*Mod Note* Guys this thread is fine to stand but please be aware that non-book readers might stumble in here, so with that in mind try not to spoil future events and use tags please, if it's a case where you feel you would like to discuss future events in season 3 and how they might pan out on screen with the knowledge of the books, I think maybe a general season 3 book readers thread might not be a bad idea? I'll edit the title to add more warning maybe too.

    http://ie.ign.com/articles/2012/05/29/game-of-thrones-new-season-3-characters-revealed
With production set to resume this summer, Entertainment Weekly have a list of characters from the books slated to appear in Season 3. Executive Producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have made it clear in the past that due to how jam-packed the novels are, they will not necessarily be doing exact book-by-book adaptations as much as pulling different elements at different times. This includes a couple of characters on the list below, who fans of the books know were introduced in the second novel, “A Clash of Kings,” but didn’t make it into the second season.

Benioff tells EW, “[Jojen and Meera Reed] haven’t been written out. It’s important to point out that that we have the largest cast on television right now. We introduced dozens of new characters in season two. If you hurl 300 characters at an audience, the story collapses under the weight of too many faces, too many names, and too many subplots. We need to be just as mindful of the audience members who have never read the books as we are of the readers; the series will fail if we only appeal to those who already know the characters. So we try to be parsimonious about how many new roles we introduce to the story and when we introduce them.”

While the showrunners stress there will be more beyond this, characters certain to show up in Season 3 include:

Mance Rayder: Former Night’s Watch member turned the Wildling “King Beyond the Wall.

Daario Naharis: Captain of the mercenary group, Stormcrows.

Jojen Reed; Meera Reed: A teenage brother and sister with connections to the Starks.

    Edmure Tully: Catelyn Stark’s brother.

Ser Brynden Tully (The Blackfish): Catelyn Stark’s uncle.

    Selyse Baratheon: Stannis Baratheon’s wife.

    Shireen Baratheon: Stannis’ daughter.

Olenna Redwyne (The Queen of Thorns): Margaery Tyrell’s grandmother.

Beric Dondarrion: Leader of the guerrilla group Brotherhood Without Banners. [It's been pointed out in the comments that we actually did see Beric once in Season 1, played by David Michael Scott. It's not clear yet if Scott will reprise the role in Season 3 or a different actor will play the character.]

Thoros of Myr: A red priest.

    Tormund Giantsbane: A Wildling raider.

People who haven't read the books will literally pee themselves if season 3 is half as good as the book, the words "you ain't seen nothing yet" jump to mind :D

There is just so much to get through but I can think of changes and parts to streamline for sure but if it's split in 2 it will be 2 years from now by the time we see the parts I want to see on screen, :(

I'd love to see them to do it in one 20 episode run or with a shorter break between airings but I can't see it happening :(

No Ramsay on this list makes me think that he might make his appearance in the season finale but with zero casting news on him I doubt he will appear. Cant wait to see Beric Dondarrion.

    Tormund Giantsbane to be cast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank fup for that, my favorite wilding.

He appeared (briefly) in Season 1, is he being recast or is it the same guy?

When did he show up in season 1?

Upon hearing of the atrocities committed by Ser Gregor Clegane, Lord Eddard Stark, acting as the Hand of the King, orders Lord Beric to take a hundred men, ride to Ser Gregor's keep and execute him for treason and murder. Beric willingly agrees to the task

    http://gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/Beric_Dondarrion

Unless you are referring to Ramsay, who was not in season 1, but may make an appearance in the next episode hopefully.

Yaaaaaaay the frogeaters arer going north

I hope they cast someone Hawt as Meeera.
I'm still expecting The Bastard Lord Snow Bolton to ride in and clobber Theon in the finale of Season 2.

Otherwise how will the writers resolve that rather critical element of the story?

I'm trying to remember which book did the action in Dorne start?

And Dario, well the Ladies will need some more eyecandy and he is a rather cool character

Dorne wasn't until book 4. I presume Ramsay will be in, it does say if your character doesn't appear here, that doesn't mean he has be cut

But some Martells turn up in the 2nd half of Book 3.

Tzar Chasm, maybe spoiler tag your first and third lines? Character names are one thing, details of how they influence current story lines is another, imho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,069 ✭✭✭Tzar Chasm

    Spoilers added

so Dorne will be Season 4 then, I wonder where they will film that?
My guess is that being as HBO are American the handiest option would be Mexico but what sort of accent and styling cues, the way Sunspear is described I picture a very Mediterainian type herritage

Aye,Oberyn does, but the Dorne plotline with Arianne, Arys, Myrcella, Darkstar, Areo Hotah doesn't kick off until book 4. Looking forward to seeing Hotah and Darkstar

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,363 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

Since filming is based in Europe, I'd imagine Dorne would be filmed in Spain, Turkey or Morocco.

Or another part of Malta, given the Dany stuff gets filmed there

That's a plot line I can see getting trimmed tbh.

Having been there, I think the
moorish influence on Malta's architecture it should work perfectly for Dorne.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,069 ✭✭✭Tzar Chasm

Well Malta would make sense if they are already filming Dany's scenes there.

