My friend is going through a tough break up at the moment. I would like to make her a playlist of nice songs for support and help, that she knows I'm there for her. Does anyone know of such songs?

Ah Lovely. What do you want exactly do you want to go straight to Im over him/her songs or are we going to walk her through the various stages of a break up. We are going to have to break these up into categories of course. Just off the top of my head we could have
songs to Cry by and get it all out with I still love you and remember when we songs included .
    Why Why Why songs.
    F**K You songs.
    Getting over you songs.
Im better off without you songs
    Ive gotten over you songs.
I met you as a friend songs and remember when songs.
(not that I have any personal experience of all this you understand :o)

Lets see here is a classic of course.

I think all of these are dealt with on Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morrisette :D

Going back to ancient times,:D "For no one" The Beatles. Better than "Yesterday" in that category IMH.

This song is so empowering - Pink is just a cracking woman all round, I listened to this song non stop after my break up

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,220 ✭✭✭Ambersky

This song covers a lot of ground. It a why why why song and a please please please stay song with a good resolution. Its especially for anyone who has found themselves begging and in a state youd find difficult to admit to in your normal senses. Well heres Bette letting you know you are not alone and acting it all out onstage.
This is not my favorite recording I prefer the version in The Rose where she seems to let rip even more, but this is a good version never the less.
    Still makes me cry.

Haha some great suggestions in here ladies! :D

Holding out for a Hero - Bonnie Tyler

Here I go Again - Whitesnake

What the Hell or He Wasn't - Avril Lavigne (it encourages you to not give a **** and go have some fun, I saw someone else recommended I Can Do Better which is a great one - Avril is my guilty pleasure and great for the break ups!)

    Thanks for Nothing - Dope

You Give Love a Bad Name - Bon Jovi

Love Stinks - J Geils Band

When the chips are down, I do love my cheesy shizz really! :D

    so no song but i once got a card in urban outfitters for a friend of mine that said on the front;

'better to have loved and lost than live with the psycho the rest of your life!'

it was perfect for my buddy and put a smile on her face:D

    I'll Kill Her By Soko.

Thankfully I've never had cause for this particular song but I love it all the same. It's a bunny boiler anthem but it's kooky enough to be really sweet but angry too. It'll make her laugh!

Depends on the break up...but I always remember playing this after a certain breakup.Great feeling when they come back and you just don't care any more:)

Cheesy song but I'd go with Hold On by Wilson Phillips. It's positive and the lyrics might not all be relevant but the gist of it is that things will be ok and you are in control of your happiness (part of that is confiding in others of course) even though it's hard, but it's ultimately the most beneficial path even if you'd initially feel better just curling up and crying. That's easier but ultimately bad for you if it goes on too long (nothing wrong with a little bit of it of course - it's therapeutic :)).

I personally wouldn't go with angry songs (a break-up isn't always intended to hurt :)) or really sad, heartbreak ones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,016 ✭✭✭lilmissprincess

I listened to an awful lot of stuff when my boyfriend decided a break was a good idea which I still link with our breakup, so in addition to the stuff up there...

If you ever come back - The Script - the day you start going "Ah lad, would ya cop on and get some self respect you deserve better!", you know the healing is in there...
Go Your Own Way, and Dreams - Fleetwood Mac
Faith - George Michael - great for dancing around like a lunatic to, good message in it too, don't go back there, have faith better is around the corner - it always is.
I can't make you love me - the Adele version - if you really need a good cry, this is it...

As an antidote to sentimental sloppy pop, how about some whisky-soaked no regrets music. Tom Waits cures all that ails ya. Embrace the pain, this too will pass.

My personal heartbreak cure song...goes with a large glass of something.
Possibly one of the greatest broken heart songs ever written.

    She sends me blue valentines
    All the way from Philadelphia
    To mark the anniversary
Of someone that I used to be
And it feels just like theres
A warrant out for my arrest
Got me checkin in my rearview mirror
And I`m always on the run
Thats why I changed my name
And I didn`t think you`d ever find me here

    To send me blue valentines
    Like half forgotten dreams
Like a pebble in my shoe
    As I walk these streets
And the ghost of your memory
Is the thistle in the kiss
And the burgler that can break a roses neck
    It`s the tatooed broken promise
That I hide beneath my sleeve
And I see you every time I turn my back

    She sends me blue valentines
Though I try to remain at large
    They`re insisting that our love
    Must have a eulogy
Why do I save all of this madness
    In the nightstand drawer
There to haunt upon my shoulders
    Baby I know
I`d be luckier to walk around everywhere I go
With a blind and broken heart
    That sleeps beneath my lapel

