Got my offer letter about 3 weeks ago. Got accepted into B.E.S.S. Never thought i'd be a Trinity student. I am really looking forward to it. Have accepted my place through the CAO website.

Is it kinda odd to have gotten a place as a mature student and not gone for an interview first?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 Coffeemug

I dont think it is that unusual tbh mate, I got an offer from UCD as well, and didn't have an interview with them. The only stipulation was that I achieved an overall 65% average in my 1 year cert in science course at NUIM.

Hi. I've also accepted my offer on CAO. Have you received anything from TCD regarding registration yet, or any sign at all that they have noticed you've accpeted your place? The reason I ask is that I've had nothing since I accepted on CAO on Friday, not even an email. I know it's still very early, but do they send any info to the Round A applicants who accept offers early, or wait until all the standard applicants have accpeted their places in August? I was thinking of applying to Trinity Halls early, if possible, as I'm from the UK and as yet have no plan for accommodation in Dublin.

I haven't gotten anything from Trinity. I have a friend who went back as a mature student last year so I can ask him when he heard back from them. I assume it will be sometime in August. I figure that they will send out whatever to everyone at the same time i.e current leaving cert students.

Just out of interest what are people on here planning on studying?

As far as I know mature students get their orientation pack at the same time as school-leavers so that'll be a few days after the CAO Offers come out.

I think TCD place what you write in your application as of high importance so you must have impressed :)

Hi there. Although I'm not a mature student, I did defer my entry last year, and so received an early offer this year. I rang the accommodation office to enquire about registration, and, apparently, the relevant information is sent out on Monday (the 16th of July), once the deadline for accepting Round A offers has been met. Then we can apply for Halls. :)

Ah that's good to hear. Even if I don't hear about halls until the other Leaving Cert offers are confirmed and everyone else applies, I'd feel much better knowng my application is sent and and with them. I'll wait for the relevant info this week. Cheers!

Hi guys I have a question I was hoping someone could help me out with. I was at the mature student info day today and the presenter kept talking about being eligible for free fees. So my question is as follows...

Is the fees 2250 or is that just a student service charge. Are there additional fees to the 2250 if one doesn't qualify for free fees.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,935 ✭✭✭Anita Blow

€2250 is the Student Contribution Charge which everyone pays (Unless you're getting the grant in which case you have your fees paid for)
If it's your first time going to college, all you have to pay is this €2250 and the government will pay for your tuition. If you have already completed a college degree, then you don't qualify for free fees and so you must pay the Student Contribution Charge and the tuition fee which ranges from €3000-€5000 for arts courses, up to €6000/€7000 for Health Science courses.
You can see the tuition fee list here

I have just finished a 1 year access course at NUIM, so I feel sort of prepared for some of what is going to be thrown at me. One of the main area's they focused on during that course was study skills, and although it was one horrible class it did teach me alot about how to take and organise lecture notes properly, study for exams, and organise your time, especially if you have a family at home.

Probably the best thing I did, I dont think I would last 2 weeks in a degree course if I hadn't taken it :)

Just to settle some nerves - there are plenty of help resources available to you as a mature student at Trinity.

The Mature Student Office. Clodagh can help with any queries or put you in the right direction. http://www.tcd.ie/maturestudents/

The student learning department regularly holds workshops to do with study skills, exam techniques, essay writing etc. http://www.tcd.ie/Student_Counselling/student-learning/

Student counselling service. It is a free service for TCD students. Hopefully you won't need to but you may recieve 8 counselling sessions. - http://www.tcd.ie/Student_Counselling/

Also, don't be afraid to ask your classmates, lecturers and tutor for help if needed. It may seem like everyone else might know what they're doing but a lot of the time they don't! I've found most lecturers very approachable in Trinity.

hey coffeemug i am starting this access course in September and was wondering if there is anything you can give me a heads up on, in particular the maths, what is the main focus? many thanks.

    Hi mate

I am not sure if the maths course will be the same as last semester, as the tutor we had retired at the end of the course unfortunately. The basic layout of the course was a cut down version of the higher level LC maths course with a few extras thrown in, the emphasis being on science based maths. If your tutor is anything like the one we had, he or she will be a huge asset to you, and make sure you pass all tests and exams.

The first part of the course, up until xmas was virtually all maths with some PC skills and computer science thrown in, although PC skills was really basic, it was slightly helpful in learning how to lay out a document for college. Comp science was a basic as you could want, very basic programming, and PC architecture. After xmas, these two finished, and exp physics and maths physics took their place. Exp physics is pretty easy, if you have Donnacha Gayer this year, he is really easy going, and all round nice guy. This is also parts of the LC physics course, although if you have no physics background you may struggle with some of the concepts. Maths physics is a pain in the hole, plain and simple lol. The tutor we had tried his best to make it easy for us, but it can be head wrecking at times so be warned.

Hope this wall of text helps my friend and if you would like to know anything else, just ask or shoot me a PM :)

    Cheers
    Matt

ya maths physics will be a challenge because i didn't do physics in school, you have been a great help, iv been refreshing the memory the past few weeks so its good to know what i should be looking at,
i also have to do an orientation maths test, so they know what level of maths every one has, did you have to do this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 Coffeemug

They didn't bother with our group, they decided to go with the higher level for everyone. They may still do that with you guys as well, but as the maths tutor will change for the new semester, I cant say what they will do for definite.

During the first week, you will more than likely get to meet a few of the students from last year. I think almost all of them except me and another girl are going back to NUI, when you do meet them, have a chat with some of them, they are a great bunch, and really friendly.

    Cheers
