16 gauge isnt a very common calibre over here. Its more a trad German /midddle European calibre that falls between 12 GA and 20 GA.So as to what it exactly serves a purpose anymore is a big question. Want a light low recoil gun ,get a 20 GA ..Want a standard cal get a 12 GA.
ammo might be abit of a problem, usually you can get 12 GA most anyplace and 20 GA in 80% of the shops.16 GA is the odd man out here.Unless you intend to do a bit of shooting on the continent and 16 is as common as 12,but starting to wane there too.

Browning, well ,very little to wrong there, unless totally abused and used as a truck jack lever or a coal mine pit prop or the like.If it is a Auto 5 humpback,a stripdown , solvent clean of all the parts and light oiling and possibly a friction collar replacement on the mag tube ,is all they need.
You would have a good gun if you can source ammo for it easily enough, and dont mind a limited choice of ammo brands or loads.:)

He's been told by the gun dealer that he can order the cartridges for him no bother

If it's an A5 in good nick, go for it and buy as much ammo as the cert allows. Don't think there's any harder wearing semi-automatic gun out there and there probably never will be either.

As Grizzly said, 16g isn't that common but can still be got with a few phonecalls. Most of the bigger dealers would have some in stock most of the time.

Theres a fine line between being different and being awkward..

Careful now!Just because it is a 16 ga and they are somwhat rare here does not make it a collectors piece.:)Nearly or otherwise...it is either a collectors piece or not.. Unless it is a specific commerative model,or maybe a Renaissance model, which will be pretty obvious by the engraving or the event being commerated on the reciver,it is a Browning 16ga auto 5,and you deal on its condition. If it has some collectors value,a trip home and a look on the Blue book of gun values onmline will give you an idea of its collectability and value.

my missus has a double 16bore browning i take it out from time to time , to be honest there is sod all difference shooting it range wise compared to a 12 bore it will kill every bit as well at the same sort of ranges as the 12 however it is lighter and faster handling than my 12 bore aya's , certainly for a long walk shooting birds it's an easier carry and i wouldn't feel constrained by the calibre.
cartridges are easily enough sourced i tend to use eley grand prix it shoots well and likes those however the choice of cartridge is limited and you won't find heavy loads and bigger shot sizes than 5 in my experience

The Browning Sweet Sixteen uses a true scaled frame mated with a 16 gauge barrel, and its buttstock interchanges with an A-5 light twenty, making for a lighter more responsive auto. Serial No. information here: http://www.browning.com/customerservice/dategun/detail.asp?id=13

The 16 is far and away my favourite gauge for rough shooting. A nice way to build a gun light and strong that can handle an ounce perfectly and 1-1/8 oz. of No. 4 or 5 pattern very well in a 16.
As the old saying goes, the 16 carries like a 20, but kills like a 12.
There are no 16-gauge competitions in major clay-shooting events.

ive nothing against the 16 gauge , but imo 12 gauge all the way simply because its easier to get a variety of ammo for it if you wanted to smack a few clays
