Start delayed due to wet outfield, anyone know if there will be any chance of play today?

Important series for us to win to prove we really are the top assosciate, the afghans will be fired up too, even more so than usual since they need the points for the WCQ league, should be good cricket if the weather lets them play any.

It appears that the game will not go ahead today, however there is a reserve day in place for tomorrow.

With the weather supposed to be good wed-fri :)

Going on Thursday, weather permitting. On sports on rte, they think the weather is bad wens and Thursday. So they said the thursday game could be played on friday. If thats the case I will not be able to make the game on friday. So I will have two tickets, if anyone wants them, but as I say, depends on the weather.
    (free of course)

Chance of rain every day this week worried these games mightn't happen which would be bad for world cup qualifying i'm guessing

RTE Weather suggested a nice day in the east tomorrow and Thursday so fingers crossed!

We are going to head down again today - not until this afternoon though. Cant make tomorrow or Friday so hope it goes off today.

I spoke to a couple of the players yesterday at lunchtime and they said there was no way there was going to be play in the afternoon but they didn't call it off until after 3 when it started raining. By that point most of the people at the grounds were players and officials!!

Good morning and welcome to @clontarfcc - it is wet here but there is sun in the sky and the forecast is good

    Cricket Ireland ‏@Irelandcricket
No play here before lunch it looks like as it is still very wet, inspection from the umpires will be at midday & we'll update the latest then

    From Cricinfo:

12.28 local time The umpires have decided to have lunch at 13.00 local time and will further inspect the pitch at 14.00. Pitch looks to be dry. It is the outfield which is the problem, it is sodden.

    Not sounding good at all.

‎1:33 PM The sun continues to shine here at Clontarf and a fairly stiff breeze is ading the drying process out in the middle. Just to remind you that we will have news of the next inspection soon after 2pm, i.e., in aboutthirty minutes or so.12:34 PM That decision was taken after

    Further update from RTE http://www.rte.ie/sport/cricket/2012/0704/327801-still-no-play-in-a-sodden-clontarf/:

After yesterday’s washout, there was further overnight rain and although it’s dry and sunny, the ground remains sodden and after the inspection at 12pm it was decided to take lunch at 1pm and have a further look at 2pm.

The hope is that the sun will dry up the worst parts of the ground, which unfortunately are the bowlers run up.

Fingers crossed as I'm ready to head up if the game is on.

Cricket Ireland just tweeted that match abandoned. Run ups too soft. Disappointing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 302 ✭✭Tiernster7

Really disappointing for those of us who love cricket its going to be very difficult to persuade others to come watch. England vs Australia cancelled also so its not just us. Drawing this game doesn't help us qualify for the world cup!

This ain't going too well for Ireland 33/4 after 12

Batting is a big worry these days. Porterfield, N O Brien and Wilson just not performing like they can.

What happens to the 2nd one day game?. Are they playing tomorrow or does this count for double points?.

What a pity Trent isn't 22. He keeps getting better and better!!

Then again if he was 22 England would nick him!!!

    Ireland 163 (47 ov)
    Afghanistan 104 (33.1 ov)

Ireland won by 59 runs :)

    Cusack 3-17 from 8
    TJ 2-18 from 8

    Stirling 2-6 from 3.1
Dockrell 2-8 from 4, what a bowling effort by the lads and batting from Joyce!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,670 ✭✭✭Rascasse

Entertaining enough game to watch. Poor batting all round save for Joyce.

As a neutral I was hoping for a bit more fight from the Afghan batsmen.

Yes, the Afgans threw in the towel a but early. A very modest score and was going to be tough to defend.

All the bowlers were very disciplined in their overs.

Nice to see Murtagh in Irish colours and I think a special mention should go to Alex Cusack who got a presentation award at the match.

Crucial win with qualification in mind, 1 point from 4 against Afghanistan would have left little room for error. As it is, Scotland, Netherlands and UAE are 6 games that Ireland should have the quality to get the necessary amount of wins from for qualification and to win this tournament.

    P W Pts
    Ireland 8 6 13
    UAE 6 5 10
    Scotland 6 4 8
    Afghanistan 8 3 7
    Netherlands 6 3 6
    Kenya 6 2 4
    Namibia 6 1 2
    Canada 6 1 2

I only got there to catch the end of Ireland's innings and I got sunburned with an overcast sky!

I arrived late, around the 30 over mark in Ireland's innings, but you couldn't have really asked for a better day to watch cricket. Blue skies, boiling sun and a good crowd there.

Also had a nice chat with Niall O'Brien as he was on the boundary. Great day overall!

Well done Ireland, a good bowling display and a very nice innings from Joyce.

At the end of those highlights I thought one of the Irish players while celebrating hugged the umpire. Think he might have been hugging Paul Stirling though :pac:

That Afghan bowler must still be tired with the length of those run-ups!

This series is really a good one but the Ireland have the upper hands in this series.
