I have just finished a 1 year access course at NUIM, so I feel sort of prepared for some of what is going to be thrown at me. One of the main area's they focused on during that course was study skills, and although it was one horrible class it did teach me alot about how to take and organise lecture notes properly, study for exams, and organise your time, especially if you have a family at home.

Probably the best thing I did, I dont think I would last 2 weeks in a degree course if I hadn't taken it :)

Just to settle some nerves - there are plenty of help resources available to you as a mature student at Trinity.

The Mature Student Office. Clodagh can help with any queries or put you in the right direction. http://www.tcd.ie/maturestudents/

The student learning department regularly holds workshops to do with study skills, exam techniques, essay writing etc. http://www.tcd.ie/Student_Counselling/student-learning/

Student counselling service. It is a free service for TCD students. Hopefully you won't need to but you may recieve 8 counselling sessions. - http://www.tcd.ie/Student_Counselling/

Also, don't be afraid to ask your classmates, lecturers and tutor for help if needed. It may seem like everyone else might know what they're doing but a lot of the time they don't! I've found most lecturers very approachable in Trinity.

    Hi mate

I am not sure if the maths course will be the same as last semester, as the tutor we had retired at the end of the course unfortunately. The basic layout of the course was a cut down version of the higher level LC maths course with a few extras thrown in, the emphasis being on science based maths. If your tutor is anything like the one we had, he or she will be a huge asset to you, and make sure you pass all tests and exams.

The first part of the course, up until xmas was virtually all maths with some PC skills and computer science thrown in, although PC skills was really basic, it was slightly helpful in learning how to lay out a document for college. Comp science was a basic as you could want, very basic programming, and PC architecture. After xmas, these two finished, and exp physics and maths physics took their place. Exp physics is pretty easy, if you have Donnacha Gayer this year, he is really easy going, and all round nice guy. This is also parts of the LC physics course, although if you have no physics background you may struggle with some of the concepts. Maths physics is a pain in the hole, plain and simple lol. The tutor we had tried his best to make it easy for us, but it can be head wrecking at times so be warned.

Hope this wall of text helps my friend and if you would like to know anything else, just ask or shoot me a PM :)

    Cheers

ya maths physics will be a challenge because i didn't do physics in school, you have been a great help, iv been refreshing the memory the past few weeks so its good to know what i should be looking at,
i also have to do an orientation maths test, so they know what level of maths every one has, did you have to do this?

They didn't bother with our group, they decided to go with the higher level for everyone. They may still do that with you guys as well, but as the maths tutor will change for the new semester, I cant say what they will do for definite.

During the first week, you will more than likely get to meet a few of the students from last year. I think almost all of them except me and another girl are going back to NUI, when you do meet them, have a chat with some of them, they are a great bunch, and really friendly.

    Cheers
