Can u use string for geog map reading ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,301 ✭✭✭The One Who Knocks

Now that you mention it, for english poetry,

I know dulce et decorum est really well, I'm also okay midterm break.
However, I think love as a theme may come up,

My question is, should I learn midterm break really well too, or learn "shall I compare thee?" (We covered it briefly in 2nd year)

Imo, go for 'Shall I Compare Thee'. If general question comes up go far Dulce et Decorum but if Love comes up you might be screwed.

In the English exam can you get doct marks like -1 etc, by the way when it says to answer 1 question outta two questions what if I answer both do I get penalised.

Thanks, yeah I think I'll get a general knowledge of 'mid-term break', and learn 'shall I compare thee" with 'dulce et decorum est' in detail, ;)

No, I don't think so, because in other exams when it says answer 16 out of 20 of the following questions , for example, people always advise you to answer as much as possible.

But, would you have time to answer both?

Yah they would correct both and then accept your best answer, but I strongly recommend you to spend the extra time adding to your previous answers. Good Luck! :)

Agreed - definitely better to carefully select your questions and answer them to the best of your ability than to do an extra question and spread yourself too thinly. If you have enough time to spare and you've made your other answers the best they can be, then go for it, but personally I wouldn't recommend it - you shouldn't have that much time left over in any exam for an extra question.

I don't think so - the way we were advised to do it was use a ruler and a page to mark off each bend in a road, and then add up all the marks for the total distance. String was never mentioned, and tbh I think it would make the question too easy... If you get the chance talk to your Geography teacher and ask them to clarify but I don't think you'd be allowed. :pac:

For most of them you're allowed all stationary - pencils, pens, rulers, etc. - you have to write in blue or black ink for every exam except Maths, where you can write in pencil. For Geography, you need to have good colouring pencils - if you don't have a whole set just get a hold of black, green, red, blue and brown. For Maths, Science, Business, any exam where you need to do calculations, you're allowed a scientific calculator, but not a programmable one (in case you sneak in answers or whatnot). You must know the make and model of your calculator and put it down on your answerbook. You're allowed your log tables for Maths, not sure about Science though... I'll get back to you on that
For Tech Graph/Technology you're allowed your drawing equipment - set squares, rulers, the whole shibang, and get this - your friggin' Log Tables!!! These were a godsend to me last year in the Technology exam, because there's nearly always a question on electrical circuits and symbols and what-have-you. Even if you think you don't need them, BRING THEM. You'll thank me later ;)
You're allowed a bottle of water, but no phones, electronic devices other than calculators or notes/papers of any kind. Bring a watch that you can put on your desk to save you looking around for the exam hall clock, and allocate appropriate time to each question, making sure to stick to these times. If you're the religious kind you could bring rosary beads, a memorial card, or small relic in with you - I got away with it last year and it calmed my nerves, especially on the first day.

What do you put down for the details about calculators? i've a Casio calculator. Would the details about the model look like "fx-83GT Plus"?

If memory serves me correctly it either asks for the name in full or seperate boxes for the make and model. Put the whole name down because there are loads of different calculators. That sounds about right :pac:

Do you? We were always told to write in pencil, in case we made mistakes... I personally preferred using a pen - whatever you feel more comfortable with. But in every other exam you must use a blue or black pen - NEVER red or green.
Always draw pictures in pencil though, and if you're doing Business and choose the Balance Sheet or Household Budget questions, do the whole question in pencil and make sure it works out/is correct before going over it in pen. We were always told that marks do go for presentation! :o

Ya, I knew about the blue/black pen and the drawing/accounting in pencil. Just didn't know about Maths. I'll say it to my teacher in September (if I remember).

Oh, did you do your titles in red for you Trading, Profit & Loss accounts for example?

I think I did mine in a greeny blue colour, but I see no reason not to use red, just keep it to a bare minimum.

You are not allowed to bring your own log tables into the exam. The supervisor will give ones out.

Are you allowed to us red pen in, lets say English, to number your questions?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 621 ✭✭✭if832uspx4eogt

Are we not allowed to write on the actual Examination booklet with the questions at all? like the book with all the questions.

Because I was hoping to write all my R+J quotes on the back of it so I wouldn't have to remember them all - is this not allowed?

Also, are we allowed to keep the examination book with the questions after the exam or do we have to give it up?

Your not supposed to. Examiners use red pen. Use either blue or black.

Can someone tell me the amount of time I should spend on each question in English paper 1&2 and which question should I start on cause I ran out of time in the mocks and didn't get to finish and now I'm afraid it'll happen again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,248 ✭✭✭Slow Show

You get log tables for any subject you have need of them for, including Science. You don't have to write in blue and black but it's advised, don't freak out if you read that you're not allowed after English tomorrow, it's grand, no marks will be deducted, red/green pen only makes things harder for the examiner. I didn't know about this rule last year and it didn't matter in the slightest for me. Not advising you to use red here, you really shouldn't. :p

Also you can write in pencil for any exam, that rule isn't exclusive to maths. But don't...for any subject, seriously, pencil fades over time and your scripts will more than likely be in a rather messy state when they reach their destination.

Sorry for picking so many flaws in your post, Schique00 :p The rest of it was excellent, really!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 621 ✭✭✭if832uspx4eogt

For Paper 1, spend 30 minutes on Section 1,3 and 4 and 1 hour on Section 2. For Paper 2, 45 mins per Question.

But that's just a general rule. In English, for example, Personal Writing only takes me 50 minutes but Media Studies takes me about 40 minutes so plan it according to how well you are at the questions but they are the general guidelines.

Don't laugh! Many find it hard to find the length of a curving road. String is actually much quicker.

On a side note, I'm also bringing a pizza cutter and a monacle (like a sir) into geography. (You're allowed an opisometer and a magnifying glass!)

Haha it's fine - better them knowing the right way of things than doing the wrong thing tomorrow - that's what we're all here for! :)

I was just writing based on what I was told by my teachers this time last year - I could never understand why people wrote in pencil for anything, even in class. Pencil is primary school level, IMO.

Damn straight it is - espesh if you're not mathematically inclined - its' one of the main reasons why I didn't do the map-reading question last year...

If you bring in a school bag to carry your books in tomorrow - do you leave it outside the room and just bring in what you need?

And are you allowed a pencil case? I will have lots pens in case they run out, grips and stuff so can I bring them all in a pencil case?

Well in English you can keep the sheet with the questions, and I wrote down mind maps, quotes, etc all over mine at the start, so I would say fire away! As long as you have the quotes memorised and you don't bring them with you on a page or anything, it's grand :o

For any exam, as long as you don't have to fill in answers on the sheet (eg. in Geography where you fill in the short answer questions on the sheet) you get to keep the questions sheet. You have paid for it, after all! :p

YES you have to leave your bag outside :) - you're only allowed to bring in what you need - there will be students sitting outside the exam hall who take your name and phone/any electronic devices you have and you get them back when you finish the exam.
Technically if you're bringing a pencil case it should be clear so the examiner can see what you've brought in it - I got away with my regular pencil case but if in doubt, just carry in your stuff and leave the case outside. :o

I covered this in one of my earlier posts - I don't think it would be allowed as it would make the question too easy, but if you get a chance tomorrow clarify this with your Geog teacher.

I'd say you'd nearly get let in with a normal pencil case. They might ask to see inside. I reckon Tesco does clear pencil cases and they're open 24 hours. Don't worry too much, I reckon you'll be grand!

I know mine wasn't check but if the examiners ask about your pencil case just show it to them and you should be grand. I'd have a Ziploc bag on standby just in case ;)
