My3 PrePay for Android

    Something I threw together over the last few days. Not on the market yet as its probably unstable. GUI leaves a lot to be desired for. So for now a dropbox link, will upload it to the market in time.

    Displays your My3 usage in an app. When you open app at first, you can enter your mobile number + password in settings for my3.three.ie. If you don't have an account, click refresh once, and an about dialog will show you last 6 digits of your SIM ICCID. This is needed to register with My3. This will save you having to rip out your battery to look at your SIM card!! (Why do 3 need this!)

    Please note, https://my3.three.ie is AWFUL slow. I have included options to increase timeouts in settings if you are having problems.

    Was wondering how I could do this. On my old phone bought from 3 there was a simple link. On this new one its a vodafone branded one so its not there.

    I think the site is slower than the last one (my3.three.ie) !

    The back bones of the site are almost identical. Seems they just updated the web front end a bit. Changed theme of it to fit in with other areas of their websites.

    I promise I will get around to making the GUI looking more modern in the app, and possibly add widget and interaction with Calendar to set reminders on internet expiration so your credit doesn't get destroyed.

    As accessing my3account.three.ie over GPRS coverage is painfully slow (The website itself is already slow, but GPRS coverage, at least for me is almost non functional), I'm planning to put a man in the middle relay/parser on my VPS as an alternative option for retrieving your account info. That way the VPS will do all the work for you. DO people feel comfortable with this ?
    Direct access (the way it currently works) will still be available.

    Looks great, Damo. Funnily enough, only yesterday I got me a Three SIM, so your timing couldn't be better. Using it on a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, without issues.

    Just hope they don't change the page layout anytime soon and break the app.

    Aww sorry I didn't get as far as implementing that yet.

    I need to think about how to go about this. Like what should happen if the user tops up between the last refresh and before the add-on is to expire. Them items are queued, so there is no need for them to get a notification about the upcoming expire-able items. The app isn't aware you topped up/bought an add-on though, unless you refresh again.

    I haven't though about periodic refreshing in the background yet.

    I don't think there's any real need for a notification. The app displays your expiry date.

    Is there any reason why I'd buy an internet add on from three after topping up with 20e credit? They always try to sell a 500mb add on or something for 10e is it? Would a once off buy on this stop 3 from raping my credit after 30 days! :eek:

    Well after 30 days when your all-you-can-eat data expires, and you still have credit, you could buy a 500MB addon for €5.

    My account doesn't get raped when my add on expires. My internet simply stops working. 3 enabled this on older accounts years ago. I had an option to disable out of bundle internet access. New-ish accounts don't have this option... So when your addons run out. €€€ for 3!!

    Great app, thanks so much. A notification to say your data is about to expire would be great for forgetful people like me. I always end up getting screwed when this happens. Either way with this app its much much easier to be on top of your account.

    Just for those that can't wait, set up a reminder every 30 days (or whenever you top up if you don't top up every 30 days) on Google Calendar to email or notify you when it's about to run out.

    Great app by the way, use it all the time!

    Love the app, it's very handy to have so thanks for putting it together.

    Great idea about the internet add-on expiration notification. Not sure if you meant this too but it would be cool if the app would notify you when your €20 credit 30days is up.

    Also could you put a Total underneath the 'Won't expire' amounts I have a few lines of €20's there and just thought it would be nice or if possible just one line with the total amount of credit remaining.

    Can you just take a snapshot of what its currently showing up as for you?

    You can try power button + volume down to take a snapshot if your version of android supports it.

    I top up €20 every 30 days which gives me the data package and covers all the calls and texts I ever use. The extras are not queued, they expire after 30 days but the credit is retained for usage.
    I know I could just continue to buy the 5 euro 500 mb package but to be honest I use up to 1 GB most days so not worth the hassle.

    I try to use the credit for Google Play apps etc but I can't burn it to be honest.

    To be honest I think just the total would be cleaner, instead of filling the screen with lines of €20.00

    I have developed NON PROFIT, NON COMMERCIAL, OPEN SOURCE application that allows My3 3Pay customers check their credit using their android in an efficient convenient manner. This application will never be used for profit or commercial purposes.

    Do I have formal permission to use the "Three" logo in my application? Are Hutchison 3G Ireland Limited OK with this? Do they prefer it is removed?

    It merely is an application to parse and aggregate a user's prepay usage data, and only their data.

    I am currently in the process of removing Three's copyrighted logo's with free non-copyrighted material.

    I'm not really sure what the "unlawful use of intellectual property" is then. Can you please clarify?

    Also what is the violation of terms of use?

    This application accesses the my3account.three.ie URL. How is this different than accessing it via Chrome/Firefox? Do the browsers also fall into the unlawful use then also?

    Also do the webtext applications that use webtext.three.ie also fall into this category? Because as far as I'm aware, they are been allowed to operate without concern.

The ‘Three’ trademark and other related images, logos and names on Three Services are proprietary marks of our group of companies, including My3. We reserve all our rights with regards to the former.

    I have a feeling the legal team doesn't really see the technical point of view I'm coming from.

    The "Three" trademark and other related images, logo's etc.. are been removed. The wording "My3" is been removed. The application has no branding what-so ever that contains 3 copyright material. It is a generic application that happens to access https://my3account.three.ie in the same way other internet applications do.

    If you are saying "Three Services and their content" is copyright e.g. my usage information is copyright of three... this is merely an application that accesses your website. In the same way that Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome does. Are you's restricting how a user accesses your website? What tools/browsers they can use?


    I am taking it that if the application contains absolutely no branding from 3, that the legal team have no grounds for issues with this application, and that is what the issues were in the first place.

    I will post a history of this conversation online for people using this application to be informed as to why its name and logo's are changing.

    Also, I believe 3 should show more friendliness for such apps, since they don't provide a similar app themselves. This app has 1,600 users and growing each day. Users are also requesting new functionality. It seems like the public want this!

    It seems poor communication (between the '3' rep and the legal team) has resulted in a lost of translation scenario!

    You may have better luck communicating with the guys on the Three Board

    From what I can tell, there isn't a problem with your app as long as you remove all of their trademarked logos and names.

    Super attitude from three there, well done guys. You don't provide a fairly essential facility, someone shows some iniative and does it for free in a great way so you threaten them with legal action.

    Don't think they threatened legal action, if damo2k had never asked they probably would never have said anything to him.

    There response was fairly poor though, I agree with you on that. He may be better off talking to someone directly in head office as the reps on the boards here probably aren't the best for this type of thing. It's not really there area.

    I don't see where the illegality would come from in a technical sense. I'd remove all branding references as you have done and leave it up there. If you get sent further legal correspondence after that then I'd re-evaluate.
