Has anyone else come across this radio station? Said I'd finally start a thread about it as an alternative to the thread on Beat. I came across it in the car one day, very random genres of music on it, no DJ's and *almost* all the songs are genuine classics of their day/genre. First day I listened they played Creedence, KoRn, Elton John and Outkast back to back! Today they played Marilyn Manson, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and then some Country song! Very strange! The reason I'm bringing it up is... today I heard a jingle and it mentioned something about being a Waterford station?!

Can anyone shed any light on this? Well worth a listen if you like your alternative music though.

I've seen some of my friends mention it on Facebook. Seems like it's a Waterford station alright:

Great Rock, Alternative, blues the works. The diffrent presenters really put thier stamp on the program. Kurt Jackson is the founder and presenter, check out the link to listen to the live stream....wwwopentempo.caster.fm

I didn't realise there was presenters, do they speak on air? I've never heard one?! Some great music to be fair to them though.

Yeah, I thought I had long wave on!

Usually good music though, esp on a Sat when every other station has sport!

Cracking station if I do say so myself, great diversity of shows and presenters, Mr Nobody and Luke Creed being two of my favourites....great mix of house, electro and techno.

I have nothing against Russian music - Tchaikovsky was a genius!

Grooving with Bob Marley right now.

So what's the story? Pirate or community licence?

Well after a couple of hours with this I can say I approve, sure its a mixed bag but that's clearly the station policy and as such to be applauded - they could have done the obvious but they seem to be music fans! :)

I like the music, very little waffle which is always good :)

Is that the station with a Waterford Whisper News section?
If it is, it's been on for a good few weeks. Great station!

Prefer Zenith Classic Rock myself but nonetheless, nice to have something different on the airwaves

Has the frequency changed? I've changed car recently and can't seem to tune it in anymore. :o

Its only at weekends I thought.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,326 ✭✭✭Jason Todd

Yeah, but even then I can't seem to tune it in. Very annoying, I liked listening to it on a Saturday afternoon, but in my newer car the dial just skims from Today FM to Newstalk without stopping on 104.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 226 ✭✭Up2NoGood

last weekend was a once off, tune in this Friday at 6.

If anyone here has a DAB radio you should check out all 80s, broadcast in Dublin and Waterford, good stuff so far with not that many tracks on high rotation it seems.

Disable the RDS Traffic announcements Mode on your car radio if that is accidentally on (this could be the issue)
. The button might be marked TP, TA or Traffic depending on the radio, and press it so the corresponding symbol disappears from the display, and try again ???

Or maybe signal is just under the scan threshold and you have to manually tune it in (or drive to where signal is stronger) ? On some radios selecting manual tuning can be difficult. What car radio manufacturer is it?

(basic tuning functions of modern car radios is often bewildering to 'ordinary people', why they are so 'user-unfriendly' is another debate)

Fantastic music this morning - DSoTM in full, Stone Roses, now loads of Talking Heads back to back

In this day and age, once you have unlimited data, the choice on your smartphone is limitless really. There are also thousands of stations available on iTunes.

For me, Zenith is way ahead of Open Tempo. Open Tempo are playing explicit adult versions of tracks during daytime hours. Not good - especially with kids tuning in..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

I'm not sure many children (as opposed to teens) will be listening to OpenFM - not unless they have a particularly well developed sense of taste.

Anyway Zenith play Who Are You complete with "fvck" I imagine.

If you were more concerned with that, then what is going on around us. Well then you don't have much to worry about. I learned my bad language in the schoolyard back in the 80's (like everyone else) and my bad language vocabulary was well developed by 1990. Sure kids watch films these days with bad language. Films back in the 80's were branded as 18 are now at a PG standard. Pirate radio is there for 2 things... Too push the boundaries in broadcasting!.... Promote the underground music and arts scene! I listen to a lot of the local band scene and lyrically they have fury in what these bands are saying. Their backs are to the wall with this recession and a few ****s in their lyrics is grand. There is more important things to be complaining about.

Do ya want to get to a stage where a radio edit has to be got for 1 of the greatest singles of all time?.... Money by Pink Floyd, which in the 2nd verse. "Money........ It's a hit........Don't give me that do goody good b***s**t!" Music in its purest form, has to have expression in it.

In general, Ireland is recognised by many visitors as, unfortunately, having one of the most lax restraints on the use of expletives on air. It is sad, really, that educated people feel the need to "express themselves" thus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,124 ✭✭✭7upfree

Ya should rephrase that. Ireland is regarded by many visitors as a rip off nation. Only 1% of tourists return to this country for a 2nd time.... So i honestly dont think that they are worried about the "lack" of expletives on Irish airwaves.

No more rip-off than, say, Italy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,124 ✭✭✭7upfree

Give me stats and figures please!!!!!!!!

OK Jimmy - many visitors to whom I (and many others) have spoken. As I said, if this is the way educated people need to "express themselves" then God help us all.

you do know that there is a button or dial on radios that allows you to change frequency if you dont enjoy the station you are listening to, yea?

From 10 to 2pm there's a Polish chap and a Polish music being played.
He shall be back 8 - 10pm this evening if they are to come back on the airwaves

    Here's the schedule:

They are really showing WLR for what they really are, old, tired and repetitive.

OT I think have filled a nice little niche in the market that was missing for a while. Good tunes being played now by Jimmy Java playing alot of local bands.

Very emotional tribute paid to Mark Keating (butterfly band amongst others) tonight, all the music for the next hour is dedicated to him.
