha.

And after an off day against the CL holders, they're back out in force.

EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED!!!! We're only keeping clean sheets against crap teams, Liverpool HIT THE POST!!!!!!!!!

    Get a grip people.

    Seriously, get a grip.

Seen a good few players do it now.

While Kos was definitely weak for the first goal (not watching the flight of the ball - unforgiveable), he was more unlucky on the 2nd, difficult to defend a ball like that.

Both goals from free-kicks due to impetuous challenges from Vermaelen - I know it's been said before, but I think his goals and attitude can allow us to overlook his not infrequent lapses, in particular a rashness in tackilng. Hopefully Bouldy can knock that out of him - early days ...

imho i think mert should be our number 1 defensive name on the teamsheet. I know he's slow but his reeading of the game is second to none and we look so much more composed defensivly when hes on. I cant remember who said it in here, but I'd keep mert n kos in def n try verm in a dmc role. he does like to push forward sometimes.

Everyone calling for mert now first time he gets skint he will get murdered on here
In truth we have 3 class CBs unlucky for us two of them were poor yesterday, both are usually top quailty

With diaby out now let's finally see if coq is good enough to be a first team player im sure he is gonna get his chance

Might get ripped for this but I have changed my mind and would keep Jenks in RB until he gives a reason to be dropped
Thought him and Gibbs were brilliant yesterday

There's no need to rush Sagna back, that's for sure. But I'd like to ease him back in when he reaches full fitness. Jenkinson has done very very well, but Sagna is one of the best full backs in the World

I agree sanga is better just saying if keep Jenks in until reason to be dropped

I'm slightly worried bout sanga two broken legs in a year and he is 30 I fully understand why the club are waiting a little on the contract
