Why do they never show your average for you ? I keep second guessing myself when I add it up, surely they should show it in the results.

I always feel that they should as well, but they tell you your overall grade so... and infairness, its not that hard to calculate it, its just weighted averages.

I didn't get my overall grade posted, that sucks.

It just sucks because I keep second guessing myself and knowing my luck I will end up getting it wrong.

Edit - I missed the grading at the bottom, thanks.

If you failed only one and only by a few percent, is it not then possible to pass by compensation ?

I'd just email your lecturer, explain the situation and ask if you can meet him/her to discuss it. They'll generally go through the exam paper with you and show you where you lost/gained marks. If you're lucky and they are generous you might get an extra mark or two. It's your best chance anyway :)

Is there a meaningful difference between an "F" and an "R"? I know the F means (I think?) that you also failed the continuous assessment but the class was weight 80-20 in favour of the exam so presumably I could just repeat the exam?

    I'm a model student.

e: From searching around a bit apparently if you get an "F" you can still repeat the exam but you may have to repeat the CA too, depending on the module, though some just have the exam as worth 100%. For anyone that's wondering. :)

First class honours, get in

Anyone know when we could expect to get a hard copy of the results? May need it.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Sent in the post, keep it as it costs money to get it off Registry later on. If you have an interview coming up then just take a screenshot of the results page and print it off.

if you got 35 or more you can pass by compensation, you may need to email the head of your school/your lecturer and they will advise.

Does anyone remember when the passlists go up? Is it after the August re-sits?

Next few days they go up. I always look and count to see how many people have failed. The class just gets smaller as each year goes by...

I'm only in first year I never heard of passlists going up?!

Where are they posted and are they posted for all modules?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 77 ✭✭MacConmheadha

Can anyone let us know what this is about?

I failed one exam in the first semester (still has an R beside it) and I comfortably passed the rest of my exams in semesters 1 and 2, but at the end of the page it says: "Overall Result: Fail"

Is that just there because I still have an R beside one exam?

You failed a module so you fail the year (for the moment) your grade will change once you pass the repeat.

They are posted for each class (whatever your degree program is) it gives the order of the class, who got 1.1, 2.1 etc. so it shows who came first, second etc. Its just student numbers so you can see where YOU came.

Oh that's great! I never knew about that.. I really wanted to see how I was placed in my class so they'll be fierce useful! :D

Sound, just missed out on passing it by compensation so it should be grand.

Its clearly stated in many places including an email everybody received today "For those wondering about compensation, if it applies to your course/modules it will already have been applied to the results you get today."

Just overall grades for your class in order from first to last (does not include those who failed).

The link should be on your portal page.

When should the link appear or whereabouts is it now, because it isn't on my portal page at the moment?!

The exam section. I can't remember when it appears.

    Here's the link https://www.dcu.ie/results/passlist.php3.

Oh ryt.. well it doesn't seem to be there now.. I've gone through each tab and it's nowhere to be found! The SU said they'll be available from the portal pages 2mro.. so it won't be too long a wait!

That's one thing I never understood about DCU (I did a post-grad there some years ago) - the lack of confidentiality regarding grades and marks.

At one level they were at pains to be confidential in sending people their results but then you get these 'pass lists' (where grades/results can be inferred at least) and subsequently actual grades were written on the programme on the day of graduation. They might as well call them out with a megaphone!

The passlists are not done by name but student number. I only know one or two of the other students email, I always like to find out where I am in the class. The results are pretty confidential.

That's my point - they're 'pretty' confidential - not confidential full stop as in other colleges. I'd also slow to regard writing the result over someone's name on a graduation programme as 'pretty' confidential. And with the best will in the world someone's curiosity about their ranking in the class is not a reason to compromise confidentiality. There's lots of things we'd like to know but shouldn't be entitled to know. I suppose only when this is challenged under privacy laws will it change.

They might as well be done with name if they're done with student number!! In stuff like the list of final year project assignments, your name will be listed alongside your student number, doesn't take a genius to match it up.

As regards the graduation day thing as far as I know you can request that your result isn't printed in the booklet if you really want - but I guess that would probably just make people assume you didn't do that well.

Maybe you can request this but when I did my Master's there the first I knew that this happened at all was when I picked up the graduation booklet! I saw nothing about it when I was reading through the formalities - booking robes etc. - for graduation, when one might expect to be told about this. I couldn't have requested that my result wasn't printed as I didn't know it would happen.

I thought it was extremely strange that someone's result was available to be seen by people from outside the college attending for graduations from other courses/faculties.

The college would be very adamant, for example, about things like not giving results out over the phone but at other times then they just stop short of putting them in the Northside People!

I actually do not know any college who do it differently. Certainly graduation booklets for the other Irish universities and many IoTs I have seen have all graduands listed by award merit - albeit many alphabetically within grade rank. I also know several UK universities where this is the normal practice. DCU only stopped calling up graduands for conferring in merit order a few years ago. It used to be the highest 1.1 was awarded first and then down the list until pass in alphabetical order. Personally I thought this was better.
The counter argument was this was an elitist practice, but then again I would argue the all Universities are elitist organizations by design and should be!
