Anybody else have a son or daughter flying from Dublin to Spain this August to join the Tall Ships for the race from A Coruna to Dublin?

I have a daughter making the trip. Anybody here know somebody she could swap notes with and maybe hook up with for the outward travel?

I'm sure they will all be fine once they reach their ships but getting there from Dublin would likely be less scary and therefore more fun for 2 or 3 than for one on his/her own.

    Alexander von Humboldt.

Thanks for the pointers Alan - will pass them on.

Did you sail into/out of Waterford last time by any chance? We were there and it was memorable - even for us landlubbers on the shore.

Maybe we'll see you in Dublin next month!

Oh cool, I saw the new Alex down in cobh a few months ago, a georgous looking ship! I didnt, never sailed into waterford, I was down there last year though! I sailed from Gdynia in northern Poland to St Peterburg and then onto Helsinki in Finland aboard the Dutch ship T.S Astrid, she's sailing around Africa this summer so won't be doing the races, she was in Waterford last year though!
Absolutly, not sure what ship I'm assigned to yet, but I'll be there somewhere :D

    That's the one.

We haven't seen it in real life but the photos do look great - a proper sailing ship!

    What's the powerboat branch?
That sounds more more like my kind of thing than floundering about at the mercy of the breeze! :D

32' long, €7,000 and needs an engine?

The Hammond is less than half the price, ready-to-go and way more practical!

    Help me convince myself :)

And trailer not included!! Although I'd say the gurgle off those engines would make you think twice!!

Here is a blog entry I found online of someone one Alexander Von Humboldt 2 for race 1, just to let them know what ship life is going to be like!! I have to say, I'm jealous I wont be there!!
SHIPSLOG ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT RACE :

    9th July

Today we had our first night watch, it was exciting because we had a chance to set sails for the first time. The event of the day was the emergency exercises. We had to run up the deck as if there was a real fire on the board; everyone had to wear their life vests and gather in one place. Members of the crew pretended to search for and kill the fir...e using the professional equipment. The price for our patience during the exercises was an amazing cake!

    8th July

The day started with delicious breakfast. We were introduced to the ship and the crew which proved to be very friendly and chilled out. We left Saint Malo at 1300 with the great weather and thousands of spectators cheering us up, singing and clapping together with Alex’s crew and trainees. After the amazing time in the port, the real live on the ship has begun; we were divided into three watches and started our daily routine. Apart from the deck duties, some of us had to work in the kitchen to help the cooks with the meals and cleaning.

Here's a link to the area on the sea front where the ships will be based.

The A Coruna organisers have allocated the berths so you can see where to go. I will be on the Lord Nelson myself but will be travelling from London. jst.org has useful things in the forum. A friend from A Coruna says the taxi from the airport should only cost €10 or so. The Alexander von Humboldt certainly looks a fine ship.
