There is work on-going at Mt Leinster, moving to the new mast it appears. Maybe that's the problem
    Saorview
    Wednesday.

We've been advised by RTÉNL that works are taking place on Mount Leinster this week and next, on the antennas on the new mast. This will cause some signal interruptions, so if you are receiving your Saorview signal from Mount Leinster, your channels may disappear for short periods of time. This work is for essential upgrades to the service and will improve coverage for a lot of households in the area.
    Saorview Tech & Trade
    June 26.

RTÉNL have informed us of planned works at Mount Leinster next week while the new antenna system is being commissioned. This may cause outages to service on Wednesday and Thursday morning and Friday afternoon. Works are weather dependent. We will post any changes to the plans here.

What about Truskmore in Sligo. I have no Saorview in about 2 weeks. My UHF analogue tv3 and tg4 got worse too. I got new group c/d aerial installed the other day and still no different

Contact RTÉNL, they can be quiet helpful

During the day for the last couple of weeks the signal strenght has been variable creating a jumpy picture, it's fine in the evening.

Would you by any chance be using an indoor aerial? Reception with these can be unpredictable & fall over with only small changes that wouldn't be noticed by a proper setup.

During the last few weeks I had been getting better Welsh reception on the Mt L ch45. I can't say if it was due to weather or engineering work. Since the changes made last Tuesday I have seen a noticable increase in signal strength from Mt. L and lost all sight of the Welsh ch45. Roll-on October;)

Although according to Saorview site it is my recommended transmitter, I am on the western fringes for picking up reception from Mount Leinster (Laois / North Tipp. border.) I have had no noticeable loss to signal or picture at any time of the day?
Maybe the problem is more localised to the transmitter or those accessing from an Easterly direction?

The Mt L clash with Wales would only be a problem along the eastern edge of it's service area. It was off-air for a while last Tuesday morning for some work. As Peter mentions above, anyone with a dodgy or indoor aerial could be just on the limits of reception, so any movement in the room or small change in conditions could make all the difference.

No problems in Co Wexford as far as I know, I was out Installing on Saturday and most of today in differant parts of the county with no problems from Mt Leinster.

Kneemos, it might be time to accept that it's a shortcoming at your own end?

Some receiver signal quality readings can go from 100% to 0% with only small changes in the signal. Unless you have a readout of BER, you can't really be sure what your quality is really like.

Kneemos RTE NL were carrying out work Friday night/ Saturday morning but that was between 12am and 7am. what sort of receiving equipment do you have outdoor or indoor aerial/rabbits ears.

I'll move my ariel around tomorrow, see if Improves.Normally have a 90% signal quality except when thier working on the mast. Thanks for the responses anyway.

Ferguson 120 combo with an outdoor ariel.

Have you line of sight to the transmitter. Is there buildings or trees in your way
is the aerial new or is it up a few years {combined with VHF}.
It could possibly be a tuner fault with this Ariva 120.
As Peter said unless you have a readout of BER, you can't really be sure what your quality is really like.

Don't have a line of sight there's buildings about a hundred feet away,a new uhf ariel, the BER reading is just up and down, mostly zero.

  • Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 3,585 Mod ✭✭✭✭St Senan

Ideally the proper BER readings need to be taken from a Proper Terrestrial Alignment Meter. AS Peter pointed out the Readings on receivers are not Accurate. I have come across similar problems with loss of signal on the Arivas which did turn out to be a tuner fault.

Unplugged the box, seems to be fine, albeit a weakish signal.Presumably the maintainance work on Friday sent it awry.

The maintenance work wouldn't really have sent it Awry. It sounds like you have a either a Box problem (Tuner Fault) water at connection, poor cable termmination, or your Aerial needs re-pointing. Who installed the aerial was it DIY or did you pay an Installer to do it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,592 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

Stuck it up myself.More than coincidence it goes the same time the transmitter is switched off.I'll check the ariel and move it around a bit to see if the signal improves.Must check the connections as well now that you mention it.

No coincidence really, more than likely you only had a borderline signal & any tiny change in coverage was enough to knock it out.

Has there been a reduction in signal in Dublin:confused:. Been away a few weeks and now no Saorview reception. Used to be able to pick it up on a paperclip* for the past 2 years and now not even a flicker of signal strength on a decent UHF aerial on ch 54 / 738MHz or any other.
Analog TV3 seems to be almost gone too.

I find Saorview reception much poorer since they changed the Three Rock mux channel back in July - admittedly with an indoor aerial but it worked fine in the past. Even more temperamental the past few days. Possibly weather-related.

RTÉ 3rock moved a few weeks back to CH30 546Mhz

The information about the frequency change at Three-Rock was never posted on the Saorview website, the only information posted was the about the epg LCN change that occured on the same day (news report since removed).

lawhec first posted the information here on Jun 28th, less than 2 weeks before the frequency change, having seen the information on the coverage checker. Thread here from the following day about a mailshot from Saorview to the trade. Information on the retune appeared on Aertel 169 less than a week before the frequency change.

We were never informed why the the frequency change happened so fast and with so little notice.
