So after a disastrous 7 days of racing at Galway, where i couldn't pick a winner if my life depended on it I've decided to start a log on Irish Racing. Hopefully it will help me to get some winners and get my confidence back up.

The hardest part will be the start I think and I will be picking horses in every race in Ireland. At the start I wont be backing with my own money but an imaginary balance and after a while I might start to back them.

This log though is a bit of fun/experiment so criticism is welcome but make sure you have a reason for criticizing my picks or me.;)

    Starting Bank: 100pts

    Tomorrows Picks:

Class horse in the race third in the bumper at Cheltenham and should take a lot of beating here. Raise The Beat and Tom Tate's newcomer Absolute Heratic look the pick of the rest.

    Cork 3.05-Echo Bob 2pts @4/1

Well in judging by his chase mark. Rated 135 in that sphere when third in a Grade 3 at Aintree. Has been in the first 4 on 3 of his 4 visits here including of 102 in a handicap hurdle. Should go close under the in-form Mark Enright who claims 5.

    Cork 3.35-Mossey Joe 4pts @ 8/13

Should win this. Well in at the weights. Two runs here he has won both on Good and Soft ground. Jumping over fences at times is bad and this should boost his confident. If not up to it Gimlis Rock can take the prize.

    Cork 4.05-Queen Of Hardship 1pt @ 12/1
Came close last time out and should soon win, step up in trip should suit and definite place claims.

    Cork 4.35-Minella Lady 1pt e/w @ 8/1

Was unlucky last time at Kilbeggan in similar conditions and can atone for that near miss here. This is a bit more competitive though with many in with a chance and this is an e/w punt. Reafadda and Star of Massini are particularly interesting.

    Cork 5.05-Fitzgutentyte 1pt e/w @ 15/2

Good run last time and dangerous from this mark on a fly weight. Frankie Flowers an obvious danger.

    Cork 5.35- Wrong Way Corrigan 2pts @ 15/8

Won't find a better opportunity I think than this a lot of horses seemingly who look to be suited by farther.

    Old Bank: 100pts
    In Play: 16pts
    New Bank: 84pts

    Naas 2.20-Mouteab 2pts @ 7/2

    Naas 2.50 -Engage The Dance 1pt @ 8/1

    Naas 3.20- Blue Bullet 1pt @ 3/1

    Naas 3.50-All Silver 1pt e/w @ 7/1

    Naas 4.20-Red Calima 1pt @ 7/1

    Naas 4.50- Nurse Ryan 2pts @ 7/2

    Naas 5.20-King Of Dudes 2pts @ 7/4

Roscommon 5.45: Top Man Michael 2pts @ Evens

Good win at Galway on Sunday and after that race the trainer said he stays well and his done plenty of schooling should go well if okay for his exertions.

    Roscommon 6.15: Enchanted Forest 2pts @ 5/2

Former Aidan O Brien horse and should be better for a recent flat run. Second on his sole hurdles start today this looks like an winnable maiden.

    Roscommon 6.45: A Decent Excuse .5pts e/w @ 28/1

Was surely just out to get a handicap mark in his 3 maidens and ran well over same trip at Cork. He may not win today but is one to watch and too big of a price to ignore.

    Roscommon 7.15: Pestal And Mortar 1pt e/w @ 12/1

Some good runs over hurdles and one bad one. This isn't the strongest begginers chase and getting a bit of weight could make her presence felt.

    Roscommon 7.45: Western Island 1pt e/w @ 12/1

Sure too go close if you ignore his last run and was third off this mark the run before that. Too big at 12/1.

    Roscommon 8.15:Baby's Hot 1pt @ 8/1

Unexposed over fences and ought to go well after a recent hurdles run. A risky one though in hope it will improve now in a handicap.

    Roscommon 8.45: Bold Revenge .5pts e/w @ 10/1

Second in two points will improve for maiden hurdle run. Mullins should win this though.

    Old Bank: 89.88
    In Play: 11pts
    New Bank: 78.88

Good start today but lost 3pts after having nothing in the last 4 races. Mullins didn't win the bumper either which is surprising. Sligo picks tomorrow will be up shortly. I might not be able to put up all prices or the picks for the next 4 days as I am busy, but I will try my best. If I get picks up and there is no price at the time of writing I will use SP.

A mixed day I suppose. Happy to have made profit on the day and overall but disappointing that the NAP Chill was beaten by a head. Monterrey was also second and Enchanted Forest was third had these all came in it would have been a wonderful day. Second Glance and Engage The Dance werent confident selections in tough handicaps and Khayar was a NON RUNNER. Mudaffar improved from his first 2 runs to take the second race! Gowran today is off and Tramore is off tomorrow but they go at Leopardstown first race off at 4.50.