She sends me my blue valentines
To remind me of my cardinal sin
I can never wash the guilt
Or get these bloodstains off my hands
And it takes a lot of whiskey
To take this nightmares go away
And I cut my bleedin heart out every nite
And I die a little more on each St. Valentines day
Remember that I promised I would
    Write you...
    These blue valentines
    blue valentines
    blue valentines

I always play Russian Roulette in my head
It`s seventeen black and twenty-nine red
How far from the gutter; how far from the pew
I`ll always remember to forget about you
I lit a wooden match; I let it all burn down
I`ve broken every rule; I`ve wrecked it all down
There are no words in the wind, the trees are all bare
Life`s mean as a needle; but why should I care?
A good man is hard to find
Only strangers sleep in my bed
    My favorite words are good-bye
And my favorite color is red
I always play Russian Roulette in my head
It`s seventeen black and twenty-nine red
How far from the gutter; how far from the pew
I`ll always remember to forget about you
A good man is hard to find
Only strangers sleep in my bed
    My favorite words are good-bye
And my favorite color is red
A long dead soldier looks out from the frame
No one remembers his war; no one remembers his name
Go out to the meadow; scare off all the crows
It does nothing but rain here, and nothing will grow
A good man is hard to find
Only strangers sleep in my bed
    My favorite words are good-bye
And my favorite color is red

If you find it a bit male - try Camille O'Sullivan's awesome live version

If you like you could always try Brechtian philosopy; and have your friend embrace the fundamental truth of human nature. Bleak but probably might give some perspective.

Misery's the River of the World
Misery's the River of the World
The higher that the monkey can climb
The more he shows his tail
Call no man happy 'til he dies
There's no milk at the bottom of the pail
    God builds a church
    The devil builds a chapel
Like the thistles that are growing
'round the thrunk of a tree
All the good in the world
You can put inside a thimble
And still have room for you and me
If there's one thing you can say
    About Mankind
    There's nothing kind about man
You can drive out nature with a pitch fork
But it always comes roaring back again
Misery's the River of the World
Misery's the River of the World
Misery's the River of the World
    For want of a bird
    The sky was last
    For want of a nail
    A shoe was last
    For want of a life
    The knife was last
    For want of a toy
    A child was last
Misery's the River of the World
Misery's the River of the World
    Everybody Row! Everybody Row!
Misery's the River of the World
Misery's the River of the World
    Everybody Row! Everybody Row!

Best perhaps is the admission that you'll never really get over it and a little piece of you remains theirs, when you are still awake at 4am - play this. certainly nothing like the Whitney Houston track of the same name.

It`s too early for the circus,
It`s too late for the bars,
    everyone`s sleepin` but the paperboys,
and no one in this town is makin` any noise,
but the dogs and the milkmen and me.

The girls around here all look like cadillacs,
no one likes a stranger here,
I`d come home but i`m afraid
that you won`t take me back,
but i`d trade off everything just to have you near.

    I know i`m irresponsible and i don`t behave,
and i ruin everything that i do,
and i`ll probably get arrested when i`m in my grave,
but i`ll be savin` all my love for you.

I paid fifteen dollars for a prostitute,
with too much makeup and a broken shoe,
but her eyes were just a counterfeit,
she tried to gyp me out of it,
but you know that i`m still in love you.

Don`t listen to the rumors that you hear about me,
cause i ain`t as bad as they make me out to be,
well i may lose my mind but baby can`t you see,
that i`ll be savin` all my love for you.

I remember hearing Take That "Like I Never Loved you at all" and thinking......wow......how true.

Might be one for futhur down the line though.

I can't see links etc in work so I am probably repeating others but
    Kelly Clarkson - Gone
    Beautiful South - Little Time
Pink - Rockstar (my breakup anthem a few years back!)
    Beyonce - To the left
Rhianna - Take a Bow (if she got cheated on, which I did so this was also my breakup anthem)
Any song by Adele to sob along to.
David Gray - Say hello, wave goodbye (if her ex was totally unsuitable for her)

Whenever I go through a break-up I listen to Kelly Clarkson nonstop for about 3 weeks. Plenty of variety in her songs for whatever mood you're in.

    Some of my favourites:

One of my favourite break up songs of all time is "Don't Think Twice, Its Alright" by Bob Dylan.

    So long honey, babe
    Where I'm bound, I can't tell
Goodbye's too good a word, babe
So I'll just say fare thee well
I ain't saying you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right.

Wish I could find it for you on youtube, but theres only covers to be found there