Another thing I've seen on winteriscoming is that Vago Hoth may have been cast but without a lisp, this is a change thats not driven by budget and would annoy me cos I really want to hear him shout Thaaaaphirrrrres, and te lisp gives the character a certain sleazeynes

    fitz wrote: »

Don't know about that, considering Dance with Dragons and Winds of Winter spoilers ahead
Dorne becomes really relevant when Aegon and Connigton land, and apparently they take Storms End, and Arianne is sent to them, so we'll need an introduction to her. Along with Quentyn going to Danarys which has to be shown, Dorne become really important later. Considering, it's Myrcella, Oberyn has to be introduced and sending Cleganes head back, I can't see Dorne being cut. I imagine the Arianne - Arys stuff gets cut, but they have to show Arianne running off and trying to place Myrcella on the thrown, along with introducting Doran etc

Also, considering season 3 seems to be split into two seasons, or at least over a season and merging with the start of the 4th and 5th books, I can see them taking about 4-5 seasons to cover the next 3 books and the start of the Winds of Winter. Should be plenty of time to cover everything considering the amount of travelling details in the 4th and 5th books

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,126 ✭✭✭✭calex71

To be fair there is a lot of fat to trim from
Book 4, out of all of the books, here is the place to take the butchers clever to, and shorten it into a 2 or 3 episodes

And I really hope they do exactly that :D

Aye, it's a load of nothing happening for ages, which is why I can't see Dorne being cut too much, and book 4 and 5 will probably work together over a season to half to two seasons I'd say

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,363 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

    I'm guessing we'll see
a lot of Dany's story condensed along with a good chunk of the Iron Isles stuff and Brienne's chapters will no doubt be cut to ribbons

  • Subscribers Posts: 32,858 ✭✭✭✭5starpool

Ya, book 4 and 5 could nearly be condensed into 1 season or else it will be too boring for the tv audience I reckon. It probably won't be condensed though.

anyone want to start a bit of random speculation on the casting side of things

I's like to see the bloke who played desmond in Lost as the Red viper

any suggestions for Mance Rayder or the Reeds

what role could John Simm be good in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 614 ✭✭✭beardedmaster

Maggie Smith - Olenna, Queen of Thorns.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,027 ✭✭✭✭titan18

Oberyn - if in season 3, I think Cliff Simon(Stargate SG-1) looks like what I imagined Oberyn as. Other than that Oded Fehr.

Ben Kingsley as Doran (doubt it'd happen, but it would be a good choice)

Again wont happen but Jeremy Irons is how I always saw The Blackfish.

    James Purefoy as Mance perhaps.

Apparently, this guy has auditioned, not sure what role, but it has to be Tormund

2 excellent suggestions for the Viper

I had mance as older in my head

but that has to be Giantsbane

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,363 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

Tidy him up just a little and he could make an excellent Blackfish either - all the auburn haired Tully's and Brynden is definitely something of a wild card...

Would love to see Maggie Smyth or Dame Judi as Olenna.

Doran's a relatively hard one to cast.

TBH, casting is something I've had very little complaint about in the show so far, Cersei's the only role I'm unconvinced about the casting of... strange to say it bu Lena Headey just isn't beautiful enough to be Cersei.

Ok that would fella is definitely how I pictured Tormund, except not with red hair :pac:, but dye that black or grey, what ever Tormunds is, and he'd definitely look the part.

Better start practicing his "Har's!" in the mirror.

Well I think she is doing a great job as Cersei. As for not beautiful enough, you got real high standards ser!

Only messing, I see where you are coming from, google Lena Headey and she looks class dressed normally, but dress her up as Cersei, its hard to see how good looking she is, maybe because its hard to see past how big of a b***h Cersei is though, all we can see if the ugliness of her character.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,363 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

It's more a case of the character: While Lena Headey is a very good-looking woman (she was stunning in 300), Cersei Lannister is regarded as far and away the most beautiful noblewoman in Westeros (her ageing beauty contrasted with Sansa and Maergary blossoming youth is something of a theme for her character) and I just don't see Lena Headey as the most beautiful woman on the show.

She's playing the character well and she's a beautiful woman but she's just not the most gorgeous woman for miles around we read about in the books.

It's nit-picky as hell I know, just something that slightly irks me...

Not "runty" enough for my liking. I always pictured him as more of a Steven Mackintosh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,069 ✭✭✭Tzar Chasm

Ah but Cersi Was the most beautiful woman in westeros, many years ago, age and childbirth have taken their toll consider the last few chapters of AdWD

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,363 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

I am. She doesn't look like a slightly aged beauty... my impression of Cersei in the books is
of a woman in her late twenties / early thirties who, while dressed, would still be more beautiful than the younger girls and it's only when she's stripped and paraded through the streets that the scars of childbirth are visible that her age/motherhood shows.

I'm thinking a Scarlett Johansen / Charlize Theron who's had children but stayed in decent shape bar a few stretch marks etc.

He'd be an excellent Mance but he's already a series regular on another TV show, so not too sure how scheduling will work for him on that regard

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,711 ✭✭✭Hrududu

For some reason I always pictured someone like Gerard Butler as Mance.

Definitely love the idea of Maggie Smith as the Queen of Thorns, she could totally stay in her Downton Abbey b!tch mode for it.

    Other people I'd cast:
    Mace Tyrell: Brendan Gleeson
    Red Viper: James Purefoy

I'm a bit annoyed that there's no word of Ramsay Bolton. I guess he's not in books 3 or 4 but they are hardly going to
keep Theon offscreen for the next few seasons are they?

    Me neither.
I can see him as the Red Viper, but not Mance.
Someone else suggested Robert Carlyle as Mance and I'd have to agree.
He's smaller than Mance is described, but I reckon he could do a great job.
    Either him or Dominic West.

I pictures Oberyn 'The Red Viper' as a slighlty younger Antonia Banderas.

After reading a stormm of swords the third/fourth season will be amazing no doubt.

A third through a feast for crows and it's a tad boring. I dont know how the show will introduce new characters and then turn it into something similair to 'Tonight with Vincent Brown' though some of the Arianne Martell scenes will be interesting hopefully without the Dornish history lessons.

Ive been reading the books very fast so storm of swords a bit of a blur. Is it correct to say not much happened in the first book but then sh*t seriously hits the fan in the second?
reckon they'll end series three with the red wedding or would that be too far into the second book?