    Leopardstown 4.50: Strike Action NAP 3pts @ 7/1

Could be potentially well handicapped. Beaten on his seasonal debut by a horse who since won of 6lbs higher, the fifth has won 3 times since and once over hurdles while Custom Cut back in seventh beaten 3l by the favourite was since placed off a 35 pound higher mark and has won 4 times off higher marks. The form of horses down the field wasn't great but this too me is an excellent run. In his maiden win he beat horses rated 70 and 73 into 2nd and 3rd and he had Multitasking 5th(rated 82) and Hexagonal 10th (Rated 87). I expect a big run.

    Leopardstown 5.25: Snow Queen 2pts @ 13/8

Aidan and Joseph O Brien can score in the second race here with this twice raced two year old a sister to group 3 winner Carribean Sunset. If she shows up on the form she showed in her last run in a group 3 she should be hard bet.

    Leopardstown 5.55: Mona Brown 2pts @ 7/2

Her first two runs were quite impressive and she flopped at Galway last time. If shes back to her best she should win this, although Circle could be dangerous.

    Leopardstown 6.25: Six Of Hearts 1pt e/w @ 14/1

Big ask here off top weight but 2lbs lower than his last win and he has an inform jockey up. a competitive event and if the real Six Of hearts shows up he can win. He will like the ground and he won a group 3 over Course and Distance so fingers crossed.

Leopardstown 6.55: Hall Of Mirrors 2pts

Should improve from debut 3rd to win this. O Briens horses are always better for the initial experience but he is a less then confident selection in a tough race.

    Leopardstown 7.25: Duntle 2pts @ 4/1

Decent G3 and Duntle can score. She is highest rated in the field bar Penitent who she is getting a stone from. She was and impressive maiden winner by 18l and won at Ascot last time in a Listed Handicap giving weight away to nearly everyone. I think she is capable of winning this if on song. Native Kahn is one to watch but needs farther than a mile I think and will pop up soon at a big price over farther than todays trip.

    Leopardstown 7.55: Unhinged 1pt @ 9/1

Won this last year off 6lbs higher mark and I think he should go close.

Tramore is off! Leopardstown yesterday proved to be very unlucky had 4 win bets which all placed. Jospeh O Brien put up 2lbs ow and lost the two maidens in which I backed him and to make things worse he won the maiden in which I also had the second. Duntle won the feature event to give me a bit of my stakes back. Strike Action was outpaced and not given a hard time too finish 3rd! Definelty needs farther.

    Tramore 5.15: Porterman 1pt @ 5/1

This is a weak race and I think Joanna Morgan's horse has scope to improve now over sticks. The main reason I like his chances is that Davy Condon has gone for this 1 instead of Elliots horse.

    Tramore 5.45: Echo Bob 1.5pts @ 11/4

Rated a lot higher over fences and that brings him into the equation as well as his excellent course form.

    Tramore 6.15: Sweet Sylvia 1pt e/w @ 22/1

Following her 3rd place finish in this last year I think Sweet Sylvia may have been laid out for this race and off a 3lbs lower mark, she has a live e/w chance at 25/1. The only worry for me is the heavy ground but if she is tuned up she has a great chance.

    Tramore 6.45: Heavenly Chorus 3pts @ 11/4
A really good run behind Shadow Eile last time and if she reproduces that here of 1lb higher she should go close.

    Tramore 7.15: Raheenwood 1pt @ 14/1

Can see this goin to an outsider and I reckon this 1 can go close if on best form. He has won his only outing h ere in what is a tricky course to win at.

    Tramore 7.15: Ballymac's Present 0.25pts e/w @ 50/1

Jumped off the page and a small punt at a big price.

    Tramore 7.45: Son Of Moyne 1pt @ 8/1

If he is on song he's a live outsider. 3rd here on same ground, 1 furlong less and off 3lbs less if reproducing that he can go close.

    Tramore 8.15: Glenmullen Bridge 1pt @ 9/2

A hopeful punt in a tricky race. Should improve for debut run.

This is a weak race and I think Joanna Morgan's horse has scope to improve now over sticks. The main reason I like his chances is that Davy Condon has gone for this 1 instead of Elliots horse.

Thanks for the advice Mocha. I'm only using a virtual bank and I think I'm going to cut back on my picks in a week or so. I agree with you though and will pick less horses soon.

There are obviously winners in there, just need to cut out some of the losers. Recently started taking horse racing more seriously myself and the main thing I've done is make way less bets and it's going much better. Hope to see you with a profitable log soon.

    Bellewstown Thursday:

    5.00: Shadow Eile(NAP) 5pts @ 4/9

Class act in a very weak mares hurdle. Should win at a hack. Likely 2nd favourite Spring Hawk is 22lbs inferior in the ratings and only gets 8lbs here.

