A good few places popping up doing this TRX Suspension dealy - seems to be the new fad... what's the opinions of the people in the know? It looks decent and I'm probably going to give it a try in the next couple of weeks...

Have never gone to classes, but I have a TRX that I sometimes use at home attached to an over the door chin up bar or I will bring with me if I am out running in a park and attach it to a goal post.

At home I use it in conjunction with KB's like this (skip to 2:30 to avoid the waffle)

In the park, I will usually do a run, then maybe some circuits with sprints mixed in with some stuff on the TRX and bodyweight stuff.

It's nothing miraculous, but it does add some variety to your training, which I like

Yeah a lot of people in my gym are raving about it to; I'm going to give it a try Tuesday, ill let you know how it goes.

Where could you get one of these TRX straps and how much would you be looking at for it?

    TRX... Fancy gym rings.

They're a tool, and a good one at that. But I woudlnt consider them an effective training system.

Very cheap to make your own. Bit of PVC pipe and some lashing straps. Simples. As already said, it's a good thing to vary workouts but I wouldn't base my whole workout routine on em

As Hanley said they are just gym rings. If you want to save yourself a load of cash just buy them instead.

100% agree. Think doing a whole class just using it is Kind of missing the point. Mix in some kettlebells, foam rolling, mobility work etc and we're back in the room

The trx also has the feet loop things too. I have put my feet in gym rings but they could do with some padding. You could probably make something to go on rings.

I read about the history of gym rings before, I think at some event, like they olympics they had a vote to use either rings or straight TRX type handles and they voted for rings by a large majority.

TRX is overpriced for what it is. If you are not into DIY there are cheaper similar suspension trainers out there. Many TRX systems being sold will be fake too, the high price-tag & low manufacture costs has attracted counterfeiters.

Most gyms won't (shouldn't) allow you to just use your own straps (should they have the required A-bar). TRX can only be performed/trained by a professional with a certificate.

I work in the second largest gym-chain in North America and you can only do/use the TRX A-bar when being training by a Certified TRX Trainer or paid for the group TRX training and have a certified instructor showing/monitoring you.

We do not allow individuals to just come in with their own straps and use the bars.

Clearly, this means TRX make more money. Gyms pay TRX for the privilege of using the name, people pay TRX to be a part of team TR-Xtreme-gains. I'm just saying bollox to the notion that its a necessity to have a certificate/instructor/TRX branded bar to use it as a training tool. You can attach it a tree and train unsupervised all you like :)

While I agree with you 100% all I said the gym shouldn't let individuals bring their own straps because it is a liability and the gym is responsible. Where I work, and at most GoodLife's it's a 'PT-only' area. Depends on the gym of course but contracts and a liability waivers are a big deal for a reason.

Theres a wiki page on these, there are several brands about,

    Still a load of BS.

Just because a major American commercial gym has that policy to prevent ligation and to create a chargeable service. Does not mean it is way it should be. They are doing that to protect and benefit themselves, not for the benefit of the clients.

What do you think would happen without a Certified TRX Trainer involved?
I would imagine the TRX is far safer than the potential stuff you can do with barbells. But nobody cares about that, as barbells are around too long for somebody to market themselves as a Certified Barbell Trainer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,785 ✭✭✭ferike1

Love all these X systems. P90-X, TRX etc. Just rename barbells to BBX and then you can market new BBX and have BBX only certified trainers. :D

Also kettlebells and crossfit would be waaaay more profitable if you called the KBX or CFX! lol

To be fair, X is often used in place of the word cross in america (eg X-ing). So XFit kinda makes sense, I'm pretty sure it's used my some crossfit gyms.

Ha, dopey me didn't think of that, X-Fit. :P

Otherwise, while the TRX I am sure has its uses, I think it is a bit too gimmicky for my liking. Next year it will be something else. Its all about who does the best marketing. That being said, I do not blame any gyms for using them if it is what the people want.

Thanks for all the input, guys... I must admit when I look at what TRX entails, I wonder how you could knock a full workout out of it.. but I think it might be fun to throw an odd class in here and there to mix things up and keep the body guessing... have been trying few different things this year with some success - the main one being, variety being the spice of life, I haven't got too bored or fed up of working out just yet...

Usually after 6-8 week cycle of good-livin' and gym-goin'... I start to lose discipline... but have been fairly disciplined since the start of Feb this time round and I'm sure I owe it to mixing things up a bit - football training, spinning classes, kettlebell classes, different weight programmes rather than just the same one week-in week-out... so far so good, anyway!

Speaking of rings, anyone know of any good gyms in either the Dublin 1 or rough Ashtown/Castleknock/Blanch area with rings?

I suppose I'm basically looking for a north/west side RAW or that place in Ballsbridge with the graffiti wall that I can't remember the name of right now, but I'll be damned if I can find one...

The gyms I've found are either Ben Dunne or hardcore powerlifter/bodybuilder gyms (which is class, I'd just love at least a set of rings as well) :S

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,886 ✭✭✭WHIP IT!

Gave this a go over the weekend and, while it wasn't a bad ol workout - I can assure everyone it's not going to be the absolute saviour of the Fitness world!

I do find any exercise programme done in a Group situation is helpful as people drag each other along etc... but there's nothing here that couldn't be done at home with or without Rings...

I'll go again when I fancy doing something a bit different but anyone who thinks this is the new be-all and end-all of personal fitness is kidding themselves.

Having said that - I'd recommend giving it a go... kinda :D

they aren't "just gym rings"... but that's pretty clear by looking at them / using them

no one qualified to instruct clients with a TRX would suggest they are the only thing you need for fitness training, it is a tool you can use as part of a varied training programme... in fact they actually incorporate Kettle Bells etc into their training programming...

to the OP: they are really handy, ultra portable and versatile i've just packed mine in my suitcase as i head away on cycle training camp, will be using it for some core, strength and flexibility work while away...

Would you not agree that they are very very similar to gym rings. The difference being mainly the straight grip and the feet loops

All the features like fast release clips portability etc can apply to the right gym ring set up. In fact the feet loops can also I suppose.

What was the point then? It sounded like you were inferring there was something special about them compared to "simple rings". I read they voted unanimously to use rings over straight bars for gymnastics events in the early days.

Hey I didnt give you permission for my image to be used on the forum. :)

I have one a bit of TRX training and its pretty hard, very much dependant on form, you can make life really hard or easy depending on your positioning, length of the ropes etc (more so that other exercises). Still it gets the blood flowing and make a change from shifting dumbells.

I went and tried a class out which was good for a change in my routine.I spent a few days after with very sore arms! Here is a link to what the classes are like and what exercises they do.

I wouldn't be paying for a block of classes though I'd rather go buy the strap and do the exercises at home....the only problem is where would be a safe & strong enough place to put it
