'The Thick of It' to return this Autumn

Malcolm Tucker is back, and about f***ing time too. After a hiatus of three years, The Thick of It returns for a new seven part series on BBC2 this Autumn.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2012/jul/12/the-thick-of-it-leveson?newsfeed=true
An out-of-government Malcolm Tucker and the hapless Nicola Murray MP are set to return to BBC2 for a fourth series – the first since 2009 – with the corporation confirming it will be a case of art imitating life to reflect real-life changes in Westminster in the interim.

"This series takes The Thick of It into exciting and uncharted territory: a new coalition government, and Malcolm and Nicola fretting in the wings," said Iannucci, who dropped his second hint in as many months that the characters will have to contend with a public inquiry.

Brilliant! Fingers crossed this will be on form. Veep was a major disappointment. Nicola Murray is such an idiot though that you'd have to guess it's going to be good!

Great news! This show is absolutely fantastic; chock-full of razor-sharp wit.

Yay yay yay yay!! Absolutely love The Thick of It :)

So it's based around Nicola et al in the opposition then? I'd heard mentions that it was going to be more about the former opposition (Peter Mannion and all them). As long as there's loads of Malcolm I don't mind!

The thing with Veep was that it was always going to be a little bit disappointing as soon as it was described as an American version of The Thick of It. It has its funny moments but it just isn't quite the same. I'm still going to watch the rest of the series.

Really glad to hear The Thick of It is back though, its been too long.

I only found out about it when I heard of the impending arrival of Veep on Sky Atlantic so I watched each episode of The Thick of It, well you can guess what Im going to say next. Easily one of the funniest shows I've ever watched, far too many gut wrenching laughs and quotable lines to even mention. Cant wait for the new series.

Though I think the criticism of Veep is a bit harsh. I actually really enjoyed the third episode (the latest shown on Sky Atlantic), I think it will grow as the show progresses, afterall the US Office had a fairly average first season and then the second and third seasons were pure gold.

I don't want to burst your bubble but I thought the third episode was quite good too and started to become hopeful that the show was going somewhere. However, they never rise above the 'insulted group of the week' storyline. At least with ITTOI there was an overall arc and you were at least running closer and closer to an inevitable resignation so it's fun seeing the dominoes falling into place but the format for Veep remains Veep makes dumb statement at start of episode, minority group become annoyed over said comment. Hilarity ensures (or doesn't). I think we all hoped for a strong finish for this show but I can certainly say for myself that I was left disappointed and unsatisfied.

Government embarrassment, ministerial cock-up, Coalition rows, backroom deals, policy U-turns, spin-doctoring, political back-stabbing, wild media speculation, and more time spent with one's family - it can only be the eagerly anticipated return of Armando Iannucci's award-winning political comedy series.
The Thick of It returns to BBC2 on Sat 8th September at 9.45pm

That is a very poor timeslot. BBC2 should have it on midweek at 10pm. I am sure it has a loyal following, but there won't be many new viewers stumbling on the show at that time. Omnishambles.

Yes its a terrible slot, neither here nor there but its on tonight!

    BBC2 9:45pm-10:15pm

    The Thick of It
    Series 4 Episode 1 of 7

    New series.
Armando Iannucci's political satire returns with long-suffering MP Peter Mannion taking charge at the Department of Social Affairs and Citizenship as part of a coalition government. However, he must also work with junior minister Fergus Williams - an arrangement neither man is enjoying. As the series begins, Fergus excitedly prepares to launch his new digital education initiative - until Downing Street spin doctor Stewart Pearson announces technophobe Peter is going to be the spokesman for it instead. Elsewhere in the department, civil servant Terri Coverley tries to ensure she is put up for redundancy, while her colleague Glenn Cullen attempts to make his presence felt
    . :p

Starring Roger Allam, Geoffrey Streatfeild, Vincent Franklin and Joanna Scanlan

Some great lines. The Steve Hilton guy is hilarious, glad to see him back. Just a shame Julius was cut for this series.

Can't wait for Tucker next week.

If you have Sky, it's being repeated on the BBC HD channel (channel 143) in a couple of minutes.

Decent start to the series. Some excellent lines raised a smile but, one moment near the end aside, there wasn't much else there of note

Watched it last night. It was a good episode. Without Tucker though it reminded me of Twenty Twelve, only a little bit better (not a slight to Twenty Twelve which was a great series I thought). What was a bit annoying was having to listen to Stewart and his BS, knowing that if Malcolm was in the building, Stewart would be cut down to size very quickly. I have to say though that even a middle of the road episode like that is way better than a good episode of Veep. It's hard to believe it's the same people behind both shows!

One thing they still do which is slightly annoying (and a minor thing) but the state cars are Jaguar XJ's but the car they use for the inside shots is clearly not an XJ. It looks like an S-Class, although i couldn't be certain of that.

I enjoyed it, but it wasn't the same without Malcolm. Still very funny though, Peter Mannion and Phil are great characters. The Fergus guy I'm not too sure about yet. Also funny that Glen switched parties; he seemed so devoted before.

Looking forward to next week's one with all the usual suspects back!!

I thought the episode would struggle without Tucker, and to an extent it did. Not really sold on Stewart and Fergus. However Peter Mannion is a brilliant character, had some great lines and really saved this episode. Glen's desperation is enjoyable to watch. Looking forward to Malcolm's return next week.

"What is this - Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, C*nt?"

Haha, god bless Peter Capaldi. Don't think any other actor could pull that character off.

I'm just after finishing the first three seasons, and it's taking me a while to adjust to the new haircuts and slightly 'brighter' cinematography :pac:

Nicola's waffling when it emerged the Government had made a u-turn on the children's breakfast policy was brilliantly cringy.

The bit preceding and proceeding it with the 'triangle signal' was even better!

Malcom describing star wars was brilliant.
"The one about the fu*king space hairdresser and the cowboy. He's got a tinfoil pal and a pedal bin. His father's a robot and he's fu*king fu*ked his sister. Lego. They're all made of fu*king lego."

Will last night's episode be repeated anywhere some time soon?

Is this series going to have each episode alternate back and forth between the Government (i.e. Mannion etc) and the opposition (Malcolm etc)?

    Pretty Much
According to Iannucci, the plan for this seven-episode series goes: Coalition, Opposition, Coalition, Opposition, Everyone, Everyone, Everyone.
