Lets face it, games that come out every year with a movie title behind them usually suck. But there must be exceptions. What do you think is the best movie based game released so far?

Most of the old star wars games before the new trilogy were pretty great. Stuff like X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Dark Forces and the Super Star Wars games.

Although not based on an actual movie, the original Alien vs Predator game was awesome. Chronicles of Riddick wasn't bad either, and I had a soft spot for Jurassic Park on the SNES back in the day.

little writeup about the relationship between the games and the movie (and the book the movie was based on)

Brilliant indeed, but not based on any of the Batman movies past or present.

The Arkham games are not based on movies. But the 8-bit Batman game based on the Tim Burton film was good.

I also remember The NES Star Wars game being great, but revisited the Super Star Wars trilogy a few years ago, and those games have not aged well. I really, really, really wish they would drop all these dumbed-down SW games and reboot the X-Wing/TIE Fighter franchise.

STALKER shares little with the film it's purportedly based on bar the Russian setting and the name (in turn, the film itself is supposed to be based on the Russian SF novel Roadside Picnic, but has **** all in common with it.)

Robocop 3D on the PC blew me away...in 1993. Probably rubbish in retrospect. There was also a first-person Terminator game, based on the first film, in the same period.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was a good early Lucasarts graphic adventure, but was topped by the excellent (to fans, unofficial Indy IV) Fate of Atlantis.

Riddick was good, well the first one anyhow, I never got around to Dark Athena.

The SNES version is equally beloved, but has a less persuasive soundtrack.

Various others too: Chronicles of Riddick, King Kong, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Dogtooth...

    Escape from New York...

    (Metal Gear Solid)

    Great shout !
I forgot about the Disney Movies etc

I used to love Lion King/Toy Story games also.

Oh, ...and I game I had, and was crazily difficult , but completed when I was a kid , and recently tried on an emulator and couldn't get past the first level , was BTTF3

I haven't played them myself yet, but I hear The Warriors and The Thing(technically a sequel) are both good games.

Then the SNES Star Wars games, the first Force Unleashed, and personally I actually liked James Cameron's Avatar

God, don't get me started on that ****ing game. One of the most infuriating in existence. The motorbike sections... the need to collect 'future objects' to complete a level... the escort missions... Makes me stress just thinking about it!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,411 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Terminator 2 was absolutely appalling, get out of here!

The arcade gun game though was rather good.

Also no mention of Robocop on the Spectrum? For shame!

    Batman Returns on the Snes

You got to beat the shìt out of everyone in fun ways, loved slamming people up against the wall:

I loved "True lies" on sega. I was a huge fan of movie and I loved game. I presume it was **** and that just a nostalgia talking. :D

More recently wolverine certainly wasn't a great game but was well above par on the games made based on movies list.

Lego indy and starwars could fall into the same catagory perhaps.

Spiderman 2, great game. I loved every minute of playing that and even just turned it on for a swing.

Is the telltale Back to the Future game any good, love the Monkey Island remakes I got on disc so is it worth my time picking this up?

I really enjoyed X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it was so much better than the movie. Some of the boss fights were too long (particularly
    Gambit
), but it was so much fun.

Toy Story 2 on the PS1 what a game that was

It is considered one of the best 3d platformers of the PS1 in my books

Batman the Movie was excellent for it's time. Hitting the joker as he climbed into the helicopter at the very end with your grappling hook was epic. I still remember doing it for the first time and the fall that follows!!

Actually that reminds me, Batman on the NES is really good. Based on the first Burton movie.

You say that now. Go play the C64 version and then come back to me :(

EDIT: While most of my faves have already been mentioned already, I really did enjoy Alien 3 and Lion King on the SNES.

That's why I linked the Amiga version ;)

A friend got it on the C64 about a year after I had it on the Amiga500 and I remember watching him play it and thinking "that is not the same game" while telling him "yeah best game ever...."! He had a bit of an inferiority complex!! :p

    Master of the Universe

Demolition Man for the Megadrive is a good game which unfortunately was really overlooked.

True Lies on the Megadrive doesn't look the best but it plays okay. The ammo pickup sound at 42 sounds like it's from Duke 3D or Doom...?

One of my own personal favs, I love this game - Robocop Versus the Terminator

    The greatest of them all

E.T. was pretty faithful to the story of the movie in the way you went down holes to get bits of a phone and levitated out of them.

One of my favourite games of all time is Blade Runner. Absorbing, gorgeous to look at.

Tales of Monkey Island? They're fairly similar. Like most Telltale Games... games in my experience. ;)

Yeah the warriors game a few years back was brilliant, really enjoyed it!

Can you dig it? Caaaaan you diiiiig it!!!!!

The World is Not Enough on N64 was a decent 1st person shooter, not as good as Goldeneye and also was one of the last games released for that system so didn't get much attention.

From Russia With Love is a decent 3rd person shooter on PS2

Technically it's a sequel to the movie, but Scarface: The World is Yours was a good game.

Again, its a sequel to the movies, but Ghostbusters on PS3 is quite good too.

One thing that bugged me about the Alien 3 game was that there were so many xenomorphs, so nothing like the movie. :)
