Hunt Saboteurs Hit out at Gun Lobby over Donegal Eagle Project

I came across this article http://www.donegaldaily.com/2012/06/05/hunt-saboteurs-hit-out-at-gun-lobby-over-donegal-eagle-project/

this morning and could barely believe what it said. I think people should post comments on the website to make the point how farmers and hunters do more to conserve the Irish Countyrside, wildlife and rural way of life than any "constituency".

It is terrible how the eagles were poisoned however this is more to do with education than anything else. Any hunter I know would certainly not kill one of these beautiful creatures and I like many others hunt in order to feel a greater affinity to nature and not to destroy it. Most of my pleasure comes from being out and about in our hills and mountains.

If there wer more lads out shooting foxes and crows there would be less eagles poisoned I'd say. There would be no need for poison to be laid by sheep farmers if there be plenty of young lads eager to shoot vermin. Saying that one of those Eagles that was poisoned recent had been shot before and one was shot in da six counties by a wildfowler a few years back.

Typical Tierney...Looking for publicity anywhere like a rat searches out and nests in offal.Obviously his "journalistic skills" get him abit more creditability with his fellow hacks and some more coloum space.:p

hold on a minute there is nothing to say it was sheep farmers who were poisoning anything no more than there was to say it was a gun club member worried about pheasants

it could be anyone who had a problem with vermin, from a pet owner to someone with a hidden agenda and to be honest i wouldn't put anything past some of those animal activists

Without proof it could be anyone..farmers, gun clubs with young birds, people with racing pigeons, anyone who the birds could cause problems for.

Most likely the eagles were poisoned by sheep farmers. I knows at least 4 local sheep farmers who poison foxes. Alot of the anti's are mad including the ones in the article but I don't think they would be up to poisoning them eagles.
I never heard of anybody laying poison to protect a pet, sure you would be more likely to poison yer own pet that way. That would be just thick.

This topic comes up regularly enough so allow me to give the same warning i've given before.

Any accusations about/directed towards any group of people supposedly responsible for deliberate poisoning will be removed. You have nothing other than guess work, speculation, and assumptions. None of which are proof, and none of which warrant accusations being leveled towards that group. In case anyone wants to bring up past deeds remember that any past actions by an individual should not tarnish a group as a whole. As shooters we know how we all get branded when one person does something they shouldn't.

So before this thread goes further there is to be no such accusations. Any attempt to do so will be deleted. Repeated attempts will result in infractions.

Anyone with an issue with this decision can contact via PM to discuss.

The usual rubbish from the Antis, indeed I found the whole article repulsive and god knows why anyone would publish such BS:mad: - I know for a fact that those involved in the Eagle projects have warmly welcomed the support they have received from the NARGC and gun clubs in general, especcially their recent offer to farmers to control vermin like crows/foxes safely and legally. As the article below highlights:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2012/0518/1224316283345.html

PS: Since poison meat baits have now been completly banned in all cases, anyone with knowledge of their continuing illegal use should report such activities to the relevant authorities as it is a significant danger to all types of protected wildlife, working dogs, pets etc.

Think you answerd your own question there...The antis need to bemaoan any good that the fieldsports lobby does and put it in a negative light as it doesnt suit their sterotype of us "knuckle dragging killers and blood morons",to use their quaint descriptions of us.Lest any of the GP might start to think differently about us.
Tierney claims to be a journalist and putting yourself down as a PR or spokesman for a group and making sure your name is circulated as the one and only quoteable source in the media world will make sure your BS is printed. Its called lazy journalism.:(

I got a call today bout a Harris hawk spotted near my hunting ground so I went up to see if I can find her as I know who lost it asked some farmers and one said oh try get her back because some sheep farmers will shoot her
No hawk would go near sheep or lambs and if they asked someone they'd realise that most birds of prey will hunt crows and magpies and are great for taking numbers down
I've had farmers ask me bout bringing my hawk down to catch crows and they are always happy when I arrive

It's terrible that them eagles got killed over it

Really gobsmacked that any news media would even publish such prejudiced waffle by such an obviously extremist.

It seems to be a trend in recent years that every time one of these crack-pots breaks wind, it ends up being published by some media outlet. Says alot about the p*ss poor standard of commercial media in this state!!:(

The laughable thing is their crocodile tears for threatened native wildlife in this country - when it is Antis who are primarily responsible for the spread of invasive American mink throughout the country with their raids on fur farms etc.!!

Hunting groups should work to make themselves central to conservation efforts and policy in Ireland.
The NPWS recgonises the need to control some animal populations and in the case of alien species like mink has an obligation to do so.
Hunting groups have the skills needed and on an organised volunteer basis could work with NPWS to achieve goals which funding and man power stop them achieving.

Belching*, not farting, and no, that's methane which contributes to global warming. The ozone hole was caused by CFCs used as propellant gases in spraycans and the like.

That ozone hole is still there, btw; it waxes and wanes with the seasons because it's the sunlight hitting the CFCs that releases the free chlorine that destroys ozone. The CFCs won't break down in the upper atmosphere for another fifty to seventy years; it'll take till about 2080 to get ozone back to the 1950s levels.

I stopped buying my local newspaper because every second week there was a letter from Mr Tierny in it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,134 ✭✭✭✭Grizzly 45

I love Messers Fitzgerald& Tierneys and Mrs Wrighs and Yourells epistels as I find them a gret source of amusement and somtimes better than the comic strips.Although they can be rather monotonous and seasonal.

Early Summer it will bethe bullfighting and bull run in Pamplona next.
    August cub hunting.
Nov when for some reasons the antis think the shooting season starts:rolleyes:.
The odd rant at shooters and mostly fox hunting.
Dec,cold weather shooting rant anx Xmas hunts.
Feb coursing rants and massive demos[ of 50 people if the weather isnt too cold] at Clonmel:rolleyes:
In between all that Mr Tierney ,like an opportunistic vulture will throw in an odd snide letter about animal abusers being linked to mass murders when they were kids,or the dangers of firearms if some tragedy occurs nationally or internationally with firearms.

Must say they are a rather mono minded bunch all the same!:D
