Only your third input on this thread, two of them trying to antagonise me, i've noticed you at it on other threads.
    you should get out more

Why is this still going on? Chains don't need scheduled or periodic replacement at any age/mileage. Opinions are welcomed however fact wins over opinion.

Sometimes, just sometimes, other people know more then you on a particular subject.

it has been fun, hope your friends car wears well.

Wouldn't it be great if his friend got years of trouble free motoring from his nice cheap car and didn't spend unnecessary money on changing the chain?

I am seriously thinking about my 325i. It must have been on its last leg with 190k odd miles, screaming @7000rpm with original chain, tensioners from 1993...

...Sold her in tip top condition last december...

Nothing lasts forever, but a properly engineered and maintained chain should last the life of the engine.

There are certain cars/engines which suffer chain issues due to manufacturing defects in the chain itself or the tensioner, Nissan Almera/Micra/Primera and numerous BMW's being examples but the majority of chain issues are down to poor maintenance.

Depending on the engine i would assume its a timing "belt" that would be in a car like that, either ways its best to change it ( the belt or chain)

if he doesn't know when its due, it could be very expensive if he ignores it, more than what the car is worth imo, if its a chain, at 159k, its due one

all i do know though is that the 2.3 Mazda 6 has a chain,

as for erroneous information--oh i did, did i,,,,was that where i said he should change it if he doesnt know? if so how was i in error?

anybody with an ounce of intelligence that bought an eight year old Mazda with 160k on the clock would change it, belt or chain (if they dont know the history)... its just common sense, you have already contradicted yourself by stating he should refer to the service book, while the same sentence saying the mechanic may have "forgot" to reset counters,,,

People seem to forget, a full service in most main dealers is only an oil & filter change with a top up of other fluids, not exactly a full inspection.

People are on your case because you attempted to argue that changing a problem free chain is a must due to mileage, age or 'common sense', which is simply incorrect.

The only "doctor" in this thread most certainly does not need Google for any mechanical information.

In simple English OP, there is nothing to worry about regarding the timing chain of a Mazda 6 assuming the car has been properly maintained.

One troll on this thread does not change the fact that timing chains are designed to and do last the lifetime of any correctly maintained engine, with the exception of some Nissans, VWs and BMWs.

well he needs to learn how to read a thread then,,,maybe some things ive tried to put across have been lost in translation,,,, but again my advice ,,,for the last time,,,,for the experts here (and there seems to be many) and the "doctors",,,if I BOUGHT IT,,,ID CHANGE IT,,,, just for peace of mind,if i was concerned,as the OP seemed to be

    Land Skolvo, no?

Actually, around the time the OP's friend's Mazda 6 was built, Ford owned Mazda, Land Rover and Volvo...and Jaguar.

...So does that mean I can consider my 6 to basically be a Jaguar XF? :p

Well the 6s have a solid reputation, never really heard a bad thing said about them and I personally have found mine to be very comfortable and reliable.

I always assumed the 3s were just the same but I've only ever driven one and that was on a racetrack so wasn't really concentrating on doing a full analysis of the car.

Why? It's a bit of a broad statement, you'll have to give a few examples to make it plausible. Or just start putting a disclaimer on all your posts rather than presenting them as fact.
Not exactly top of anyone's lotto list obviously like, but for what they are I haven't heard many complaints?
From an engineering point of view, or whatever point of view you like, give us an ol summary of what makes them unmitigated balls of shyte?