    5.30: Distant Memories 3pts @ 2/1

A good 8th in the supreme at Cheltenham and that sets the standard here. Had a nice pipe opener at Galway when 2nd on the flat and could go well again.

    6.00: Bulletproof 1pt @ 8/1

This one won last time and I like his chances again today as he's only 6 and still improving. Keep an eye out for rockazar as well. The ground is a worry now though.

    6.30: Redera .5pts e/w @ 12/1

Ran really well in the County hurdle at Cheltenham to finish 8th and although he has a big weight to carry here he might be able to pull it off under his 7lb claiming jockey.

    6.30: Face Value 1pt e\w @ 12.1

He is far too big a price at 12/1 after 2 wins in a row. He gets a 4yo allowance here and Keith Donoghue takes off 3 more pounds. He should run a big race here.

    7.00: Gate Please 1pt e/w @ 3/1

Impressive winner of a bumper at Galway and previously a point winner, he will be suited by a step up in trip and if he takes to jumping he's a got a good e/w shout.

    7.35: Talab 1pt @ 16/1

Won his maiden hurdle over course and distance two years ago and was then placed off 109 in a Leopardstown handicap. Coming back to form lately and with Bryan Cooper up he could win.

    8.05: Four Wives .5pts e/w @ 16/1

Half sister to Mariah Rollins a G1 winner over fences. This one can be excused for her debut on ground that was very heavy, and on better going she might have a squeak here.

Took a bit of a break but I'm back now! They go at Ballinrobe tonight and I think the Great Shangai should win the last!

    8.00: The Great Shangai 3.77pts @ Evens

Not the greatest price in the world but I reckon The Great Shangai should be odds on in this small field of five. This 7 year old started off his career in point to points in late January and on his first couple of starts he was pulled up. He probably took a few runs to get fit so I think I will ignore those efforts.

His next start in the points was when he finished a well beaten 6th although that was an improvement on his first 2 starts. He improved further next time out where he finished a decent 2nd to Oscar Leney. That run was on good to Yielding and on that occasion he was beaten by a better stayer.

Then he made his debut under rules in July and he won his maiden hurdle impressively as he stayed on over 2miles to get up in the dying strides. The runner up Ted Dolly won since at Cork beating the third from the Cheltenham bumper so that form looks strong. Next time at Galway on his chase debut he again stayed on strongly but this time was just beaten by Tabhactach whom was getting 5lbs off The Great Shangai. The form of that Galway race has worked out fairly well with quite a few runners placed next time out.

I think tonight in a weak 5 runner field the main danger to the Great Shangai would be the small field as the least number of runnner's he's faced is 13. The step up in trip will suit him and is unexposed compared to his rivals. Matthew Bowes takes off a nice 5lbs so he is getting weight from all bar 1 runner. The only danger I can see is if one horse goes off in front and gets too far away but I do think if that doesn't happen The Great Shangai should win it and go on to bigger and better things.

    6.30 Ballinrobe: Fibril 1pt @ 8/1

This looks to be a weak 3yo handicap and although Daigreen is a worthy favorite following a course and distance victory 15 days ago. However an 8lb rise and heavier going may stop a repeat victory and instead a chance is taken on the inconsistent Fibril. His trainer Gerard O Leary has a small yard where he trains 10 horses and has had no winners this season and over the last 5 years he has only had 7 wins! Tonight's jockey Rory Cleary is 0-11 for the yard so it is hard to have confidence in the horse on this aspect.

His last run at Galway wasn't too bad and he had a chance turning in but didn't get up the hill. Two runs previously he had his best run in a while when 3rd on heavy ground at Bellewstown and since that day he has dropped 2lbs in the handicap and gets weight from all bar one rival. If Fibril can bring his A-Game to the table today he has got a live chance.

    6.00 Ballinrobe: Jpevie 2pts @ 5/2

Won his maiden last time out and sure to improve again. His stable are in good form with plenty of wins and places in August. Shifting is the main danger as she is well in at the weights but she may not handle the ground. Jpevie is the selection on the basis that he likes the heavy going.

    7.00 Ballinrobe: Osana 3pts @ 11/8

Osana is very much overpriced here in a small field here. A very good hurdler on his day. Second in a champion hurdle and a good chaser too, he had been out of form but a good second over 2m 6f at Kilbeggan was followed by a decent 8th at Galway in the plate. If reproducing those efforts he has loads in hand here. Schelm may be one for the forecast following his 2nd last year!

The Great Shanghai made a hash of the 2nd last and Mattie Bowes couldn't stay on board. It is unclear whether he would of won or not as Jakros did it nicely and it looked as though he would be better suited by farther. The Great Shanghai is of interest again next time up!
